SHIPPENSBURG
AND SLIPPERY ROCK WIN PSAC TRACK & FIELD TITLES
(Lock
Haven, Pa.) – Shippensburg University and Slippery Rock
University won the men’s and women’s team titles at
2003 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Men’s and
Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships being held
this weekend at Hubert Jack Stadium on the campus of Lock
Haven University.
Shipppensburg’s men pick up their 13th
team trophy and first since the 1997 season, which happens
to also be the last time the conference championships were
held in Lock Haven. It is the conference-leading 11th
overall team victory for the Slippery Rock women and their
first since the 2001 season.
Kutztown University athletes swept the individual
championship honors, as Shaun Landis was named the Outstanding Field Athlete and Scott Eisenhart
received Most Outstanding Athlete and Outstanding Track Athlete honors.
Landis won the triple jump (49’2 ½”) and the
high jump (6’8 ¾”), while Eisenhart won the 400
meters in stadium record time of 47.54, helped the 4x400
meter relay to a victory in championship record setting
time, anchored the second-place 4x100 meter relay and was
seventh in the 200 meters (22.23).
Indiana University’s Becky Bullard was selected
the Most Outstanding Athlete and Field Athlete of the
championships, winning the heptathlon (4,829), the high
jump (5’6 ¾”) and the 1,500 meter run (4:44.38) while
also anchoring the sixth-place 4x400 meter team. Lock
Haven’s Jennifer Farrow received the Outstanding Track
Athlete award after becoming only the eighth female in
PSAC history to win four-straight titles with her 400
meters victory in 55.41.
Farrow also captured a win in the 200 meters
(25.09), anchored the winning 4x100 meter relay and was on
the fifth-place 4x400 meter relay.
WOMEN:
On the women’s side, Shippensburg’s Tunisia
Lacy set a new PSAC all-time record in the triple jump,
going 42’5” to win the event. Lacy also grabbed the
long jump title with a new stadium record of 19’4 ½”.
Slippery Rock’s Linsey Westerman defended her
titles in both hurdle events, taking home the hardware in
the 100 meter hurdles in championship meet record time of
14.21 while winning the 400 meter hurdles in a
stadium-record performance of 1:02.01.
Millersville’s Christina Carpenter was the 100 meter
dash champion (12.29). Shippensburg’s Kelly Stewart took
her second-straight 10,000 meter title (38:46.20).
Niya
Adams of Kutztown became a three-time champion in the 800
meters, breaking the stadium record with a run of 2:11.13
in the finals.
Indiana’s
Mindy Sawtelle captured the 3,000 (10:16.77) and 5,000
(17:27.47) meter titles, both in provisionally qualifying
times.
The top six
finishers in the women’s javelin all met NCAA
provisional marks, with Slippery Rock’s Karyn McCready
defending her title with a stadium record of 151’10”.
Jocelyn
Held of Lock Haven became a three-time champion in the
pole vault with her winning mark of 11’0”.
Slippery Rock’s Mackenzie Gurcak won the shot put
in 44’1”, while Millersville’s Beth Lord was the
discus champion in 142’1”.
A win in the 3,000-meter steeplechase by
Mansfield’s Charity Learn (11:09.26) gave the
Mountaineers their first PSAC champion in the history of
the program.
In the relays, Lock
Haven University captured the 4x100 crown in 47.81, while
Kutztown set a stadium record with a winning time of
3:52.25 in the 4x400 meter relay.
MEN:
In the men’s competition, Edinboro’s Aaron Rowe
made it two in a row with the win in the 5,000 meter run,
setting a new PSAC championship record of 14:25.92.
Millersville’s Chris Trill also defended his title,
winning the 3000 meter steeplechase in nationals
provisional time of 9:23.12.
In the
javelin, the top seven competitors all matched or bettered
the NCAA provisionally qualifying mark and Lock Haven’s
Nick Slotterback earned an automatic bid to nationals with
his winning throw of 220’5”.
Mark Stallings of Millersville repeated his 10,000
meter title, winning this year with a time of 31:10.91,
and teammate Brian Good set a stadium record with a leap
of 24’1 ½” for the long jump win.
Shippensburg’s Matt Peters won both discus (161’11”
and shot put titles (52’4 ½”).
Indiana’s Jermaine Clayton won the 100 meter dash
in 10.90, while Alton Richards of Shippensburg pocketed
the 200 meter title in 21.65.
West Chester’s Ryan Waltermyer won the 800 meters in
1:54.97.
Shippensburg’s John Somers was the 1,500 meter
champion (3:59.76).
In the hurdle events, Ben Steingrabe of Slippery Rock won
the 110 meter high hurdles (14.79), while East
Stroudsburg’s Mark Stinson was the 400 meter hurdle
winner in 53.19.
Lock Haven’s Andy Pollison won the pole vault, clearing
15’8”.
The men’s 4x100 meter victory belonged to Lock
Haven (41.85), while Kutztown took home the 4x400 meter
title in a provisional nationals and meet/stadium record
time of 3:12.15.

CHAMPIONSHIPS CONCLUDES
Millersville
and Slippery Rock Taking Early Lead in Men’s and
Women’s Team Races
(Lock
Haven, Pa.) – After two days of competition at 2003
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Men’s and
Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships,
Millersville University and Slippery Rock University have
taken over the early lead in the men’s and women’s
team races.
The Millersville men’s team has tallied 29
points, followed by Lock Haven University with 21 points.
Shippensburg and Edinboro are tied for third place,
both with 18 points, while defending team champion
Kutztown University is currently in fifth with 12 points.
Indiana (10), Slippery Rock (9), West Chester (6)
and East Stroudsburg (1) round out the team line-up after
day two of competition.
The Millersville men had athletes winning two
events including a repeat champion in the 10,000 meter run
in Mark Stallings (31:10.91) and Brian Good in the long
jump with a stadium-record setting performance of 24’1
½”.
Also in men’s finals action today,
Shippensburg’s Matthew Peters defended his discus title,
posting a mark of 161’11” and surpassing his closest
competitor by over ten feet.
Lock Haven’s Keith Veldhuis earned the decathlon
crown, hitting an NCAA provisional qualifying points total
of 6653 wrapped up with a win in the 1,500 meters
(4:37.28).
The
Slippery Rock women hold the early team lead with 37.16
points, closely followed by defending champion Lock Haven
University with 35 points.
Kutztown is in third place with 24.33 points, while
Shippensburg is fourth with 23 tallies.
Indiana (21.16), Edinboro (14), Clarion (10), West
Chester (8), East Stroudsburg (6.16), Bloomsburg (4) and
Millersville (3.16) all follow in that order.
The Rock women placed athletes in all six events
scored thus far, including a new stadium record in the
shot put of 44’1” by now two-time champion Mackenzie
Gurcak.
Other winners today included Indiana’s Rebecca
Bullard in the heptathlon with 4,829 points including a
win today in the 800 meter run.
Bullard made it two-for-two today, also capturing
the high jump title with a height of 5’6 ¾”.
Lock Haven’s Jocelyn Held collected her third
conference championship in the pole vault, winning by four
inches with a height of 11’0”.
Shippensburg’s Tunisia Lacy set a new stadium
record in the long jump, passing by her competitors by
over a foot in the 19’4 ½” victory.
Red Raider teammate Kelly Stewart defended her
title in the 10,000 meter run this morning, winning in a
time of 38:46.20.
The 2003 PSAC Men’s and Women’s Track and Field
Championships conclude tomorrow.
Field events will begin at 9 a.m., while the first
track event will kick off at 11:05 a.m.

– After the first day of competition in the 2003
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Men’s and
Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Indiana
University’s Rebecca Bullard and Lock Haven
University’s Keith Veldhuis have taken the lead in the
heptathlon and decathlon, respectively.
Bullard is first after four events with 2,967
points including a new championship and stadium record of
5’9 ¾” in the high jump.
Veldhuis has 3,697 points following wins in the 100
meter (11.16) and 400 meter (49.79) sprints along with a
victory in the long jump (23’0”). The heptathlon and
decathlon continue on Friday beginning at 10 a.m.
The running events will open up tomorrow morning at
8 a.m., while the field events begin at 9 a.m.
