EDINBORO, Pa. –
The No. 15 Lock Haven University softball team (32-6, 17-1
PSAC West) finished the conference season today (April 26)
the same way they started it—with a sweep—this time taking
out Edinboro University (10-18-1, 2-15-1 PSAC West) 5-0,
3-2.
Game one marked the
fifth shutout of the season for junior
Shona M. Guevara
(Chino Hills, Calif./Humboldt State University), a
seven-hit five-strikeout gem.
Junior second baseman
Heather Johnson
(Williamsport , Pa./Williamsport) was 2-for-3 with two
RBI. Joining Johnson as multi-hit performers were senior
Kelly Dietrick
(Danville, Pa./Danville) and junior
Courtney Hughes
(Schwenksville,Pa./Souderton) both with 2-for-4
efforts.
Johnson singled home senior leadoff hitter
Lynn Spiezio
(Trooper, Pa./Methacton) in the first inning for the
1-0 lead. After reaching on a walk, Spiezio stole second
for her 79th career stolen base, just one
behind LHU record-holder Lori DiVecchio (1988-91).
LHU tacked on another in the third when Dietrick singled
one out after a Hughes triple started the inning.
The Lady Eagles scored
two unearned runs in the fifth before getting their final
score on a Johnson double in the sixth.
Guevara (17-3) picked up
her 17th win of the season, while Kim Kerchev
(2-5) threw the complete-game loss.
Game two was a tightly-contested affair, the Haven
prevailing on the bat of
Stephanie
Hallowell (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton). The
sophomore third baseman was 2-for-4 and drove in all three
Lady Eagle runs in the 3-2 win.
The Fighting Scots took
the lead in their first trip to the plate, scoring a run
on an error for an early 1-0 lead. Edinboro doubled their
advantage on another error in the third.
After a pair of singles
and a walk loaded the bases in the fifth, Hallowell
doubled everyone home to give the Lady Eagles the 3-2
advantage.
Junior
Jeanette Middlestead (Coatesville, Pa./La Salle
University) pitched six innings, allowing the two
unearned runs and improving to 13-1, while Guevara got the
final three outs for her first save. Edinboro starter
Vanessa Rose (6-5) went the distance in the loss.
Guevara, Johnson,
Dietrick, Hughes, Spiezio, Hallowell, Middlestead and the
rest of the Lady Eagles are back in action Thursday, April
28 at 2 p.m. in the second round of the Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament, hosted by
Shippensburg University. LHU will face the winner of No.
17 Bloomsburg University and California University (Pa.).
