Softball Rolls to Two More PSAC West Wins, 10-0, 5-1

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Riding a pair of strong pitching performances, the Lock Haven University softball team (19-5, 4-0 PSAC West) remained undefeated in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Division play with a pair of wins over Slippery Rock University (13-9, 1-3 PSAC West) 10-0 and 5-1 today (April 5) at Lawrence Field.

Game one showcased another dominant pitching performance from junior Shona M. Guevara (Chino Hills, Calif./Humboldt State University), going all six innings while scattering six hits and fanning six Rock batters.

The LHU hitters took advantage of seven walks, plating 10 runs on just 10 hits in the contest. Junior shortstop Courtney Hughes (Schwenksville,Pa./Souderton) and senior catcher Janet Paterson (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) continued their battle for the team’s home run lead, each hitting one to remain tied at six on the season.

Paterson’s blow did more damage, as it came in the form of a grand slam that gave the Lady Eagles the 10-0 lead for the mercy-rule win in the sixth.

Guevara improves to 10-3, while Rock starter Courtney Conron drops to 4-5.

Game two was controlled by the right arm of Jeanette Middlestead (Coatesville, Pa./La Salle University). The junior hurler surrendered just four hits and one SRU run while striking out 10. Today marks the second 10-strikeout game of the season for Middlestead.

After SRU got a run to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the third, the Lady Eagles answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half. Sophomore third baseman Stephanie Hallowell (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) walked and eventually scored on an error by the pitcher, and junior first baseman Danielle Fraser (West Milford ,N.J./West Milford) brought home another run with a double to center.

Hallowell drove home another run in the fourth with a single, and junior rightfielder Ashley Barber (Rockford, Md./Richard Montgomery) capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Middlestead improved to 7-1, while Rock starter Brittany Hahn (6-2) suffered the loss.

Guevara, Hughes, Paterson, Middlestead, Hallowell, Fraser, Barber and the rest of the Lady Eagles are back in action Wednesday, April 6 at 2:30 p.m. as they host Edinboro University.
