(Lock Haven, Pa.) -  The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania women’s volleyball team makes its exit from the NCAA Division II Elite Eight, falling in four games, 3-1 (26-30, 24-30, 30-28, 30-27), to quarterfinal opponent UC San Diego this afternoon at GVSU Arena on the campus of Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich.  The Lady Eagles close out a successful season with a 28-13 overall mark.  UC San Diego (25-6) will take on Barry University in the semifinal round tomorrow at 5 p.m.
Nervous energy rattled the Lady Eagles in game one of the series as they gave up a seven-point lead to finish on the low end of the 26-30 score.  The Haven came back strong in the second game, grasping a 30-24 victory to even up the match at one game apiece.  Lengthy battles ensued in the third and fourth games, but the Tritons of UC San Diego pulled out the wins by edging Lock Haven 30-28 and 30-27.
Statistically, the Lady Eagles were dangerous from the service line, combining for 12 aces.  Serving aggressively, however, can also have its disadvantages, as they gave up 13 points on errors from behind the line.  Four Lady Eagles recorded double figure attack numbers, paced by 18 kills from Kelli Crouch (Lancaster/Conestoga Valley).  Middle Beth Hackenberg (Maumee, Ohio/Springfield) had 13 kills, two blocks, and three service aces.  Leading the defense was senior Lauren Nuzum (Manchester/Northeastern), who struggled at the net but was key in the back row with a team-best 18 digs along with five service aces.
Kara Warnke (Aurora, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit)   (12 kills, 13 digs) and Amanda Snyder (Portsmouth, Va./Churchland) (11 kills, 13 digs) also contributed big numbers for the Crimson and White.  Senior setter Shana Fessette (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown Central) added 52 assists and 10 digs in the effort.
The Lady Eagle volleyball team closes out its 2001 campaign with a 28-13 overall mark, a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division regular season title, and the Atlantic Region championship.
