Lock Haven Allows One Run Over Two-Game Sweep, 6-1, 7-0

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Lock Haven University softball team (28-6, 13-1 PSAC West) shut down the Slippery Rock University (22-14, 6-8 PSAC West) bats today (April 15) allowing just one run over two games to sweep, 6-1 and 7-0. Senior rightfielder Kristin Frantz (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) was 6-for-7 with three RBI, two runs scored and a home run over the two contests.

 

Game one started on the right note, as Frantz—the second batter of the game—blasted a solo home run. Slippery Rock tied the game at one in the bottom of the fifth.

 

The Lady Eagles broke the game wide open in the sixth, plating four runs. Junior shortstop Courtney Hughes (Schwenksville,Pa./Souderton) had the big blow of the inning, a two-RBI double. LHU tacked on their final run in the seventh with an RBI double from Janet Paterson (Frederick, Md./Walkersville).

 

Junior Shona M. Guevara (Chino Hills, Calif./Humboldt State University) threw all seven innings, improving to 15-4 and fanning a season-best 14 batters. The Rock’s Brittany Hahn fell to 12-4 with her seven-inning effort.

 

Game two featured a combined shutout from junior Jeanette Middlestead (Coatesville, Pa./La Salle University) and senior Molly Shuey (Tower City, Pa./Williams Valley). The Lady Eagles again struck in the first inning, as sophomore Stephanie Hallowell (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly.

 

Lock Haven scored two more runs in the second on RBI singles by Julie Robatille (Mississauga, Ontario/Chipola J.C.) and Frantz. Hallowell scored again on a sacrifice fly in the fourth after she had reached on a double.

 

Frantz and Hughes combined for the final three runs in the sixth, first an RBI double by Frantz, followed by a two-run home run to cap the scoring.

 

Middlestead (11-1) picked up the win in her five-inning effort, while Rock starter Kalee LoFaso (1-2) went 5.2 in the loss.

 

Frantz, Hughes, Paterson, Guevara, Middlestead, Shuey, Hallowell, Robatille and the rest of the Lady Eagles are back in action Saturday, April 16 at 1 p.m. as they host California University (Pa.).
