Haven Track & Field Completes Busy Weekend of Competition
Three School Records Fall as LHU Competes at Bucknell and Penn State National Opens

(Lewisburg, Pa./State College, Pa.) - The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania indoor track and field teams had a busy week with both Bald Eagles and Lady Eagles competing at the Bucknell Open along with several individuals racing at the Penn State National Open. Three school records were rewritten over the weekend, as Chris Cowan (Horseheads, N.Y./Thomas A. Edison) broke his own mark in the 3,000 meters, Brooke Rangi (Kawerau, New Zealand/Kawerau College) took over the 60 meter hurdles record and the men’s distance medley relay also clocked a school best time.
The Bald Eagles emerged from the weekend’s action with two new school records, three first-place finishes and four PSAC best performances. Junior Chris Cowan was able to shave just over three seconds off his own record in the 3,000 meters, running a time of 8:34.05 for 11th place at the Penn State Open. His time is the top in the conference thus far, 16 seconds faster than his closest competitor.
Cowan was a part of another school mark, running the lead-off leg of the distance medley relay which placed 10th overall in 10:08.35 at the Penn State Open, five seconds faster than the Haven’s previous 1999 record time. Anesu Mushonga (Harare, Zimbabwe/Prince Edward), Paul Hallman (Langhorne/Neshaminy) and Joe Wiegner (Ivyland/Council Rock) ran the other three portions of the relay, combining with Cowan for the record and the top place on the PSAC performance list.
Three first-place finishes were garnered by Bald Eagles at the Bucknell Open. Keith Veldhuis (Thamesford, ONT/Ingersoll DCI) won the pentathlon with 3,534 points, the most put up by any conference athlete this season. Freshman distance runner Ryan Blood (Summerdale/East Pennsboro) won the 5,000 meters in 15:30.1 at the Bucknell Open, while Aaron Benson (Mt. Jewett/Kane Area) recorded the fastest time so far in the PSAC in the same event at the Penn State National Open with a 15:10.26 for 22nd place. The quartet of Mike Brito (Union, N.J./Union), Tom Skrivanek (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown), Joe Smolenski (Manor/Hempfield Area) and Tim Hite (Altoona/Altoona) also scored a first-place finish, winning the 4x400 meter relay in 3:26.11.
The Lady Eagles saw one school record broken and had several placewinners and conference qualifying marks met over the weekend. Brooke Rangi placed fourth in the pentathlon with 2,994 points, setting a new Haven record in the 60 meter hurdles in the process after clocking a time of 9.19 in the event.
Bri Palazzi (Altoona/Altoona) recorded a distance of 17’6” in the long jump for a third-place finish. The distance medley relay of Jana Kauffman (Strasburg/Lampeter-Strasburg), Mary Ewanich (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall), Katrina Brown (Hatfield/North Penn) and Jodi White (Athens/Athens Area) also registered a third place finish in a time of 13:42.88.
