Session IV
Session
Four Notes:
After the completion of the second day at the NCAA
championships, the Lock Haven University wrestling team will return home with
one All-American, junior 141-pounder Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area).
Maney captured a 2-1 victory over Pennsylvania’s Doug McGraw in the
quarterfinals of the wrestlebacks to assure himself All-American status. An
escape in the third period along with the deciding riding time point secured
the top-eight finish. In his
consolation semifinal match-up against Scott Moore of Penn State, he lost a 2-1
decision. Moore posted a reversal in the second period, and Maney picked up a
stalling point in the close of the third to round out scoring.
Maney will wrestle for seventh place tomorrow morning against Iowa
State’s Aaron Holker, the tournament fifth seed.
At 197 pounds, Morgan Horner (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights)
saw his standout freshman season come to an end with a loss in the wrestlebacks
to Justin Ruiz of Nebraska. Horner lost by a takedown in the sudden victory
period, 10-8, to the third-seeded Ruiz. He
went 2-2 in competition at the NCAA tournament, and wraps up his season at
21-11 overall.
Session III
Session
Three Notes:
Bald Eagles Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area) and
Morgan Horner (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights) both suffered
losses in the championship quarterfinals on Friday morning.
Maney matched up against the third seed Dylan Long of Northern Iowa,
losing by a 4-0 decision. The junior 141-pounder surrendered a takedown in the
first period, then gave up an escape and a riding time point in the loss.
Horner will also have to work his way through the wrestlebacks for All-America
honors, losing 14-8 against fourth-seeded Chris Skretkowicz of Hofstra in a
197-pound quarterfinal bout. Horner posted three takedowns and a reversal in
the match but gave up two sets of near fall points and 14 total tallies in the
loss.
Both
grapplers must win their wrestleback match in order to earn All-America honors
and remain alive in the consolation bracket.
Maney will face either Doug McGraw (Penn) or Bob Seidel (Virginia),
while Horner awaits the winner of the bout between third-seeded Justin Ruiz of
Nebraska and Missouri’s Dante Stone.
Session II
Session
Two Notes:
After one full day of action at the 2003 NCAA Division I National
Championships, the Bald Eagles have advanced two of their four qualifiers into
the quarterfinal round. Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area) and Morgan
Horner (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights) each picked up another
win in the championship bracket this evening to place themselves in Friday
morning’s quarterfinal bouts.
Maney handed 11th-seeded Coyte Cooper of Indiana a 2-0 loss
in the second round of the 141-pound bracket, scoring points on an escape in
the second period and riding time. Maney
rode out Cooper the entire third period to assure the victory.
At 197 pounds, Horner earned an escape point with
half a minute left in the match to defeat Anton Talamantes of Ohio State, 6-5,
in second round action. Horner had
jumped out to a 4-2 lead after one period, and despite a late comeback attempt
by Talamantes, held on for the victory.
Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) was on the low end of a
7-5 margin against Kent State’s Nick Nemeth in the first round of the
wrestlebacks, going 0-2 on the tournament.
Gilligan had scored the first takedown of the bout, but Nemeth recovered
quickly to move ahead for good after just one period of action.
Justin Owens (Morrisdale/West Branch) lost, 8-7, in his
wrestleback pigtail match-up against Rene Hernandez of Purdue, exiting the
tournament with a 1-2 record.
Session I
Session One Notes:
The
Bald Eagle wrestling team advances two in the championship bracket following
session one of the 2003 NCAA Division I Wrestling National Championships. Mike
Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area) and Morgan Horner (Hasbrouck Heights,
N.J./Hasbrouck Heights) both scored first-round wins to advance in the
championship bracket.
Maney, seeded sixth at 141 pounds, won a low-scoring fray against Casey
Hunt of Oregon, 2-1, grabbing the victory on the riding time point after
earning 1:05 at the start of the third period.
Maney advances to face 11th-seed Coyte Cooper of Indiana.
Horner wrestled a solid match against North Carolina’s David Dashiell,
winning by a 9-1 major decision. Horner
posted four points each in the second and third periods for the victory.
As luck would have it, Horner will not get a shot at beating his nemesis
in the championship bracket -- Edinboro’s David Shunamon, who beat Horner
three times this season including twice in overtime, lost in the first round to
Ohio State’s Anton Talamantes, 8-6. Instead
of meeting Shunamon in the second round, Horner will match up with Talamantes.
Justin
Owens (Morrisdale/West Branch) posted
a 9-6 win in his 133-pound pigtail bout against Drexel’s Joe Cristaldi, but
lost by fall (2:16) to third-seeded Ryan Lewis of Minnesota in round one. At 165 pounds, Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville)
lost by a 6-2 margin to 12th-seed Kevin Carr of Michigan. Both
wrestlers will be back in action this evening in the wrestlebacks.

Wrestlebacks-Pigtail: Rene
Hernandez (Purdue) dec. Justin Owens, 8-7

Justin Owens exits the double-elimination tournament after suffering a
one-point loss, 8-7, to Purdue’s Rene Hernandez.

3-2, but a Hernandez escape before the close of the first period knotted the
score at 3-3. Hernandez pulled
away in the second and third periods for the slim victory despite a late escape
by Owens that cut the lead to one point.
**Owens completes his season with a 22-15 overall record and a 1-2 mark at the
NCAA Tournament. A senior, Owens posted a 37-22 record over the span of his

First
Round: (6) Mike Maney dec.
Casey Hunt (Oregon), 2-1
Recap – Maney utilized 1:05 of riding time to pocket the extra point
and gather the 2-1 victory. Following
a scoreless first period, Maney escaped from the defensive position in just six
seconds and remained on his feet the rest of the second stanza. Starting the
third period on top, Maney held Hunt down for 1:11 to tally the riding time
point before the Oregon senior posted the escape.

Mike Maney dec. (11) Coyte Cooper (Indiana), 2-0

national title with a 2-0 decision over 11th seeded Coyte Cooper of
Indiana. Action hovered near the
edge of the mat throughout the scoreless first period.
Maney started in the defensive position in the second period, and
escaped just before Cooper could have earned the bonus point with riding time.
Both wrestlers ended the middle stanza on their feet, and Cooper elected
to go for the escape or reversal by giving Maney the offensive position to
start the third period. Maney came
through, however, riding out Cooper for the entire period while also picking up
a riding time tally with 1:03 on the bonus clock.
Maney improves to 29-3 overall, and is now 2-0 at the NCAA tournament.
Quarterfinals:
(3) Dylan Long (Northern Iowa) dec. (6) Mike Maney, 4-0
Recap – Maney suffered his first loss in tournament action this
morning as he was defeated 4-0 by the third-seeded Dylan Long of Northern Iowa.
Long tallied a takedown a minute into the first period and held Maney
down the rest of time remaining. Maney
choose a neutral start in the second period, and could not put any points on
the scoreboard after several tangles near the edge of the mat went
out-of-bounds before the Bald Eagle could get credit for the takedown.
Long started the third period on the defensive and earned the escape
quickly, moving ahead 3-0. Following
the close of the match, Long was awarded riding time to move the final to 4-0.
Maney is now 29-4 on the season and 2-1 in NCAA competition.
He is still one win away from repeating as an All-American.
Wrestlebacks-Fourth Round: (6)
Mike Maney dec. Doug McGraw (Penn), 2-1
Recap – Riding time was again the deciding factor for Mike Maney, who
defeated Doug McGraw of Pennsylvania, 2-1, to move into the wrestleback
quarterfinals and assure himself All-America honors.
A takedown for Maney was signaled but then overruled at the close of the
first period, as the stanza ended deadlocked at 0-0. Maney held McGraw down for
1:30 of the second period before giving up the escape, falling behind 0-1 but
securing enough riding time for the potential extra point. In the third period, Maney escaped quickly to tie up the bout
and save his riding time point, which came into play to give the junior Bald
Eagle the 2-1 victory. Maney is
30-4 overall this season, and improves to 3-1 at the NCAA tournament.
With the win, he is assured All-America status.

a three-point near fall before the close to move out into a sizeable 5-0 lead.
Maney opted for the neutral start in period three, getting a late
takedown with five seconds remaining to bring the final score to 6-2 (including
riding time for Holker). Maney closes out the season with a 30-6 ledger, and
was 3-3 at the NCAA championships.
165
lbs. – Jason Gilligan (Jr., Brookville, Pa./Brookville)
First
Round: (12) Kevin Carr
(Central Michigan) dec. Jason Gilligan, 5-2
Recap – Matching up against 12th seeded Kevin Carr of
Central Michigan, Jason Gilligan was unable to get his offense in gear and only
posted two escapes in a 5-2 loss. Carr was up 4-2 after two periods, and
Gilligan gave up the escape midway through in order to try for the takedown.
Gilligan is now 19-12 overall and 0-1 at the NCAA tournament.
Wrestlebacks-Round
One: Nick
Nemeth (Kent State) dec. Jason Gilligan, 7-5
Recap – Gilligan gave up a late reversal in the third period, falling
to Kent State’s Nick Nemeth 7-5 in the wrestlebacks.

period in the lead, 3-2. A
reversal by Nemeth were the only points recorded in the second period.
Into the third stanza, Gilligan reversed control after starting in the
defensive position to cut the deficit back to one, 5-4.
Nemeth would score his second reversal, however, and despite an escape
by Gilligan the points did not add up and the Bald Eagle closed out on the low
end of the 7-5 margin. Gilligan
finishes the 2003 season with a 19-13 overall record and was 0-2 at the NCAA
tournament.
197
lbs. – (12) Morgan Horner (Fr.-R, Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights)

major dec. David Dashiell (UNC), 9-1
Recap – In a battle between two freshmen, Bald Eagle rookie Morgan
Horner out-matched North Carolina’s frosh David Dashiell for a 9-1 major
decision in the first round. Horner
took Dashiell to the mat after just 21 seconds and maintained control the
remainder of the period. Taking the defensive position to open the second
period, Horner slipped loose from Dashiell’s control and worked himself to
control for the reversal, moving ahead 4-0.
The final stanza opened with a neutral start and Horner took advantage
for his second takedown at 1:40. An
escape for Dashiell under the one-minute mark would be the only points given
up, and the LHU frosh would add another takedown for good measure and the major
decision with 16 seconds left on the clock. Horner collected 5:39 minutes of
riding time on the match. Horner
is now 20-9 overall and 1-0 in the NCAA tournament.
Second
Round: (12)
Morgan Horner dec. Anton Talamantes (Ohio State), 6-5
Recap – Morgan Horner used a late escape to capture the 6-5 win over
Anton Talamantes of Ohio State to advance to the quarterfinals on Friday
morning. Horner scored two takedowns in the first period, including one just 19
seconds into the match, to pull out into the 4-2 lead.
Horner kept control over Talamantes long enough to push his riding time
up over one minute into the second period and closed out the middle period
still in the lead, 4-3. An escape
for Horner opened the third stanza, but Talamantes grabbed hold of Horner’s
leg and dragged him back to the middle of the mat for the takedown with 50
seconds left. Talamantes erased
Horner’s riding time, but the freshman Bald Eagle scored the necessary escape
at the 35-second mark. Horner is
now 21-9 overall and 2-0 in the NCAA tournament.
Quarterfinals:
(4) Chris Skretkowicz (Hofstra) dec. (12) Morgan Horner, 14-8
Recap – Haven freshman Morgan Horner drops down into the wrestlebacks
after surrendering a 14-8 decision to Hofstra’s Chris Skretkowicz in the
championship quarterfinals. Horner
came out firing, recording the quick takedown. Skretkowicz countered, however,
reversing Horner then rocking him backwards for two near fall points before the
end of the first period for the 4-2 lead. Horner selected a neutral start, and
came through with a takedown. Skretkowicz fought back though, and fired off
five straight points to close the period with the 9-4 advantage over Horner.
Into the third stanza, Horner managed a reversal and a takedown but
Skretkowicz added four points of his own to maintain the lead.
Horner had lost to Skretkowicz by technical fall earlier in the season
at the Virginia Duals. Horner is 21-10 on the season and 2-1 in NCAA action.
Should Horner be able to score a win in his next bout in the
wrestlebacks, he is assured a finish no lower than eighth for All-America
honors.

period handed Horner the two-point loss. Horner finishes his freshman season
with a 21-11 record, and was 2-2 in action at the NCAA tournament.
