WEST CHESTER, Pa. –
The Lock Haven University softball team
(13-5) pinned a pair of shutouts on West Chester
University (8-5) today (March 19), 1-0 and 6-0.
Shona M. Guevara (Chino Hills, Calif./Humboldt State
University),
Jeanette Middlestead (Coatesville, Pa./La Salle
University) and
Stephanie Kinch (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside)
combined to allow no runs on just 10 hits over the two
contests.
The regulation seven innings couldn’t
contain game one, as the Lady Eagles and Golden Rams
headed into extra innings at a 0-0 tie. Junior shortstop
Courtney Hughes
(Schwenksville,Pa./Souderton)
led off the ninth inning with a single, and after a
sacrifice bunt and a groundout, found herself on third
base with two out.
Classmate
Danielle Fraser
(West Milford ,N.J./West Milford)
delivered the clutch hit, a single to center to bring
Hughes home.
WCU
threatened in the bottom half of the ninth, loading the
bases with one out on an error and a pair of singles. The
next batter hit a sharp grounder to Hughes, who promptly
fired home to save the run and get out number two. Guevara
(6-3) fanned the final batter to seal the victory.
Guevara
finished with nine innings, allowing eight hits and
getting seven strikeouts.
The bats caught fire in game two for the
Lady Eagles, as they pumped out six runs on seven hits,
including a four-run third. Junior
Julie Robatille’s
(Mississauga, Ontario/Chipola
J.C.) two-run home run would be
the capper of that breakout inning.
Senior catcher
Janet Paterson
(Frederick, Md./Walkersville) would post the final two
runs on a blast of her own in the fourth. Paterson is now
tied with Hughes for the team lead in home runs with
three.
Middlestead (4-1) was masterful, allowing just one runner
to reach third, oddly enough the first batter of the game
for WCU. She scattered two hits over five innings and
fanned five Golden Rams. Kinch got the final three outs
for LHU before the game was called on darkness.
Guevara, Middlestead, Kinch, Hughes, Fraser, Robatille,
Patterson and the rest of the Lady Eagles are back in
action Tuesday, March 22 at 2 p.m., as they travel to
Kutztown University. |
