(Shippensburg,
Pa.) – The Lock Haven University
of Pennsylvania softball team (26-16, 16-4 PSAC West) lost
its opening game in the NCAA Division II Mid-Atlantic
Region Softball Championship, outlasted by Bloomsburg
University (26-14-1), 1-0, in a 15-inning pitchers’
duel.
It
took a marathon of 15 full innings to decide a winner as
Lock Haven’s Shona
Guevara (Chino Hills, Calif./Rueben S. Ayala)
matched up against Bloomsburg’s Amanda
Smith for a combined 33 strikeouts. Knotted in a
scoreless tie after 14 frames, Bloomsburg’s Laurel
Koster made it to first with a hit through to right
field then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Koster
advanced to third on a passed ball to creep into scoring
position, then made it home after Samantha
Basalik reached base on an error.
The Lady Eagles were left empty-handed in the
bottom of the inning, surrendering by the 1-0 count.
Guevara falls to 12-7 on the season with the loss.
The sophomore pitcher threw all 15 innings, giving up 10
hits along with 16 strikeouts. The Haven wrangled just six
hits out of the Huskie pitcher, Heather
Johnson (Williamsport/Williamsport) recording a pair
to pace the offense. Bloomsburg pitcher Smith went all 15
innings with 17 strikeouts. Basalik was good for two hits,
as were both Koster and Kelly
Zarski.
The Lady Eagles will face the loser of the Kutztown
University/California University contest tomorrow
morning at
10 a.m.
in an elimination game.
Should Lock Haven win that game, they would play
again at
4 p.m.
that evening.
