softball team (13-12, 5-3 PSAC West) split this
afternoon’s double header against Indiana (

Indiana
won the first game 4-1, while the Lady Eagles walked away
with a 3-2 win in the second.
In
game one,
Indiana
got on the board early in the first inning when Melissa
Klingensmith smacked a solo home run over the right
field fence.
Indiana
would add three more in the second, giving
the visitors a 4-0 lead after two. The Lady Eagles would
buckle down, however, and allow only one hit over the
remaining five innings to keep the deficit minimal.
The Lady
Eagles struggled offensively until the final inning, when Kelly Deitrick (Danville/Danville) sent a solo shot over the right
field fence. With one out, Danielle
Fraser (
West Milford
, N.J./West
Milford
) would double
to right center, putting her in scoring position. This
would be as close as the Haven would get, however, popping
out twice to end the game.
Danielle
Fraser and Kristin
Frantz (Boyertown/Boyertown) led the Haven, each with
a 1-for-2 performance at the plate.
In
the second game,
Indiana
again took an early lead, scoring one run in the opening
inning. Becky Lewis led
off with a single down the third base line. With one out, Mandy Klingensmith once again drove in a run off a double to right
center, scoring Lewis.
Indiana
would add another run in the fifth to take a 2-0 lead, but
this time the Haven would answer at the bottom of the
inning. Courtney
Hughes (Schwenksville/Souderton)
led off with a double to right center. Hughes
would advance to third off a hit by Jocelyn
Tutrani (Royersford/Spring-Ford). With runners on the
corners, Ashley
Barber (
Rockville
,
Md.
/Richard
Montgomery) would nail a two-run double to tie the
game at 2-2.
The
score remained tied all the way into the bottom of the
seventh. Courtney
Hughes once again led off and reached first on a walk.
She then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tutrani.
and Barber would ground out to the shortstop, moving Hughes
to third in the process. With two outs, Hughes
would score the winning run off an errant pickoff attempt
by
Indiana
’s catcher.
Six Lady Eagles had
hits in the game, Ashley
Barber had knocking in two runs with her double. Starter
Molly Shuey (Tower City/Williams Valley) improved to 4-4 on the
season with the win, throwing the whole seven innings.
