#14 Lock Haven Softball Dropped in Mid-Atlantic Regional, 10-1

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 14 Lock Haven University softball team (33-9), looking forward to a measure of revenge, never got on track today (May 12), dropping an NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional second-round contest to No. 18 Bloomsburg University (42-8) 10-1. Sophomore Amanda Sheets (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) provided the lone highlight for the Lady Eagles.

LHU pitchers gave up a season-high 10 runs in the six-inning contest, including a five-run fourth that put the game out of reach.

The Huskies got eight runs in the first four innings, seven off LHU starter Shona M. Guevara (Chino Hills, Calif./Humboldt State University) and three from Jeanette Middlestead (Coatesville, Pa./La Salle University).

“Our pitchers just didn’t hit their spots today,” LHU head coach Kelley Green said. “They were throwing the ball over the plate, and good teams will take advantage of that. We need to put this one behind us and look to tomorrow.”

First Team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West first baseman Danielle Fraser (West Milford ,N.J./West Milford) collided with a Bloomsburg runner, going down with an injury and forcing Green to bring in Sheets off the bench.

She provided an immediate spark, blasting a pitch over the left-field fence for the team’s first and only run. PSAC West First Team third baseman Stephanie Hallowell (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) reached twice on a pair of singles, but never made it past second base.

Guevara (18-5) went 3.2 innings in the loss, fanning three. Bloomsburg’s Amanda Smith (15-3) allowed just four hits in the complete-game effort.

The win gave BU head coach Jan Hutchinson 1,000 career victories, just the seventh coach to reach that plateau across all divisions. In addition, the win continues Bloomsburg’s success in the post-season over Lock Haven teams. The Huskies have eliminated both softball and lacrosse from the PSAC playoffs this season.

Sheets, Guevara, Middlestead, Green, Fraser, Hallowell, and the rest of the Lady Eagles will prepare to battle PSAC East rival Kutztown University tomorrow (May 13) at 10 a.m.
