(Farmville, Va.) – On day one of the Longwood Spring Softball Classic, the Lady Eagles suffered a 7-3 loss versus the home team Longwood University but bounced back for a no-hit shutout against Virginia State College.
Against Longwood, the Lady Lancers struck first with two runs in the top of the first inning.  Lock Haven answered, however, evening up the score at 2-2.  Designated hitter Kelly Deitrick (Danville/Danville) drew a walk in her at bat with the bases loaded, scoring Courtney Hughes (Schwenksville/Souderton).  In the next at bat, first baseman Danielle Fraser ( West Milford , N.J./West Milford ) singled in Jocelyn Tutrani (Royersford/Spring Ford). Longwood would bounce back with four runs in the top of the second to stretch out a 6-2 lead. The Lady Eagles were able to plate only one more run on a sacrifice fly by Hughes, falling 7-3. Molly Shuey (Tower City/Williams Valley) took the pitching loss, falling to 0-1 on the season.
Freshman pitcher Stephanie Kinch ( Painesville , Ohio / Riverside ) picked up her first collegiate victory in exciting fashion as she earned the no-hit, 8-0 shutout win over Virginia State College.  The Haven outweighed Virginia State on both offense and defense, allowing no runs while piling on eight of its own on a 12-hit appearance.  Centerfielder Lynn Spiezio (Trooper/Methacton) went 5-for-5 at the plate while second baseman Heather Johnson (Williamsport/Williamsport) was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles.
