(Lock
Haven, Pa.) - Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania track
and field's Brooke Rangi (Kawerau, New Zealand/Kawerau) and Chris
Cowan (Horseheads, N.Y./Thomas A. Edison) were selected by the league
coaches as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Outdoor Track and
Field Female and Male Rookies of the Year. Lock Haven mentor Mark
Elliston was selected as the PSAC Women's Coach of the Year.
Rangi
won conference championships in the heptathlon and the high jump during her
initial campaign. She registered 4,610 points in winning the heptathlon
and cleared 5-3 to take the title in the high jump. She also helped the
Lady Eagles take the team title by finishing third in the 100-meter high
hurdles. In addition, Rangi was named the conference's Female Athlete of
the Year following the indoor track season.
Cowan
posted a second-place finish in the 10,000 at the PSAC Championships. He
posted his best time of the year at the Penn Relays, finishing in 30:05.76, a
mark that ranked ninth in the country entering the NCAA Championships. At
the national meet, Cowan finished 13th in 32:26.38. He matches his
2001 PSAC Cross Country Rookie of the Year award with this honor.
Elliston directed the Lock Haven women to
their first-ever indoor and outdoor conference titles, winning the outdoor championship
by 50 points, the largest margin of victory since 1982. In the process
seven Lady Eagles won individual titles and two relay teams earned gold as
well. Under his direction four Lady Eagles qualified for the national
championships, including Jennifer Farrow (Canton/Athens), who earned
All-America accolades in the 400 meters. This is the first PSAC Women’s
Coach of the Year Award for Outdoor Track & Field for the 13th-year mentor.
Elliston has, however, captured the NCAA Division II East Region Coach of the
Year honors over the past two seasons.
The remaining PSAC Track and Field
awards were handed out to Indiana (Pa.) University's Amber Plowden and Mark
Bridge as the Female and Male Athletes of the Year, respectively, and the Men's
Coach of the Year honor went to Kutztown University's Brian Mondschein.
