2002-2003 Lady Eagle Results

2/22  -- at PSAC Championships (8th/13 tms)

(West Chester, Pa.) - The Lady Eagle swim team finished competition at the 2003 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Swimming Championships being held at West Chester, Pa., rounding out one of its most successful seasons in eighth place with 98 team points. The point total is the highest since the 1995 season, when LHU finished seventh in a 10-team field with 104 points. This year's championships fielded 13 teams, with West Chester University capturing the team title (594.50 points). 
      A total of seven school records were set by Lady Eagle swimmers, including the 200 Butterfly record by Isabel Carniero (Rio de Janiero, Brazil), who was the Haven's top finisher with runner-up honors in the event with a time of 2:09.16.

2/20-2/21  -- at PSAC Championships - Day One/Two

(West Chester, Pa.) - The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania women’s swim team is in ninth place after two days of competition at the 2003 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships being hosted by West Chester University.  The Lady Eagles are ninth in the 13-team field with 23 points. West Chester currently leads the women's race with 397.50 points. 
      
  Tatiana Patakyova (Poprad-Matejouce, Slovak Republic/Gymnazium Pop. Nabrezie) placed fourth in the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 Butterfly, recording a time of 2:11.34 in the 200 IM finals and 58.84 in the 100 Fly finals.  The Lady Eagle 200 Freestyle Relay team of Patakyova, Cindy Smoker (Montoursville/Montoursville), Wendi Cerra (Berwick/Berwick) and Isabel Carniero (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) was ninth, touching the wall in a final time of 1:42.56.  The 400 Medley Relay squad consisting of Kristen Maksinchuk (Pittsburgh/Plum), Lora Reheard (Airville/Red Lion), Cerra and Smoker was 11th with a finals time of 4:37.83.  
            In day two of competition, the 800 Freestyle Relay of Patakyova, Smoker, Cerra and Carniero was eighth in 8:09.09, while the 200 Medley Relay of Maksinchuk, Patakyova, Carniero, and Sara McClure (North East/North East) finished 10th in 1:56.93. 
            The PSAC Swimming Championships conclude tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 22.

2/9/03  -- at Panther Collegiate Invitional / Clarion Last Chance Meet

(Pittsburgh/Clarion, Pa.) - The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania women’s swim team (2-5) was on the road both days this weekend, swimming at the Panther Collegiate Invitational at the University of Pittsburgh on Saturday before finishing up at the Clarion Last Chance Meet on Sunday. 
            Tatiana Patakyova (Poprad-Matejouce, Slovak Republic/Gymnazium Pop. Nabrezie) set a pair of new school marks, edging out the competition for first-place finishes in the 100 Butterfly in 58.79 at the Panther Collegiate Invitational and the 500 Freestyle in 5:17.09 at the Clarion Last Chance Meet.
            The Lady Eagle 200 Freestyle Relay of Patakyova, Isabel Carniero (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), Cindy Smoker (Montoursville/Montoursville) and Wendi Cerra (Berwick/Berwick) scored a first-place finish at the Panther Collegiate invite in a time of 1:44.20.  The Haven took three of the top six spots in the 100 Butterfly, with Patakyova winning and Carniero (1:00.80) and Cerra (1:04.51) placing fourth and sixth, respectively.   Smoker qualified for the conference championships as well at the meet, finishing 11th in the 50 Freestyle (26.07), 10th in the 100 Freestyle (57.86) along with a third-place finish at the Clarion meet in the 200 Freestyle (2:05.87).  
            The Lady Eagles will next be competing at the 2003 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Swimming Championships being held at West Chester University from Feb. 20-22.

2/1/03  -- Edinboro 101, Lock Haven 97

(Lock Haven, Pa.) – The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania women’s swim team (2-5) won nine of 11 events but could not get past Edinboro University (4-6), falling 101-97 in their final home dual meet. Tatiana Patakyova (Poprad-Matejouce, Slovak Republic/Gymnazium Pop. Nabrezie) bettered her own school record in the 200 Individual Medley in the process.
            Patakyova swam a 2:10.30 in the 200 Individual Medley to break her own record in the event, and also scored an individual victory in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:10.74.  Isabel Carniero (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) won the 1000 Freestyle (11:05.93) and the 100 Butterfly (59.72).  Other individual winners include the Lady Eagles’ Cindy Smoker (Montoursville/Montoursville) in the 50 Freestyle (26.41), Kristen Maksinchuk (Pittsburgh/Plum) in the 100 Backstroke (1:05.12) and Tracy Latchaw (New Brunswick, N.J./New Brunswick Township) in the 500 Freestyle (5:34.09). 
            Both Haven relay teams notched the victory, winning the 200 Medley Relay in 1:56.75 and the 200 Freestyle Relay in 1:47.50. Maksinchuk, Patakyova, Carniero and Wendi Cerra (Berwick/Berwick) swam in the first-place 200 medley relay, while Cerra, Latchaw and Smoker were joined by Sara McClure (NorthEast/North East) for the 200 freestyle relay victory.
          The Lady Eagle swim team will next be at the Pitt Invitational on February 8 and at the Clarion University Invitational on February 9.

1/18/03  -- Kutztown 133, Lock Haven 61

(Kutztown, Pa.) – The school records continue to fall for the Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania women’s swimming team, as freshman Isabel Carniero (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) shattered the existing 1000 Freestyle mark in the Lady Eagles’ 133-61 loss on the road at Kutztown University.  
            Carniero’s winning time of 11:04.40 in the 1000 Freestyle event was 18 seconds faster than the existing LHU record.  Carneiro also finished second in the 100 Butterfly (1:00.29) and anchored the winning 400 Freestyle Relay.
            Tatiana Patakyova (Poprad-Matejouce, Slovak Republic/Gymnazium Pop. Nabrezie) collected three first-place finishes, winning the 100 Backstroke (1:01.59) and the 100 Butterfly (59.37) along with swimming the lead-off leg of the winning 400 Freestyle Relay.
            Wendi Cerra (Berwick/Berwick) and Cindy Smoker (Montoursville/Montoursville) were the remaining two members of the first-place relay squad, which finished in a winning time of 3:50.02.  Smoker also finished second in the 50 Freestyle (26.76) and third in the 100 Freestyle (59.47).  Cerra was third in the 100 Butterfly (1:08.04) and fourth in the 50 Freestyle (27.15). 
            Up next for The Haven swimmers is their final home meet of the season, a dual against Edinboro University on Saturday, February 1, at 1 p.m.

1/11/03  -- California (Pa.) University 69, Lock Haven 51
                          Juniata College 69, Lock Haven 53

(California, Pa.) – The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania women’s swimming team opened up the second half of its season on the road at California, Pa., falling in a double dual meet to California (Pa.) University and Juniata College.  The Lady Eagles lost, 69-51, to California and 69-53 to Juniata. 
            Despite the pair of losses, two Lady Eagle rookies, Tatiana Patakyova (Poprad-Matejouce, Slovak Republic/Gymnazium Pop. Nabrezie) and Isabel Carniero (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), set new school standards in the 200 Freestyle and 200 Fly.  Patakyova won the 200 Freestyle event in 1:57.58 to claim the LHU mark by just over a second.  She was also a member of the winning 200 Medley Relay team which won in 1:57.89 and finished second in the 200 Breaststroke with a final time of 2:34.97.
            Carniero won the 200 Fly in a school-record time of 2:11.57 and also scored a second-place finish in the 100 Freestyle race in 57.01. 
            Other members of the winning 200 Medley Relay included Kristen Maksinchuk (Pittsburgh/Plum), Wendi Cerra (Berwick/Berwick) and Cindy Smoker (Montoursville/Montoursville). Maksinchuk added a third place finish in the 100 Backstroke (1:07.19) and a fifth-place in the 200 Backstroke (2:28.90). Smoker finished second in the 50 Freestyle (26.49) and fourth in the 100 Freestyle (58.09).  
            The Lock Haven swim team will next travel to Kutztown University on Sat., Jan. 18, for a 1 p.m. dual meet.

11/23/02  -- 5th Place at Golden Bear Swimming Invitational (Kutztown, Pa.)

(Kutztown, Pa.) – The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania women’s swimming team placed fifth at the Golden Bear Swimming Invitational being hosted by Kutztown University this weekend.  The Haven 400 Freestyle Relay team scored a first-place finish, while Tatiana Patakyova (Poprad-Matejouce, Slovak Republic/Gymnazium Pop. Nabrezie) won three individual races and set a new meet, pool and team record in the 200 Individual Medley.  
            The Haven 400 Freestyle Relay squad of Tracy Latchaw (New Brunswick, N.J./New Brunswick Township), Vickie Kephart (Pottsville/Pottsville Area), Jackie Race (Loganton/Saucon Valley), and Sara McClure (North East/North East) turned in a first-place finish, combining for a time of 3:52.01. 
            Patakyova was the individual winner in the 200 medley, breaking the pool and team records after touching the wall in 2:11.02.  The rookie Lady Eagle also won the 100 Backstroke (1:00.48) and the 200 Backstroke (2:10.95).  
            The Lady Eagle 200 Freestyle Relay team was second while the 200 Medley Relay squad finished in third place.  Wendi Cerra (Berwick/Berwick) was third in the 100 Butterfly in a conference championship qualifying time of 1:03.96 and also wound up fifth in the 50 Freestyle (26.77).  Jackie Race finished fourth in the 400 Individual Medley (5:16.94). 
            The Lock Haven women’s swim team does not return to competition until January 11, 2003, when it travels to California (Pa.) University for a 1 p.m. dual meet.

11/16/02  -- Lock Haven 125, Millersville 124 (Millersville, Pa.)

(Millersville, Pa.) – The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania women’s swimming team (2-1) edged Millersville University, 125-124, in conference action on the road this weekend.  Lock Haven swimmers won eight events, and the Lady Eagles’ Tatiana Patakyova (Poprad-Matejouce, Slovak Republic/Gymnazium Pop. Nabrezie) continued her tear through the Haven record books, breaking her own mark in the 100 Butterfly.
            Patakyova was the 100 Fly winner in a school-record pace of 59.18, and also scored first-place finishes in the 50 Freestyle (25.01), 200 Individual Medley (2:12.80), and as a part of the 200 Medley Relay.  
            Tracy Latchaw (New Brunswick, N.J./New Brunswick Township) and Kristen Maksinchuk (Pittsburgh/Plum) both recorded two individual top finishes.  Latchaw produced wins in the 500 Freestyle (5:50.44) and 1000 Freestyle (11:55.57), while Maksinchuk touched the wall first in the 100 Backstroke (1:05.56) and 200 Backstroke (2:27.93) and also had a part in the 200-medley relay victory. 
            In addition to Patakyova and Maksinchuk, Wendi Cerra (Berwick/Berwick) and Cindy Smoker (Montoursville/Montoursville) were also members of the winning relay squad (1:57.36).  
            The Lock Haven women’s swim team next travels to the Golden Bear Invitational on Fri. through Sat., November 22-23, hosted by Kutztown University.

11/9/02  -- Lock Haven 117, Mansfield 78 (Zimmerli Pool - Lock Haven, Pa.)

(Lock Haven, Pa.) – The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania women’s swimming (1-1) defeated Mansfield University, 117-78, this afternoon in Zimmerli Pool.  The Haven posted nine first-place finishes, including a new school record in the 100 Backstroke by freshman Tatiana Patakyova (Poprad-Matejouce, Slovak Republic/Gymnazium Pop. Nabrezie.
            Patakyova won the 100 Backstroke in 1:00.44, breaking a 25-year old LHU record (Joy Sunderberg, 1977, 1:01.63) in the process.  The rookie also earned a first-place finish in the 100 Breastroke and was a part of the winning 200 Medley Relay squad.  
Tracy Latchaw (New Brunswick, N.J./New Brunswick Township) was first in the 1000 Freestyle (11:55.67) and was on the winning 400 Freestyle Relay team.  Wendi Cerra (Berwick/Berwick) earned a first-place finish in the 50 Freestyle (26.70), the 100 Butterfly (1:06.00), and was a member of the 200 medley relay squad. Jackie Race (Loganton/Saucon Valley) touched the wall first in the 200 Individual Medley (2:25.10) and was on the 400 Freestyle Relay team.  Cindy Smoker (Montoursville/Montoursville) was the 100 Freestyle winner (57.99) and contributed on the winning 200 Medley Relay. 
            The winning 200 Medley Relay squad consisted of Kristen Maksinchuk (Pittsburgh/Plum), Patakyova, Cerra and Smoker, while swimming in the top-finishing 400 Freestyle Relay team was Latchaw, Vickie Kephart (Pottsville/Pottsville Area), Race, and Sara McClure (North East/North East).
            The Lock Haven women’s swim team next travels to Millersville University on Sat., Nov. 16, for a 1 p.m. dual meet.

11/2/02  -- East Stroudsburg 157, Lock Haven 91 (Zimmerli Pool - Lock Haven, Pa.)

(Lock Haven, Pa.) – The Lock Haven women’s swim team dropped its home-opening dual meet to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponent East Stroudsburg University, 157-91, this afternoon.  Despite the loss, The Haven 200-Yard Medley Relay posted a new school mark, while freshman Tatiana Patakyova (Poprad-Matejouce, Slovak Republic/Gymnazium Pop. Nabrezie) added two new LHU records in individual events.
            Lock Haven’s 200-yard medley relay squad of Kristen Maksinchuk (Pittsburgh/Plum), Patakyova, Wendi Cerra (Berwick/Berwick), and Cindy Smoker (Montoursville/Montoursville) etched a new piece of school history as they touched the wall in 1:56.22.  Patakyova posted school records in the 200 Backstroke with a winning time of 2:10.02, four seconds faster than any of her opponents, while also setting a record with an eight second victory in the 200 Individual Medley in a final time of 2:11.48.  The freshman also placed first in the 200 Butterfly (2:14.50).
            Another first place finish for The Haven in the individual events was won by Wendi Cerra, who posted a 1:03.83 for the victory in the 100 Butterfly. 
            The Lock Haven women’s swim team will be back in action on Sat., Nov. 9, when they host Mansfield University at Zimmerli Pool at 1 p.m.

10/26/02  -- at Mansfield Relays

(Lock Haven, Pa.) – The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania women’s swim team opened up the 2002-2003 season this weekend at the Mansfield Relays.  The Lady Eagles recorded three first-place and two runner-up finishes.  The 400-Yard Freestyle Relay set a pool record, while Haven newcomer Tatiana Patakyova (Poprad-Matejouce, Slovak Republic/Gymnazium Pop. Nabrezie) posted two new school records.
            Patakyova’s records came on splits of 59.71 in the 100 Butterfly and a 54.35 in the 100 Freestyle.  Lock Haven’s team victories came in the 300-Yard Backstroke Relay (3:14.23), the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay (1:44.21), and the 400-Yard Freestyle Relay (3:50.89), which was also a pool record.  Patakyova swam the lead-off legs of both freestyle relays and the final leg of the backstroke relay event.  Kristen Maksinchuk (Pittsburgh/Plum) led off in the backstroke relay, while the team of Patakyova, Wendi Cerra (Berwick/Berwick), Cindy Smoker (Montoursville/Montoursville), and Sara McLure (North East/Northeast) manned both freestyle relays.  McLure also had a part in the backstroke relay victory.
            The Lady Eagles posted runner-up finishes in the 300-Yard Butterfly Relay and the 800-Yard Freestyle Relay.
            Lock Haven swimming will host East Stroudsburg University next Saturday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m.
