SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.
– One of the top seasons in school history finally came to
an end today (May 13) as the Lock Haven University
softball team (34-10) dropped a 3-1 decision to IUP
(25-16) in the second day of the NCAA Mid-Atlantic
Regional, hosted by Shippensburg University.
IUP jumped out in front
in the first, plating a run on a bases-loaded single. LHU
starter
Jeanette Middlestead (Coatesville, Pa./La Salle
University) got out of that jam virtually unscathed,
allowing just the one run on a bases loaded and one out
situation.
The Lady Eagles tied the game in the third, when senior
centerfielder
Lynn Spiezio (Trooper, Pa./Methacton) got things
rolling with a two-out infield single. After a stolen base
put her on second, National Fastpitch Coaches Association
(NFCA) All-Mid-Atlantic Region First Team third baseman
Stephanie
Hallowell (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) took a pitch
back up the middle for her 31st RBI.
IUP busted back out in
front for good with two runs in the fourth, giving them
the 3-1 advantage. Middlestead (13-4) went 3.1 innings,
allowing all three runs before NFCA all-region first
teamer Shona M.
Guevara (Chino Hills, Calif./Humboldt State
University) no-hit IUP for the rest of the game.
NFCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region second team second baseman
Heather Johnson
(Williamsport , Pa./Williamsport) finished the day
2-for-3, as the team’s lone multi-hit performer.
The game wraps up a
34-10 season, the second-most wins in school history and
the second time the Lady Eagles hit the 30-win plateau.
The team earned six all-region and eight all-conference
selections as well as the conference coach of the year
trophy for head coach Kelley
Green.
