(Shippensburg, Pa.) – The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania softball team (27-16, 16-4 PSAC West) eliminated California (Pa.) University (31-11) from action in the NCAA Division II Mid-Atlantic Region Softball Championships this morning, shutting out the Vulcans by the 3-0 final.
After throwing 15 innings yesterday, Haven pitcher Shona Guevara (Chino Hills, Calif./Rueben S. Ayala) returned this morning to shut down the California offense to help record the win for the Lady Eagles. Guevara (13-7), who posted three strikeouts in the win, had a no-hitter going until the seventh inning, when she gave up the only California hit of the game.
The offense matched the defensive performance, clicking for eight hits on the game.  A two-run single up the middle by Courtney Hughes (Schwenksville/Souderton) scored both Lynn Spiezio (Trooper/Methacton) and Colleen Welsh (Pottsville/Pottsville) to give the Haven a 2-0 lead after three innings. Heather Johnson (Williamsport/Williamsport) and Kelly Deitrick (Danville/Danville) strung together back-to-back doubles in the fifth inning, Deitrick tallying the RBI hit for the 3-0 Haven lead.
Three Lady Eagles registered multiple hits, with Heather Johnson, Kelly Deitrick and Colleen Welsh each posting two safeties.  California
’s Becky Mezyk took the pitching loss to close out the season at 15-5. Shortstop Gabrielle Rendon posted the lone Vulcan hit.
Action resumes for the Lady Eagles at the Robb Sports Complex later this afternoon. Lock Haven is scheduled to play the winner of the game between Bloomsburg University and Virginia State University at 4 p.m.
