Williams, Levy Make Most Out of ‘Last Chance’ as LHU Splits to Two Events

LOCK HAVEN AND STATE COLLEGE, Pa.  – The Lock Haven University track and field teams saved their best for last, snapping two school records and meeting six NCAA Provisional-Qualifying marks in the final weekend of the regular season. Sophomore thrower Ginger Williams (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) was the weekend’s standout, destroying a 16-year old LHU record en route to an NCAA-qualifying and Hubert Jack Stadium record in the discus.

Today (May 8) at the LHU Last Chance Qualifier, Williams bested the school mark by an amazing 9-feet-6, spinning the disc an event-winning 147-feet. Fellow throws-specialist Shelly Levy (Philadelphia/West Philadelphia) smashed a 26-year old school mark in the shot put with a 44-foot-4 first-place toss, also meeting the NCAA Provisional standard.

Completing the trio of Lady Eagle national qualifiers was freshman Nicole Kulp (Hatboro, Pa./William Tennent), winning the long jump in 19-feet-1 ½. Other event-winners at the LHU Qualifier were Ashley Bartlebaugh (Petersburg, Pa./Juniata Valley) in the javelin, Maggie Borden (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) in the 400 meters, Angela Kramer (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) in the pole vault, Sarah McCleary (Rockton, Pa./DuBois) in the high jump, Brittany Turner (Wilmington, Del./John Dickinson) in the 800 meters and both the 4x400 and 4x100 relay squads.

Yesterday (May 7), the Lady Eagles competed at the Penn State Open, hosted by Penn State University, bringing home a trio of third-place finishes. Williams took third in the disc at 132-feet-4, while Jen Andrews (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) and Richelle Reed (Georgetown, Pa./South Side) finished third in the shot put and hammer throw, respectively.

The men’s side sent just two student-athletes to State College, Pa., but brought home a pair of NCAA Provisional marks. Juniors Fieldon Daubert (Annville, Pa./Annville-Cleonia) (199-feet-2) and Chris Long (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) (195-feet-3) both hit for national marks in the javelin, Daubert edging Long for third place.

At the LHU Qualifier, the Bald Eagles garnered three more wins, with Daubert meeting the NCAA mark for the second-consecutive day. Junior William Buckenmeyer (Alexander, N.Y./Alexander Central) won the steeplechase, while sophomore Jim Dempsey (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) took first in the high jump and senior Joe Wiegner (Ivyland, Pa./James Madison University) won the 800 meters.

Qualifying members of the LHU track and field teams will compete in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships Thursday, May 12, hosted by Mansfield University.
