SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.
– Playing angry after their biggest loss of the season,
the No. 14 Lock Haven University softball team (34-9),
took out their frustrations on Kutztown University
(27-24), 8-0 in six innings at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic
Regional today (May 13).
Senior
Lynn Spiezio
(Trooper,
Pa./Methacton) had a banner day
for the Lady Eagles, as the leadoff hitter setting the
table and driving them in, as she finished 3-for-4 with 2
runs scored and 3 RBI. Spiezio also stole two bases giving
her 81 in her career, snapping the 14-year-old record at
LHU, held by Lori DiVecchio (1988-91).
Junior
Shona M. Guevara
(Chino Hills,
Calif./Humboldt State
University) got the complete-game shutout, her sixth
of the season, to improve to 19-5. Kutztown’s Cheryl
Griffith (8-5) took the loss in one inning.
The Lady Eagles scored
early and often to invoke the eight-run rule on the Golden
Bears, pounding out 12 hits and eight runs.
“The big difference
today was that we got a full team effort,” LHU assistant
coach Kelly Shannon
said. “We played a complete game today.”
The big inning for LHU
would come in the fourth.
Already up two on a
double by
Courtney Hughes (Schwenksville, Pa./Souderton),
who later scored on an error, Spiezio smacked a
bases-loaded double down the left field line, clearing the
bases. She scored, after the record stolen base, on a
single by sophomore
Stephanie
Hallowell (Eagleville,
Pa./Methacton).
Hughes added to her LHU
career home run record, adding a solo shot for her 15th
round tripper in the fifth.
The Lady Eagles
will face the winner of Elizabeth City State University
and IUP, who play today at noon. The next game for LHU
will start at 4 p.m. today.
