LHU MEN SECOND, WOMEN FOURTH
AT LIBERTY INVITATIONAL
Two NCAA Qualifying Marks Met, Two School Records Fall
(Lynchburg, Va.) - The Lock Haven
University of Pennsylvania outdoor men’s track and field
team placed second and the women were fourth at the
Liberty Invitational being held in Lynchburg, Va., this
weekend. Two NCAA provisional qualifying marks were met
and a pair of school records fell as the Bald Eagles
claimed six first-place finishes.
The
men’s team was the runner-up in the ten-team field,
posting 149 team points. Liberty University was first with
182 points. The next closest team after the Bald Eagles
was William & Mary in third place with 85 points.
The Haven hammer throw record was broken for the second
straight week, this time by Fieldon Daubert
(Annville/Annville-Cleona), whose best throw was a
record 161’2” to place fourth overall. Daubert also
qualified provisionally for the NCAA meet in the javelin,
placing second with a mark of 196’9”.
Andy Pollison (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central)
also reset a school record and met a provisional nationals
mark, clearing 15’9” in the pole vault for the
first-place finish, the record and a spot on the tentative
list for the trip to the NCAA championships.
A pair of relays cruised to wins, the 4x100 meter relay
(43.73) and the 4x400 meter relay (3:21.98) each earning
top honors. Mike Brito (Union, N.J./Union), Tom
Skrivanek (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown), Tim Hite
(Altoona/Altoona) and Josh Taylor (Greensburg/Hempfield
Area) made up the winning 4x100 meter quartet. Tim
Hite, Jacob Merrill (Kingsley/Montrose), Joe
Smolenski (Manor/Hempfield Area) and Mike Brito
(Union, N.J./Union) captured first place in the 1600
meter relay.
Brito added to his two relay wins with a first-place
finish in the 400 meter hurdles, capturing the victory in
53.92. Also taking first were Chris Cowan (Horseheads,
N.Y./Thomas A. Edison) in the 1500 meters (3:57.05)
and Billy Buckenmeyer (Alexander, N.Y./Alexander
Central) in the 3000 meter steeplechase (9:55.67).
The
Lady Eagle track and field team placed fourth out of a
total of 11 squads with 40 team points. Liberty University
also won the women’s title with 218 points.
Top performers for the Lady Eagles included Ashley
Bartlebaugh’s (Petersburg/Juniata Valley)
second-place finish in the javelin (114’6”). Senior Jana
Kauffman (Strasburg/Lampeter-Strasburg) was third in
the 800 meters (2:24.58) and also placed fourth in the
1500 meter run (4:57.82).
Sara McCleary (Rockton/DuBois) placed fourth in the
high jump after clearing 5’2” and Richelle Reed
(Georgetown/South Side Beaver) was fourth in the
hammer throw with a toss of 136’9”.
The Lady Eagle foursome of Melissa Namey (New
Kensington/Burrell), Mary Ewanich (Cornwall,
N.Y./Cornwall), Laura Phillips (York/Central York),
and Diane Sujansky (Plum/Plum) checked in with a
fourth place finish in the 4x400 meter relay with a final
time of 4:12.07.
The
Lock Haven University men’s and women’s track and
field teams are at Indiana (Pa.) University for a PSAC
Mandated Meet on Sat., April 10.
