(California,
Pa.) – The Lock Haven University of
Pennsylvania softball team (26-15, 16-4 PSAC West) was
eliminated from competition at the Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference (PSAC) tournament this afternoon,
dropping games against the Eastern Division’s top-seeded
Shippensburg University (42-4, 21-2 PSAC East), 3-0, and
the East second seed Kutztown University (28-16, 15-9 PSAC
East), 9-6.
Despite
a solid defensive effort, The Haven managed only one hit
offensively as they fell to
Shippensburg
University
, 3-0, in both teams’ opening game of the tournament.
Shippensburg’s first run came in the third
inning, when two consecutive illegal pitch calls moved the
base runner from first to third base.
Jamie Dacey
singled to centerfield on the next at bat, bringing home
the run for the 1-0 Raider lead. Pitcher Shona
Guevara (Chino Hills, Calif./Rueben S. Ayala) gave
up only three hits over the remaining innings, but a
throwing error on what should have been the third out left
two on base. SU’s
Dacey struck
again, hitting a double to left field to score both base
runners and give Shippensburg the final 3-0 victory after
the Haven offense continued to struggle in the bottom of
the inning.
Guevara took the loss, dropping the sophomore
pitcher to 12-6 on the season. She went the full seven
innings, giving up just one earned run with five
strikeouts. The only LHU hit of the game came off the bat
of Lynn Spiezio
(Trooper/Methacton).
Taking on Kutztown next in the elimination game, the Lady
Eagles struggled to find their rhythm both defensively and
at the plate before finally surrendering the 9-6 loss.
The Golden Bears loaded the bases in the top of the
first inning, then Megan Achey sent a ball deep over the
leftfield fence for the grand slam and the 4-0 KU lead.
Lock Haven answered with a run in the bottom
of the frame, Kristin Frantz (Boyertown/Boyertown) cranking out a hit down the
right field line then working her way around the bases
before scoring on a fielder’s choice ball by Courtney
Hughes (Schwenksville/Souderton).
The outlook worsened in the second inning as
Kutztown piled up three more runs, including a lead-off
homer, before the close of the top half.
The Golden Bears added two more in the third frame,
scoring both off a throwing error. Lock Haven began to
assemble a comeback, Hughes sending a long shot out to
left-center field to score one and Danielle
Fraser (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) getting a
base-hit to right field to score two to work to a 9-4
deficit. Continuing to chip away, the Lady Eagles scored a
run in the fourth off a hit by Kelly
Deitrick (Danville/Danville). A solo homer by Hughes
in the bottom of the seventh inning made the score 9-6,
but the damage had already been done and the remaining gap
was too large to close.
The Haven out-hit the Golden Bears by a margin of
11-8 with four players posting multiple hits led by two
hits from Courtney
Hughes, including the home run, and three RBI.
Lynn Spiezio,
Kristin Frantz and Heather
Johnson (Williamsport/Williamsport) each totaled two
hits for the Lady Eagles. Molly
Shuey (Tower City/Williams Valley) took the loss,
giving up the first five runs of the game, to fall to 9-5
on the year.
Lock Haven softball awaits word on the selections for the
NCAA Division II Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament to be
held May 6-8.
