LHU TRACKSTERS OPEN UP OUTDOOR SEASON AT SUSQUEHANNA INVITE
Magrino Sets Bald Eagle Hammer Throw Record

(Selinsgrove, Pa.) - The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania outdoor men’s and women’s track and field teams fared well in their unveiling at the Susquehanna Invitational hosted by Susquehanna University. A total of nine first-place finishes were collected by Lock Haven, including seven by the Bald Eagles. Senior thrower Julius Magrino (Temple/Meadville) reset his own hammer throw record, bettering last year’s mark by more than five feet.
The men’s team cruised to seven top finishes, including wins in both the 4x100 meter relay and the 4x400 meter relay. Mike Brito (Union, N.J./Union), Tom Skrivanek (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown), Keith Veldhuis (Thamesford, ONT/Ingersoll DCI) and Anesu Mushonga (Harare, Zimbabwe/Prince Edward) eclipsed the field for the win in the 4x100 meter relay in 42.46. Tim Hite (Altoona/Altoona), Jacob Merrill (Kingsley/Montrose), Mike Brito and Tom Skrivanek combined to take the gold in the 4x400 meter relay, cruising across the finish in 3:24.34.
Adding to their relay victories, Mike Brito and Tim Hite were individual winners. Brito captured the win in the 400 meter hurdles in 55.12 and Hite was tops in the 400 meters in a time of 50.16.
Distance standout Chris Cowan (Horseheads, N.Y./Thomas A. Edison) claimed the win in the 5000 meters, taking a 23-second victory with a time of 14:50.91. In the field events, Jim Dempsey (Blue Bell/Wissahickon) cleared 6’4” in the high jump for a first-place finish, while Andy Pollison (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) went 15’0” in the pole vault to take first place.
Julius Magrino’s throw of 155’5” in the hammer was good for second place overall but broke the school record that he already owned in the event by over five feet.
The Lady Eagles also fared well in their first competition outdoors, returning home with a pair of first-place finishers and several PSAC qualifiers. The quartet of Melissa Namey (New Kensington/Burrell), Laura Phillips (York/Central York), Mary Ewanich (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) and Maggie Borden (Hanover/Delone Catholic) won the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:04.40. Three of the relay members were also packed among the top five in the 400 meter dash with Borden finishing second (59.22), Namey placing third (60.88) and Ewanich following in fifth (61.72).
In the throwing events, Lock Haven’s Shelly Levy (Philadelphia/West Philadelphia) captured the win in the shot put, throwing 39’ 3-1/4” for the victory.
The Lock Haven University men’s and women’s track and field teams will next compete at the Liberty Invitational in Lynchburg, Va., on Sat., April 3.
