25 April 2003 -- LHU SOFTBALL SPLITS TWINBILL AGAINST EDINBORO

>>Game 1: Edinboro 3, LHU 2 (9 in.)                >>>Game 2: LHU 13, Edinboro 5

(Edinboro, Pa.) – The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania softball team (12-20, 7-11 PSAC West) surrendered a 3-2 extra inning loss before taking a sizeable 14-5 victory in the nightcap on the road against the Fighting Scots of Edinboro University (16-20, 7-11 PSAC West).
The Haven fell in nine innings, 3-2, to the Fighting Scots in game one.  Lock Haven had scored first, getting on the scoreboard following an RBI double by Jocelyn Tutrani (Royersford/Spring-Ford).  Edinboro scored in the fourth and fifth innings to inch out into the lead.  In the top of the sixth, it was Tutrani again with the RBI hit, bringing in Lynn Spiezio (Trooper/Methacton) to tie up the game at 2-2.  The Lady Eagles had runners in scoring position over the next three innings but were unable to bring them back home.  In the bottom of the ninth, LHU gave up a deep single that plated an Edinboro runner from second base, ending the game at 3-2 in favor of the Scots.
Spiezio and Tutrani both registered two hits, each including one double.  Spiezio scored both of LHU’s runs, while Tutrani recorded the RBI for the pair of scores. Kelly Deitrick (Danville/Danville) takes the pitching loss to drop to 4-5 overall, throwing the complete game with five strikeouts.
The Lady Eagles would not leave without a win, however, coming back after trailing in the second game to pound out 15 hits and take the 14-5 win. Edinboro carried its momentum from the first game into the nightcap, scoring three runs in the second inning to jump out into the early lead.  Lock Haven had an answer, however, taking advantage of a series of Fighting Scot errors in the fourth frame to plate three runners before the close of the inning. From that point, LHU reeled off the runs in each of the next three innings, putting up four in the fifth, three in the sixth and another three in the top of the seventh to more than take care of the victory. Lynnette Murray (Williamsport/S. Williamsport) and Janet Paterson (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) both went 3-for-5, Murray posting a double along with three runs scored and two RBI.  Paterson added a pair of RBIs.  Heather Johnson (Williamsport/Williamsport) went 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, and Tricia Bailey (Canton/Canton) was 2-for-3 with a run scored.  Molly Shuey (Tower City/Williams Valley) was the winning pitcher, throwing the first four innings, allowing four hits and four runs.  Shuey improves to 6-10 overall.
The Lady Eagles complete their conference season on the road at Clarion University tomorrow, Sat., April 26, at 1 p.m.

24 April 2003 -- HAVEN SOFTBALL TAKES ONE OF TWO AGAINST THE ROCK

>>Box Score (Game 1)                >>>Box Score (Game 2)

(Slippery Rock, Pa.) – The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania softball team (11-19, 6-10 PSAC West) won one out of two games in a road doubleheader at Slippery Rock University (10-24, 3-15 PSAC West), falling 11-6 before picking up the 8-0 shutout in the final game.
The Haven was leading by one run before a six-run inning for Slippery Rock dashed hopes of the victory in an 11-6 loss in the opener of the conference twinbill.  The Lady Eagles held a 4-3 advantage after three and a half frames, but they gave up six runs to SRU in the bottom of the inning to trail 9-4 with three innings to go.  Two more LHU scores were to come, including a homer to left field off the bat of second baseman Lynnette Murray (Williamsport/S. Williamsport), but the home squad matched that performance to steal away the win.
Outfielder Lynn Spiezio (Trooper/Methacton) and shortstop Courtney Hughes (Schwenksville/Souderton) both recorded two hits, while Murray was 1-for-4 including her home run along with two RBI.  From the pitcher’s circle, Molly Shuey (Tower City/Williams Valley) took the loss, falling to 5-10 on the season.
Lock Haven put a halt on any SRU scoring in the second game, coming away with the 8-0 shutout.  Lynnette Murray cranked out her second grand slam of the season to account for four of six runs in the fifth inning, helping end the game early on account of the mercy rule. Both Murray and Lynn Spiezio scored in the first inning, Spiezio after a sacrifice by Jocelyn Tutrani (Royersford/Spring-Ford) and Murray on a double down the left field line by Courtney Hughes.  Murray homered with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth inning, and a deep single by Danielle Fraser (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) plated two more before the close to give LHU the 8-0 advantage.
Kelly Deitrick (Danville/Danville) breaks even at 4-4 with the pitching win, going all five innings while allowing five hits.  Murray was 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored, and Hughes went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run.

>>Box Score (Game 1)     >>>Box Score (Game 2)

(Indiana, Pa.) – The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania softball team (10-18, 5-9 PSAC West) dropped two games on the road at Indiana (Pa.) University (19-13, 10-4 PSAC West) this afternoon, losing 4-2 and 6-2 in the conference doubleheader.
The Lady Eagles relinquished a 2-1 lead in the first game before falling 4-2, allowing three runs to score in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Indiana hit a lead-off homer in the sixth to tie up the game at 2-2, then scored another two another home run in the same inning to take over the lead.  Shortstop Courtney Hughes (Schwenksville/Souderton) paced Haven batters after going 2-for-3 including an RBI single in the second inning. The Haven’s second run scored on an IUP error.  Sophomore hurler Molly Shuey (Tower City/Williams Valley) received the loss falling to 5-9 overall after going 5.1 innings.
In game two, Lock Haven out-hit Indiana, 12-9, but still could not match the home team’s six-run production and fell, 6-2.  The Lady Eagles came out strong, registering four hits in the first inning but only coming away with one run on a single by Heather Johnson (Williamsport/Williamsport).  Another single off the bat of Johnson scored the second LHU run in the top of the third frame.  Indiana posted two runs in the second inning, single tallies in the third and fourth, then another pair in the sixth to wrap up the win.
Lock Haven pitching was handled by Kelly Deitrick (Danville/Danville), who went four innings and gave up four of the six runs to fall to 3-4 overall.  Lynnette Murray (Williamsport/S. Williamsport) went 4-for-4 at the plate and recorded two stolen bases.  Kristin Frantz (Boyertown/Boyertown) was 3-for-3 and scored both LHU runs, while Lynn Spiezio (Trooper/Methacton) and Johnson were both 2-for-4 on the game.

(California, Pa.) – The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania softball team (10-16, 5-7 PSAC West) lost both games in a set of contests on the road against PSAC West opponent California (Pa.) University (17-3, 10-2 PSAC West), falling 4-1 and 6-1.
California and Lock Haven both registered eight hits in the first game but the Vulcans capitalized for four runs to the Lady Eagles’ one, winning by three.  California posted two runs in the second inning to take the early lead.  Lock Haven’s Courtney Hughes (Schwenksville/Souderton) reached base in the fourth frame with a single and was eventually hit home on a sacrifice fly by Heather Johnson (Williamsport/Williamsport) for LHU’s only run of the game. California answered with a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings, and LHU was unable to make up the difference.
Lynn Spiezio (Trooper, Pa./Methacton) and Hughes both registered two hits on the game to lead the LHU bats.  Molly Shuey (Tower City/Williams Valley) takes the pitching loss, giving up six hits and three earned runs after throwing five innings with four strikeouts. She falls to 5-8 on the season.

In the nightcap, California scored early and in controlling fashion with three runs in the first and a total of six by the bottom of the fourth frame.  Though LHU out-hit California, 6-5, the squad’s only run came in the top of the sixth inning as Lynnette Murray (Williamsport/S. Williamsport) pounded out her second home run of the season.  Murray went 2-for-3 on the game to pace Haven batters. Jill Sechrist (Canton/Canton) took the pitching loss after giving up all six runs. 12 April 2003 -- HAVEN SOFTBALL SWEEPS CLARION, 2-1 and 6-5

>>Box Score (Game 1)     >>>Box Score (Game 2)

(Lock Haven, Pa.) – The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania softball team (10-14, 5-5 PSAC West) earned its second-straight conference sweep, gathering a pair of close wins, 2-1 and 5-6, over Clarion University (11-15-1, 5-5 PSAC West) this afternoon on Lawrence Field.
Game one went four extra innings before The Haven was able to pull out the 2-1 victory.  It was a pitcher’s dual, as Clarion’s April Shannon had a no-hitter going for seven innings and tallied 17 strikeouts over the 11-inning stretch and Molly Shuey (Tower City/Williams Valley) was able to hold off the Golden Eagles, giving up only four scattered hits through the first eight frames.  Clarion scored first in the 10th frame, as the runner placed on second (international tie-breaker) advanced to third on a sacrifice then home on a single through the right side by Nicole Furnia.  The Haven answered, as Jocelyn Tutrani (Royersford/Spring-Ford) stepped up and sent a deep ball to left field to score Lynnette Murray (Williamsport/S. Williamsport) to tie up the game at 1-1.
In the 11th inning, Clarion had runners on second and third with two outs when LHU’s Lynn Spiezio (Trooper, Pa./Methacton) made a diving catch in centerfield to close out the top half of the inning without allowing any runs to score.  With LHU now on the offensive, Spiezio again came up big, this time at the plate with an RBI single to left center field to score Kristin Franz (Boyertown/Boyertown) for the extra-inning victory.
Shuey gets the complete game, 11-inning victory to improve to 5-7 overall.  Clarion’s April Shannon posted an amazing 17 strikeouts but has to settle for the loss, dropping her overall record to 5-6.
Another one-run victory was in store for the Lady Eagles in game two, as The Haven scored three runs in the fourth inning to leave with the 6-5 win.  Clarion was the first to score, posting two in the second inning after pounding out four hits, including two doubles.  The Haven responded with two of its own in the same frame, as both Amanda Sheets (Hughesville/Hughesville) and Kristin Franz scored on a deep single to center by Janet Paterson (Frederick, Md./Walkersville).  Clarion added two more in the third on a walk and a wild pitch, while Lock Haven posted its third run of the game off a double by Lynnette Murray.
The Haven defense and pitching settled in after the third frame, giving up only one more run in the sixth inning. Offensively, a three run-spurt in the fourth off of a passed ball and RBI hits by Janet Paterson and Lynn Spiezio would prove enough to hold on for the victory.
Kelly Dietrick (Danville, Pa./Danville) earned the pitching win, improving to 3-3 overall after throwing four innings.  Molly Shuey entered to close the deal, throwing one and one-third innings to pick up the save.  Clarion’s Kim Overholt threw all six frames and falls to 1-3 on the season.
The Lady Eagles’ scheduled doubleheader at Millersville University on Sunday, April 13, has been postponed because the Marauders’ will be making up a conference game in it place.  Lock Haven’s next contest is a doubleheader at California (Pa.) University on Tues., April 15, at 3 p.m.

Lady Eagles Defeat Slippery Rock, 3-2 and 9-1

>>Box Score (Game 1)     >>>Box Score (Game 2)

(Lock Haven, Pa.) – Hot bats led the Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania softball team (8-14, 3-5 PSAC West) to two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division wins over Slippery Rock University (8-14, 1-7 PSAC West) this afternoon, 3-2 and 9-1 on Lawrence Field.

Leading the Lady Eagles was senior All-American Lynnette Murray (Williamsport/S. Williamsport), who helped her team garner the pair of wins by producing game-winning hits in both contests.  The first game went into extra innings where Murray smacked a double, sending Lynn Spiezio (Trooper, Pa./Methacton) home to score the game-winner.  In the second half of the twinbill, Murray cranked out a grand slam over the leftfield fence, ending the game early in the sixth inning.  The senior second baseman had five hits on the day, including three singles, a double and the grand-slam homer to pace the squad.

Other hot Haven hitters were Spiezio, who tallied four singles and Danielle Fraser (West Milford, N.J/West Milford), who hit a single and a double for the Lady Eagles offense.  Slippery Rock managed to get only seven total hits past the LHU defense, including just three in game two.  Lori Slozat and Caitlin Chandler both recorded single hits in each game, while The Rock’s Beth Rebholz scored a homerun for her only hit in game one.

LHU’s Kelly Dietrick (Danville, Pa./Danville) scored the first pitching win, raising her record to 2-3, while Jill Sechrist (Canton/Canton) registered her second career victory (2-4) in game two.  Suffering the pitching losses for SRU were Candice Nase, now 3-4, and Nikki Cothran, dropping her record to 2-4.

6 April 2003 -- LADY EAGLE SOFTBALL SURRENDERS TWINBILL TO EDINBORO

>>Box Score (Game 1)     >>>Box Score (Game 2)

(Lock Haven, Pa.) – The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania softball team (6-14, 1-5 PSAC West) lost both games of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division match up against Edinboro University (12-10, 4-2 PSAC West), falling 5-0 and 4-2 in action this afternoon on LHU’s Lawrence Field.
The Haven’s bats fell silent in the first game, producing only two hits while giving up 11 hits and five runs.  Edinboro plated its first runner in the second inning off a base hit by Tara Frantz, then added two more in the third frame on a long single to right field by Andrea Palmieri.  EUP’s Basil Davis and Erin Leveille both added RBI base knocks in the sixth and seventh frames, respectively, to round out scoring.  The Haven’s two hits of the game were recorded by Lynn Spiezio (Trooper, Pa./Methacton) and Janet Paterson (Frederick, Md./Walkersville).  Molly Shuey (Tower City/Williams Valley) takes the pitching loss, falling to 4-7 on the season after throwing 5-2/3 innings.  Edinboro’s Jennifer Nimelli improves to 6-4 with the pitching win, earning the complete game shutout.
The Lady Eagles managed to match the Fighting Scots’ hit production in the second game of the twinbill, but could not mirror the number of runs scored, falling 4-2 in the nightcap.  Things got messy for Lock Haven in the top of the third inning, as an error and three walks loaded the bases and brought home three Edinboro runners.  Jennifer Ronald drew the bases-loaded walk from LHU’s Jill Sechrist (Canton/Canton) to score the first run, then a shot to the short centerfield gap by Leveille brought home two more.  Edinboro scored again in the fourth inning on a base hit to left to move into a 4-0 lead.  The Haven fought back but it proved to be too late, tacking on two runs in the final two innings.  Lynn Spiezio crossed home in the sixth frame after getting on base on an error, stealing second, then advancing on a hard hit double to leftfield by Lynnette Murray (Williamsport/S. Williamsport).  Leading off in the seventh for LHU, Amanda Sheets (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) cranked out the team’s first home run of the season over the left field fence, bringing the score to 4-2.  On the game, Kristen Tome (Warren/Warren Area) led LHU with two hits (2-3).  Sechrist (1-4) took the pitching loss after throwing 5-1/3 innings while allowing four hits.  For Edinboro, Kim Fleissner earned the win to improve to 3-3 on the season, while Nimelli entered the game in the bottom of the seventh in relief, picking up the save.
The Lady Eagles will return to action on Tues., April 8, when they host Slippery Rock University. The PSAC West doubleheader is slated for a 3 p.m. start.

LHU SOFTBALL DROPS TWO IN OPENING DAY OF REBEL GAMES

(Orlando, Fla.) – The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania softball team (1-3) went 0-2 in their first day of competition at the Rebel Games in Orlando, Fla.  The Lady Eagles lost to Adelphi University, 11-2, before falling to C.W. Post, 5-2, in the nightcap.
The Haven held a 2-1 lead after three innings of play versus Adelphi, but gave up three runs in the fifth and six tallies in the sixth frame to lose by the 11-2 final margin.  In the second inning, LHU catcher Janet Paterson (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) scored on a sacrifice fly by Colleen Welsh (Pottsville/Pottsville) after getting on base with a single.  Amanda Sheets (Hughesville/Hughesville) scored on an error later that same inning after reaching base on a fielder’s choice.  Molly Shuey (Tower City/Williams Valley) takes the loss, falling to 0-2 on the season after going 4.2 innings and giving up eight hits and five earned runs.
In the nightcap, Lock Haven again took an early lead, but a three-run inning by C.W. Post in the fifth frame spelled the end and the 5-2 loss for the Lady Eagles.  Both of LHU’s runs came in the third inning off a long single by Lynnette Murray (Williamsport/South Williamsport), who plated both Danielle Fraser (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) and Welsh in the effort.  Pitcher Kelly Deitrick (Danville/Danville) is now 1-1 with the loss, throwing the full seven innings and giving up nine hits.  Murray went 2-for-4 on the game with a stolen base and two RBI, while Fraser added two hits on a 2-for-3 outing.
The Lady Eagle softball team remains in Orlando, Fla., from March 9-15.

Day Two (3/10)

LADY EAGLE SOFTBALL WINS A PAIR AT REBEL GAMES

(Orlando, Fla.) – The No. 25-ranked Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania softball team (3-3) scored two wins at the Rebel Games in Orlando, Fla., defeating No. 11-ranked Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, 7-6, before earning an extra-inning, 6-3, victory over Ferris State.
Against the Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Cougars, The Haven scored one in the first inning off  Jocelyn Tutrani’s (Royersford/Spring-Ford) RBI single.  The Cougars matched that score with one of their own in the second inning, then plated five more in the third.  LHU answered with five runs in the bottom of the set, capitalizing off of a two-RBI double from Lynnette Murray (Williamsport/South Williamsport).  Other runs in the inning came after drawing four walks and a hit-by-pitch.  The winning run was tallied in the fifth frame, as Murray came through again, this time with an RBI single to score Lynn Spiezio (Trooper/Methacton) and bring the final to 7-6 in favor of the Lady Eagles.  Molly Shuey (Tower City/Williams Valley) picked up her first win of the season in relief, throwing the final 4.2 innings with five strikeouts.
The Lady Eagles assembled a four-run eighth inning to capture the 6-3 victory against Ferris State.  With the game knotted at two after seven innings of play, the international tie-breaker rule came into effect and LHU started with Angie Gula (Jim Thorpe/Jim Thorpe) positioned on second base.  Gula would score on an RBI single off the bat of Lynnette Murray, and three more Haven runners would advance on Ferris State errors to give LHU the 6-2 lead entering into the bottom of the frame.  Ferris State brought one runner home, but the Lady Eagles held strong to maintain the lead and take the 6-3 win. Molly Shuey again received the win, improving to 2-2 on the season after throwing 3.1 innings in relief with three strikeouts and no runs allowed.
The Lady Eagle softball team remains in Orlando, Fla., through March 15.

Day Three (3/11)

LADY EAGLE SOFTBALL DROPS TWO AT REBEL GAMES

(Osceola, Fla.) – The No. 25-ranked Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania softball team fell to 3-5 overall after a pair of one-run losses to Dowling College (6-5) and the University of Southern Indiana (2-1) at the Rebel Spring Games in Osceola, Fla.
The Lady Eagles were ahead of Dowling College, 5-3, entering into the final inning, but the Golden Lions collected three runs to move into the lead and take the 6-5 victory.  LHU freshman Jill Sechrist (Canton/Canton) took the loss after throwing 6.2 innings with four strikeouts.  Despite the loss The Haven out-hit Dowling 12-6 paced by Lynn Spiezio (Trooper/Methacton), who was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.  Both Courtney Hughes (Schwenksville/Souderton) and Janet Paterson (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) registered two hits, each including one double.
Against Southern Indiana, Lock Haven scored one run in the first inning, but a two-run frame for USI in the fourth was enough to hand the Lady Eagles the 2-1 loss.  LHU’s only run came off the bat of Lynnette Murray (Williamsport/South Williamsport), who hit a single shot that allowed Spiezio to reach home from second base. Molly Shuey (Tower City/Williams Valley) falls to 2-3 on the season, receiving the loss after throwing all seven innings with three strikeouts.
The Lady Eagle softball team remains at the Rebel Spring Games through March 15.

Day Four/Five (3/13-14)

LHU SOFTBALL GOES 2-2 TO WRAP UP ACTION AT REBEL GAMES

(Osceola, Fla.) – The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania softball team (5-7) went 2-2 in the final two days of competition at the Rebel Games in Osceola, Fla.  The Lady Eagles defeated Merrimack College (6-5) and the University of New Haven (2-1) in extra inn
Lock Haven scored a ten-inning, 6-5, win over Merrimack College, getting two runs in the top of the final frame to tuck away the victory.  The two squads played to a 3-3 tie after Merrimack tallied three runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Both LHU and Merrimack crossed runners home in the ninth frame, but a two-run outing in the tenth for the Lady Eagles was enough to out-do their opponents’ one run performance for the victory.  Molly Shuey (Tower City/Williams Valley) earned the win, taking over in the final 3.1 innings.  Lynn Spiezio (Trooper/Methacton) went 3-5 with two RBI to lead LHU at the plate while Lynnette Murray’s (Williamsport/South Williamsport) only hit of the game was the game-winning double.
The Lady Eagles also used an extra inning to score the 2-1 victory over the University of New Haven. A scoreless tie after seven frames brought on the eighth inning, with LHU posting two runs in the top of the frame.  New Haven got one runner across home, but the Haven defense held out for the one-run win.  Molly Shuey again earned the win on the mound.  At the plate, Lynn Spiezio went 2-for-4 and scored the winning run.
Lady Eagle losses came against Ashland and St. Joseph’s College.  Lock Haven was outdone offensively against Ashland, giving up eight runs and 10 hits.  Jocelyn Tutrani (Royersford/Spring-Ford) and Heather Johnson (Williamsport/Williamsport) both recorded RBI doubles to bring home the only two LHU runs of the game.  On the mound, Molly Shuey received the loss after entering the game in the fourth inning.
Errors plagued the Lady Eagles against St. Joseph’s, as four LHU errors had a part in all four of the opponent’s scores.  Janet Paterson (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) posted an RBI double in the sixth frame to score LHU’s only run of the game.  Kelly Dietrick (Danville/Danville) took the pitching loss.
Lock Haven softball returns home, next scheduled for Wednesday, March 15 versus Bloomsburg University.  The doubleheader is slated for a 2:30 p.m. start on LHU’s Lawrence Field.
