KUTZTOWN, Pa. –
Junior pitcher
Jeanette
Middlestead (Coatesville, Pa./La Salle University)
narrowly missed her second no-hitter of this young season,
as the Lock Haven University softball team (15-5) downed
Kutztown University (12-8) 7-3, 6-0 today (March 22).
Middlestead gave up a single with two out in the seventh
inning to snuff the no-hit bid.
In game one, a late rally gave the Lady
Eagles the win, as LHU scored six of their seven runs in
extra innings. In the deciding ninth, Lock Haven posted
five, the big blow coming on a bases-clearing three-RBI
double off the bat of junior first baseman
Danielle Fraser
(West Milford, N.J./West Milford).
Fraser
finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two
RBI.
Reining
PSAC West Pitcher of the Week
Shona M. Guevara
(Chino Hills, Calif./Humboldt State University)
got the win, going all nine innings, striking out seven
and allowing just one earned run. Guevara improves to 8-3
on the year.
In game
two, Middlestead was the story, coming one out away from
her second no-hitter of the season. Just one runner
reached third base, as she struck out five Golden Bear
batters. Middlestead (5-1) now has three shutouts this
season.
PSAC West Player of the Week
Stephanie
Hallowell (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton)
knocked home the first run of the game with her double in
the third. The junior third baseman would later score, as
would junior shortstop
Courtney Hughes
(Schwenksville,Pa./Souderton),
on a single by Fraser.
Hughes
would finish the second game 3-for-3 with two RBI. The
2-3-4 batters (Hallowell, Hughes and Fraser) did all the
damage in this game, driving in all six runs and scoring
three while going a combined 6-for-13.
Middlestead, Fraser, Guevara, Hallowell, Hughes and the
rest of the Lady Eagles are back in action Friday, March
25 at 2 p.m. as they travel to IUP. |
