SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Powered by three RBI from
junior
Courtney Hughes (Schwenksville,Pa./Souderton), the
Lock Haven University softball team (33-6) made quick work
of No. 17 Bloomsburg University (37-7) today (April 28) in
the second round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference (PSAC) Tournament.
The Lady Eagle offense wasted no time getting on track, as
senior centerfielder
Lynn Spiezio
(Trooper, Pa./Methacton) started the game with a
hit-by-pitch, moved to second on a sac bunt, and came home
on Hughes’s two-run blast over the left-field fence. With
that home run, Hughes became the career leader in home
runs at LHU with 14.
The Huskies cut the lead
in half on a home run of their own, off the bat of Amanda
Breon, the first hit surrendered by LHU starter
Shona M. Guevara
(Chino Hills, Calif./Humboldt State University).
Senior catcher
Janet Paterson (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) made
the most of her second trip to the plate, smacking her
team-leading ninth home run to left center, increasing the
lead to 3-1.
After a leadoff single by senior leftfielder
Colleen Welsh
(Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) and a Spiezio walk in the
fifth, Hughes fired a double to left center, plating
Welsh. Junior second baseman
Heather Johnson
(Williamsport , Pa./Williamsport) followed with a
sacrifice fly for the 5-1 lead.
Guevara (18-4) threw all
seven innings, scattering three hits and striking out
three. Bloomsburg starter Jaime Wilson (10-2) took the
loss in a four-inning effort.
Bloomsburg got a 3-1
victory over California University (Pa.) in the 10 a.m.
game to play LHU, and now heads to the loser’s bracket.
Hughes, Spiezio,
Guevara, Paterson, Welsh, Johnson and the rest of the Lady
Eagles draw No. 5 Shippensburg University, 10-2 victors
over IUP today. The battle between the two No. 1 seeds
takes place tomorrow, April 29 at 2 p.m.
