LHU Finishes Among Top-25 in Sears Directors' Cup Standings

(Lock Haven, Pa.) -  Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania scored its highest finish ever in the annual Sears Directors' Cup, placing 25th in the 2001-2002 final standings.  The Sears Directors' Cup, a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDC) and USA TODAY, is administered by NACDA and sponsored by Sears, Roebuck and Co.  The trophy is awarded annually to the top athletics program in each NCAA Division (I, II, III) as well as the NAIA, and is based on each school's finish at the national championship in a given number of sports.  For NCAA Division II, it is based on the school's top national finishes in up to 14 sports (seven men's, seven women's).
Returning champion UC-Davis captured its third straight title and fifth trophy overall with a final total of 743 points, and Grand Valley State University was second with 687 points.  UC San Diego (571.5), Truman State University (541.5), and Western State University (535.5) round out the top five institutions.
Lock Haven placed 25th, its highest finish ever in the Sears Directors’ Cup standings, after accumulating a school-record 343.5 points.  The Haven had seven teams make appearances in the NCAA Championships, including four top-ten finishes by the field hockey (third), volleyball (fifth), women’s soccer (fifth), and softball (ninth) teams.  Additionally, LHU squads finished well at the NCAA Division I wrestling championships (19th) and at the men’s and women’s NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships (M: 31st / W: 34th).
