(Lock Haven, Pa.) - Lock Haven
University of Pennsylvania finished in sixth-place in the 2003 Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference’s (PSAC) Dixon Trophy standings as announced today.
Lock Haven, the Dixon Trophy award winner the past two years, passes the
trophy to this year’s winner Shippensburg University.
The Dixon Trophy is named after F. Eugene Dixon, Jr., former chairman of
the Board of Governors of the State System of Higher Education. It has been awarded annually since 1995 to the PSAC member
institution that accumulates the most points based on results of conference
playoffs and/or regular-season records. Each
institution’s point total is calculated by adding its top six men’s
finishes and top six women’s finishes in 22 conference sports.
Lock Haven recorded a year-end total of 108 points to place sixth
overall. Shippensburg University
collected 127 points for the win, distancing itself from the rest of the
competition by a record of 7.5 points. Runner-up
Indiana (Pa.) University totaled 119.5 points, while Slippery Rock University
(115.5), Kutztown University (114.5) and Millersville University (114) followed
in third through fifth place.
Lock Haven won two conference titles over the 2002-03 academic year, as
the Bald Eagles and Lady Eagles claimed both PSAC Indoor Track and Field crowns
this past winter. LHU squads
finished as conference championship runners-up in men’s and women’s outdoor
track and field, field hockey and wrestling, and advanced to the PSAC playoffs
in women’s soccer and men’s basketball.
Over the course of the academic year, a total of 103 All-PSAC Awards
were earned by 73 Lock Haven student-athletes, with nine of them earning
additional honors as All-Americans.
Three PSAC Coach of the Year accolades were handed out to Lock Haven
athletics staff, two LHU student-athletes earned recognition as the conference
Rookie of the Year, and two student-athletes were named the PSAC Athlete of the
Year.
The Lock Haven athletics program was the 2000 and 2001 Dixon Trophy
winner. It is the third win for
Shippensburg, which also won the trophy in back-to-back years in 1998 and 1999.
