LHU Men’s 5000 Meters and Women’s Shot Put Dominant at Liberty Invite

   

LYNCHBURG, Va.  – The Lock Haven University track and field squads took half of the top six spots in the women’s shot put and placed six men’s runners in the top-10 of the 5000 meters, en route to an impressive showing at the Liberty University Invitational yesterday (April 2). Sophomore javelin specialist Ashley Bartlebaugh (Petersburg, Pa./Juniata Valley) earned the lone championship for the Lock Haven squads with a 124-foot-8 toss.

The women’s squad earned 17 placewinners, including five top-three finishes. Bartlebaugh led the way, with junior Natalie Marsh (Glendale, Ariz./Glendale C.C.) getting runner-up status in the discuss at 126-feet-6.

The 4x400 relay squad of Mary Ewanich (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall), Diane Sujansky (Plum, Pa./Plum), Ashley Hartman (Garrett, Pa./Berlin Brothersvalley) and Maggie Borden (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) nabbed a runner-up finish of their own, finishing in 4:15.57. Borden also added a third-place result in the 400 meters to her resume.

Leading the trio of Lady Eagles in the shot put was junior Shelly Levy (Philadelphia/West Philadelphia) at third place. She was joined by Freshman Jen Andrews (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) and sophomore Ginger Williams (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) in fourth and sixth, respectively.

The men’s team had 11 placewinners, led by their dominant finish in the 5000 meters. Senior Chris Cowan (Horseheads, N.Y./Thomas A. Edison) took second in 15:05.33, with sophomore Ryan Blood (Summerdale, Pa./East Pennsboro) following at 15:06.64. Classmate Aaron Benson (Mt. Jewett, Pa./Kane Area) rounded out the placewinners in the event for LHU at fifth.

Junior Chris Long (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) was just that, earning the other Bald Eagle runner-up spot in the javelin with a 185-foot-9 heave. Junior Fieldon Daubert (Annville, Pa./Annville-Cleonia) completed LHU’s 2-3 finish in the field event.

Also earning third-place finishes were freshmen Frankie Graham, Jr. (Reading, Pa./Reading) in the high jump and Cory J. Spidell (Home, Pa./Marion Center) in the 800 meters. Graham topped at least six Division I leapers.

Bartlebaugh, Marsh, Ewanich, Sujansky, Hartman, Borden, Levy, Andrews, Williams, Cowan, Blood, Benson, Long, Daubert, Graham, Spidell and the rest of the LHU track and field teams will be back in action Saturday, April 9 at Clarion University for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Challenge.
