softball team swept its opening PSAC Western Division
doubleheader, scoring 5-0 and 9-1 victories over
Edinboro
University
(5-11, 0-1 PSAC West) this afternoon on Lawrence Field.
The Lady Eagles improve to 10-9 overall and 2-0 in the
PSAC West.

Calif.
/Ruben S. Ayala) retired
nine batters en route to the one-hit shutout in game one
as the Haven clinched the 5-0 victory.
The Lady Eagle offense was just as productive,
posting nine hits over the stretch. Still scoreless
entering the bottom of the third frame, Lock Haven’s Danielle
Fraser (
West Milford
, N.J./West
Milford
) led off with
a double to right center and was moved to third after a
sacrifice bunt by Megan
LeVan (Washingtonville/Danville). A ground out brought
up two outs, but Ashley
Barber (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) reached
first on an error and Fraser came home for the 1-0 lead.
Still in the same inning, Barber stole second then was
knocked in by a deep single to centerfield by Kelly
Deitrick (Danville/Danville).
Lock
Haven added two more scores in the fifth frame, Jocelyn
Tutrani (Royersford/Spring-Ford) and Courtney
Hughes (Schwenksville/Souderton) both swinging for
base-hit RBIs. Another run in the sixth inning would be
the final tally, as LHU took the 5-0 win.
Guevara
upped her season record to 6-2 and her number of shutouts
this season to four with the win.
Kelly Deitrick went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Danielle
Fraser was 2-for-3 with one run scored.
Edinboro’s
Kim Fleissner
took the loss, falling to 1-6 on the year after going four
innings. The
Fighting Scots’ lone hit came off the bat of Jennifer
Ronald, a single to left field in the first inning.
In
game two, the Lady Eagles got on the scoreboard early,
scoring runs in the first and second innings. The Haven
pounded out five hits in the third frame, scoring on a
two-run single by Danielle Fraser and RBI singles by Jocelyn Tutrani and Megan
LeVan. In
the fourth inning, Courtney
Hughes scored Kelly
Deitrick with her second hit of the game to go ahead,
7-0.
The Fighting Scots posted their only run of the day in the
top of the fifth frame, Amber Goetschius scoring from
second base after two successive errors.
The Haven would add two more off a double by Kelly
Deitrick in the bottom of the inning, closing out the
game on top, 9-1, after the eight-run rule was called into
effect.
Molly Shuey (Tower City/Williams Valley) picked up her second win of
the season (2-4) after fanning eight batters while
allowing three hits. Heather Johnson (Williamsport/Williamsport) went 3-for-3 with an RBI
and a run scored to lead the Haven offense in its 13-hit
performance. Kelly
Deitrick (2-3, 2 RBI), Courtney
Hughes (2-3, 1 RBI), Danielle
Fraser (2-3, 3 RBI) and Jocelyn
Tutrani (2-3, 1 RBI) all added to the offensive
production.
Edinboro’s Kim Kurchev took the loss and falls to
3-4 on the season. Kurchev went four innings with three
strikeouts. Amber Goetschius, Tara Frantz and Holly
Hutchinson all posted hits for the Fighting Scots.
Lock Haven softball, now 10-9 overall and 2-0 in the PSAC
West, will next face
California
(
Pa.
) University. The Lady Eagles are on the road on Fri.,
April 2, for a
3 p.m.
doubleheader before heading back to Lock Haven for a
1 p.m.
