#15 Softball Wraps Up Regular Season With Sweep, 5-0, 3-2

EDINBORO, Pa. – The No. 15 Lock Haven University softball team (32-6, 17-1 PSAC West) finished the conference season today (April 26) the same way they started it—with a sweep—this time taking out Edinboro University (10-18-1, 2-15-1 PSAC West) 5-0, 3-2.

Game one marked the fifth shutout of the season for junior Shona M. Guevara (Chino Hills, Calif./Humboldt State University), a seven-hit five-strikeout gem.

Junior second baseman Heather Johnson (Williamsport , Pa./Williamsport) was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Joining Johnson as multi-hit performers were senior Kelly Dietrick (Danville, Pa./Danville) and junior Courtney Hughes (Schwenksville,Pa./Souderton) both with 2-for-4 efforts.

Johnson singled home senior leadoff hitter Lynn Spiezio (Trooper, Pa./Methacton) in the first inning for the 1-0 lead. After reaching on a walk, Spiezio stole second for her 79th career stolen base, just one behind LHU record-holder Lori DiVecchio (1988-91). LHU tacked on another in the third when Dietrick singled one out after a Hughes triple started the inning.

The Lady Eagles scored two unearned runs in the fifth before getting their final score on a Johnson double in the sixth.

Guevara (17-3) picked up her 17th win of the season, while Kim Kerchev (2-5) threw the complete-game loss.

Game two was a tightly-contested affair, the Haven prevailing on the bat of Stephanie Hallowell (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton). The sophomore third baseman was 2-for-4 and drove in all three Lady Eagle runs in the 3-2 win.

The Fighting Scots took the lead in their first trip to the plate, scoring a run on an error for an early 1-0 lead. Edinboro doubled their advantage on another error in the third.

After a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases in the fifth, Hallowell doubled everyone home to give the Lady Eagles the 3-2 advantage.

Junior Jeanette Middlestead (Coatesville, Pa./La Salle University) pitched six innings, allowing the two unearned runs and improving to 13-1, while Guevara got the final three outs for her first save. Edinboro starter Vanessa Rose (6-5) went the distance in the loss.

Guevara, Johnson, Dietrick, Hughes, Spiezio, Hallowell, Middlestead and the rest of the Lady Eagles are back in action Thursday, April 28 at 2 p.m. in the second round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament, hosted by Shippensburg University. LHU will face the winner of No. 17 Bloomsburg University and California University (Pa.).
