LHU Baseball's Varga, Woods Earn PSAC Weekly Honors

(Lock Haven, Pa.) -  Ryan Varga (Edgewater Park, N.J./Burlington City) and Ernest Woods (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Thomas Edison) of the Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania baseball team earned Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division Pitcher and Player of the Week honors for games ending May 5.
Ryan Varga, a senior right-handed pitcher, earned Western Division Pitcher of the Week honors after notching a complete-game shutout in a 2-0 win over Slippery Rock University on Saturday.  He scattered five hits and had one walk while striking out nine in the outing.  Varga helped solidify the Bald Eagles’ PSAC tournament berth when he struck out the side in the top of the seventh inning.  The win puts him at 9-4 on the season, tying the Lock Haven single-season record for wins.  Varga currently leads the Bald Eagle pitching staff with a 3.46 earned run average and 69 strikeouts.

Ernest Woods was the Western Division’s Co-Player of the Week after pocketing two of Lock Haven’s four hits – both game winners – in the doubleheader sweep of Slippery Rock University.  The senior designated hitter/catcher tallied an RBI single in the first inning of the 2-0, game one victory.  He then plated the tying and winning runs on a long single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh of the 3-2, game two win. On the season, Woods is LHU’s hitting leader with a .336 batting average including nine doubles, one triple, and four home runs.
The Bald Eagle baseball team (23-18-1, 14-5-1 PSAC West) clinched a spot in the 2002 PSAC Baseball Championships with the sweep over Slippery Rock (2-0, 3-2) on Saturday.  It will mark LHU’s sixth appearance at the conference tournament and the third under 11th-year head coach Paul  “Smokey” Stover.
