softball team (27-16, 16-4 PSAC West) eliminated
California
(Pa.) University (31-11) from action in the NCAA Division II
Mid-Atlantic Region Softball Championships this morning,
shutting out the Vulcans by the 3-0 final.
After throwing 15 innings yesterday, Haven pitcher Shona Guevara (Chino Hills, Calif./Rueben S. Ayala)
returned this morning to shut down the California offense
to help record the win for the Lady Eagles. Guevara
(13-7), who posted three strikeouts in the win, had a
no-hitter going until the seventh inning, when she gave up
the only
California
hit of the game.
The offense matched the defensive performance,
clicking for eight hits on the game.
A two-run single up the middle by Courtney
Hughes (Schwenksville/Souderton) scored both Lynn
Spiezio (Trooper/Methacton) and
Colleen Welsh (Pottsville/Pottsville) to give the
Haven a 2-0 lead after three innings. Heather Johnson (Williamsport/Williamsport) and Kelly
Deitrick (Danville/Danville) strung together
back-to-back doubles in the fifth inning, Deitrick
tallying the RBI hit for the 3-0 Haven lead.
Three Lady Eagles registered multiple hits, with Heather
Johnson, Kelly
Deitrick and Colleen
Welsh each posting two safeties.
California’s Becky Mezyk took
the pitching loss to close out the season at 15-5.
Shortstop Gabrielle
Rendon posted the lone Vulcan hit.
Action resumes for the Lady Eagles at the Robb Sports
Complex later this afternoon. Lock Haven is scheduled to
play the winner of the game between Bloomsburg
University
and Virginia
State
University
at 4 p.m.
