(Lock
Haven, Pa.) - Chris
Cowan (Horseheads, N.Y./Thomas A. Edison),
a freshman cross country runner for Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania,
closed out his inaugural season with a 46th place finish at the NCAA
Division II National Championships held on Saturday at Slippery Rock
University.
Cowan qualified for the national meet as an individual runner after
finishing third overall at the East Regional Championships.
He covered the 10k course in a time of 33:34.9, placing him 46th
in the field of 179 runners, and third among individuals racing from the East
Region.
“Chris showed a lot of composure leading up to the race, but got a
little excited as the race got underway,” said Lock Haven Head Cross Country
Coach Mark Elliston. “He went out faster than we would have liked, and it
caught up with him in the last few miles.
He was disappointed with just missing All-America honors by four
seconds, but to even make it to this caliber of a meet as a freshman will give
him invaluable experience down the road.”
The Bald Eagle cross country team wrapped up the 2001 season with a
fourth-place finish at the NCAA East Regional Championships.
Cowan merited individual All-Region and All-PSAC honors along with
qualifying for nationals, finishing third at both meets.
