Lock Haven DMR Stumbles at NCAA Championships

BOSTON – Who said track and field wasn’t a contact sport? The members of the Lock Haven University track and field men’s distance medley relay found out first-hand tonight (March 11), as on the first exchange, the Bald Eagles collided with a fallen team, knocking LHU out of contention. LHU finished ninth at the NCAA Championships at Roxbury Community College’s Reggie Lewis Center.

“It’s highly disappointing, when you consider how hard these guys worked and what they’re capable of,” said LHU assistant coach Aaron Russell. “It’s hard to see something out of our control wind up dictating the outcome of the race.”

Ryan Blood (Summerdale, Pa./East Pennsboro), Tim Hite (Altoona, Pa./Altoona), Cory J. Spidell (Home, Pa./Marion Center) and Chris Cowan (Horseheads, N.Y./Thomas A. Edison) teamed up for the first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) relay to make the NCAA Indoor Championship. LHU finished in 10:14.32.

The collision resulted in a 10-second deficit behind the rest of the pack. Cowan, running the anchor mile leg, cut the gap, nearing eighth place, but was edged out by 1.5 seconds.
