Lock Haven Women Second, Men Third at PSAC West Challenge

CLARION, Pa.  – Sophomore high jumper Jim Dempsey (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) leapt an NCAA Provisional Qualifying height, leading eight first place winners for the Lock Haven University track and field squads, as the women finished second and the men third at the PSAC West Challenge hosted by Clarion University yesterday (April 9).

 

Sophomore Maggie Borden (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) made a near-clean sweep of her events, taking first in the 400 meters (58.48), second in the 200 meters and helping the 4x100 relay to a first-place finish (49.35). Joining Borden on the championship relay team were freshman Ashley Hartman (Garrett, Pa./Berlin Brothersvalley), junior Bri Palazzi (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) and sophomore Laura Phillips (York, Pa./Central York).

 

Sophomore Mary Ewanich (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) rounded out the three LHU women’s champions with a 65.58 in the 400-meter hurdles.

 

The women’s team picked up 183 points, just 24 off the pace set by champion Slippery Rock University. The Lady Eagles bumped up a spot from their third-place finish a year ago. The men’s squad earned 134 team points, behind champion Slippery Rock and IUP.

 

Dempsey cleared 6-foot-10 ½ on the bar for the men, earning the first NCAA qualifying mark for either Lock Haven squad this outdoor season. Joining Dempsey in winning their events for the men’s squad were junior William Buckenmeyer (Alexander, N.Y./Alexander Central) in the steeplechase (9:35.15) and senior Michael Brito (Union, N.J./Union) in the 400-meter hurdles at 56.01.

 

Also earning first-place finishes for the Haven were freshman distance specialist Greg Davis (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia) in the 5000 meters at 15:35.45 and classmate Cory J. Spidell (Home, Pa./Marion Center) in the 1500 meters (4:01.94).

 

Dempsey, Borden, Hartman, Palazzi, Phillips, Ewanich, Buckenmeyer, Brito, Davis, Spidell and the rest of the LHU track and field teams are back in action Friday, April 15 at 10 a.m. as they travel to the Bucknell Distance Carnival, hosted by Bucknell University.
