Bald Eagles Take Runner-Up Honors at PSAC Track & Field Championships
Lady Eagles Place Ninth Overall

(Slippery Rock, Pa.) - The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania outdoor men’s track and field team took second place at the 2004 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships being held at Slippery Rock University’s N. Kerr Thompson Stadium. The Lady Eagles placed ninth overall in the women’s team race. A total of four Lock Haven athletes claimed top honors in five events.
         Shippensburg University repeated as the men’s team champion, scoring the win with 144 points. Lock Haven followed with 90 points for second place. Slippery Rock (82), Kutztown (73) and Indiana (41) finished third, fourth and fifth.
The Haven’s Chris Cowan (Horseheads, N.Y./Thomas A. Edison) was a double winner, earning both the 5,000 and 10,000 meter crowns. The junior Bald Eagle captured the 10,000 meter title on Friday, winning in 32:01.34. On Saturday, he returned to claim the 5,000 meter medal in 14:54.18.
        Senior Nick Slotterback (Lewisburg/Lewisburg) defended his title in the javelin, winning his second conference crown with his second-to-last throw. His winning mark of 216’5” also meets the NCAA provisional standard.
        In the 400 meter intermediate hurdles, Jacob Merrill (Kingsley/Montrose) ran an NCAA provisional time of 53.28 to take top honors. Merrill also placed fourth in the triple jump (45’2-1/2”) and competed in the long jump (14th; 21’4”).
        The Bald Eagles also had two runner-up finishes including Jim Dempsey (Blue Bell/Wissahickon) in the high jump. The Haven freshman cleared a height of 6’7” in the event to take second.
           The 4x400 meter relay of Tim Hite (Altoona/Altoona) , Mike Brito (Union, N.J./Union), Keith Veldhuis (Thamesford, ONT/Ingersoll DCI) and Anesu Mushonga (Harare, Zimbabwe/Prince Edward) was second, crossing the finish in 3:21.17 for runner-up honors. The quartet also paired up for the 4x100 meter relay, placing third overall in a time of 41.90.
         The Lady Eagles placed ninth overall in the team race. The Slippery Rock University women defended their title, topping the field with 156 points. Shippensburg was second with 93 points followed in third through fifth place by Kutztown (81), East Stroudsburg (76) and Indiana (66.5).
         Making it the fifth year in a row that a Lock Haven runner has captured the 400 meter title, freshman Maggie Borden (Hanover/Delone Catholic) ran an NCAA provisionally qualifying time of 56.46 for the Lady Eagles’ only first-place finish of the meet. Additionally, Borden scored points in the 200 meters, placing fifth in a time of 25.78.
         Joining up with Diane Sujansky (Plum/Plum), Laura Phillips (York/Central York) and Melissa Namey (New Kensington/Burrell), Borden also placed fourth in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 49.20 in the finals. Mary Ewanich (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall), Namey, Sujansky and Borden combined for a fourth-place finish in the 4x400 meter relay, crossing the finish in 3:57.04.
