The Lock
Haven University of Pennsylvania's (LHU) men's and
women's track and field teams
went to two major track and field events over the
weekend, starting at Kutztown University's Golden Bear
Invitational on Friday and traveling to The Penn State
Relays on Saturday.
At Kutztown,
freshman Angela Kramer
(Pottstown, Pa.)
equaled the best vault by
an LHU female as she placed first in the pole vault,
tying a school record
of 11 feet.
Teammate Stephanie
Schieble (Butler, Pa.),
a sophomore, qualified
for the PSAC championships with a fifth place
vault of 9' 6".
Other PSAC
qualifiers include
freshman Kirsten
Schuyler (Williamsport, Pa.)
with a second place
high jump
of 5' 1 3/4".
"I was really pleased
with the solid performances by the
freshman this weekend,"
said head coach Mark Elliston.
"They really showed
that they are serious about making contributions to
this team. I have a feeling we will see even more as
the season progresses."
As the team traveled the
next day to Penn State
University, the
solid performances continued as
the teams competed against a contingent
of mainly Division I schools. The freshmen
continued to turn heads
and perform well. For the women, freshman Ashley
Hartman (Garrett, Pa.)
broke her previously set school record in the 60-meter
dash with a seventh place
time of 7.89 seconds.
"Ashley
is really learning how to sprint well and stay
focused on her form, her times should continue to
drop," Elliston added.
Other freshmen
standouts for the women included Nicole Kulp
(Hatboro, Pa.)
in the triple jump. Her PSAC
qualifying jump of 35' 4.5" placed her
eigth over all. Shot putter Jennifer
Andrews (Chambersburg, Pa.)
placed ninth with her PSAC
qualifying toss of 40' 9.5".
"It
was great to watch with how these
freshmen handled
themselves at such a competitive first meet," said
Elliston. "I know that this will build
their confidence as we compete against schools more
'our size.'"
Other
solid performances came from
upper classmen
senior Brooke Rangi
(Kawerau, New Zealand) in the 60-meter
hurdles (9.37,
12th); senior Bri
Palazzi (Altoona, Pa.) in
the long jump (17'.5",
7th), and triple jump
(9th, 34"8 1/4";
sophomore Laura
Phillips (York, Pa.) with
an 11th place in the 60-meters
(8.20); and
junior Natalie Marsh
(Glendale, Ariz.) in
the 20 weight throw ( 45'
1").
The team came away with record-setting relay
performances. Sophomore Kat
Davey (Springfield, Pa.),
junior Holly Bofinger
(Warminster, Pa.),
and junior Sara
Robertson (Mechanicsburg,
Pa.),
teamed up with freshman Sarah
Rewt (Speonk, N.Y.)
for a school record setting time of 23:36.16 in the
4 X 1600-meter
relay. Also, Hartman,
Phillips,
and Davey, joined
sophomore Mary Ewanich
(Cornwall, N.Y.)
for a record-setting
time of 4:30.17 in the sprint
medley
relay to place ninth
overall.
On the men's side,
the LHU Bald Eagles had
some performances that ranged
from good to record-setting,
highlighted by a distance
medley
relay squad that put up a
national qualifying. Senior Chris
Cowan (Horseheasds, N.Y.),
junior Josh Taylor
(Greensburg, Pa.),
freshman Cory Spidell (Home,
Pa.),
and sophomore Ryan
Blood (Summerdale, Pa.)
passed the baton around the track with
a time of 10:28.76 to place 10th overall.
"We did pretty
good to get the time, but I believe it will take a
better performance to get accepted into
nationals, and I know with
a couple of adjustments and more training, we should
be able to do it," said distance
coach Aaron Russell about
the squad.
Russell watched his
4 X mile relay team of Cowan, Blood, Spidell, and
freshman Shawn Moore (Elverson,
Pa.) place
fourth with a school
record performance of 17:29.44. For the
sprint relays, the
quartette of senior
Mike Brito (Union, N.J.),
junior Tim Hite
(Altoona, Pa.),
sophomore Neal
Flexer (Tamaqua, Pa.)
and sophomore Shawn
Clancy (Hornell, N.Y.)
grabbed a sixth place finish with a time of
1:33.77 in the 4 X 200-meter
relay.
On the
individual side, sophmore
Jim Dempsey (Blue Bell,
Pa.) was third in the
high jump
with a leap of 6' 7".
Shawn Clancy also competed in the 60-meter
hurdles and placed fourth
overall with a personal best time of 8.67. In the
throwers circle, junior
Fieldon Daubert (Annville,
Pa.) came through with
a season best throw of 48' 2.75 " to place
seventh.
This week, the teams
will prepare for Saturday's meet at Bucknell
University.
