In the first game, a trio of home runs sparked the Haven offense. With an early 1-1 tie and two outs in the third inning, designated player Kelly Deitrick (Danville/Danville) singled to right field to keep the Haven at bat. Up next, Heather Johnson (Williamsport/Williamsport) broke the tie with one swing, hitting a two-run homer over the leftfield fence for the 3-1 lead.
In the fourth inning, the Haven offense kicked into high gear, scoring seven runs to take a 10-1 lead. Courtney Hughes (Schwenksville/Souderton) smacked a lead-off home run to get the inning started. After Vulcan pitcher Maggie Fricko struck out the next batter, Hallowell and Megan LeVan (Washington/Danville) each singled to put runners at first and second. Centerfielder Lynn Speizio (Trooper/Methacton) would load the bases when she reached off an error. Batting next, pinch hitter Kristin Frantz (Boyertown/Boyertown) singled to leftfield to drive in Hallowell from third. Still with the bases loaded, Deitrick hit a deep single, scoring LeVan and Speizio. With runners now at second and third, a sacrifice fly by Heather Johnson (Williamsport/Williamsport) scored Frantz from third. Deitrick now at second base, Danielle Fraser (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) wrapped up the inning with the Haven’s last dinger, this one a two-run shot into left-center.
California fought back, scoring five runs in the next three innings, but it would not be enough as Lock Haven held on for the 10-6 victory. Lock Haven’s Shona Guevara ( Chino Hills , Calif. /Ruben S. Ayala) pitched seven innings and struck out six batters, improving to 7-2 for the season. Kelly Deitrick led the Haven’s offense, going 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.           Lock Haven got on the board early, scoring three runs in the first inning. Lynn Speizio got things rolling with a lead-off single then Ashley Barber reached first on a walk. Both would advance on an infield ground ball by Deitrick. With two runners in scoring position, Heather Johnson singled up the middle to score Speizio. Danielle Fraser then singled down the right field line, an error by the fielder allowing both Barber and Johnson to score.
The Haven would score one run in each of the next three innings to enter the bottom of the fifth with a 6-0 lead. In that frame, Speizio ended the game (run rule) with a two-run triple to left center.
Lock Haven softball, now 12-9 overall and 4-0 in the PSAC West, will next face California ( Pa. ) University. The Lady Eagles are on the road on Sun., April 4, for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
