LEWISBURG, Pa.
– Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania’s men’s and
women’s track teams dusted off the spikes for the Bison
Opener at Bucknell University on Saturday, beginning the
2004-2005 indoor season.
At the
meet, LHUP mixed it up with athletes from Bucknell
University, Morgan State University, Shippensburg
University, St. Francis University, Georgetown
University, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, James
Madison University, Kutztown University and Dickinson
College.
Head
coach Mark Elliston was pleased with LHUP’s
performance.
“It was a
good start,” Elliston said, who viewed the meet as a
place for his athletes to start their work coming off of
the off-season
Elliston
said the meet was mostly a working practice.
Some athletes were unable to attend because of
involvement in other sports, he said.
But that
doesn’t mean the men’s and women’s track teams didn’t
take the meet seriously. There were a number of place
winners and PSAC qualifiers.
For the
women, one school record would fall. Ashley Hartman
would break the 60 meter record with a time of 8.07
seconds. Though Hartman placed seventh, the field
consisted of runners from mostly Division I schools.
Also,
Bri Palazzi
placed 6th in the long jump, with a leap of
17 feet, 6-1/4 inches. Palazzi was the only place
winner for the women.
For the men,
Jim Dempsey took first in the high jump, clearing 6
feet, 7 inches. Joining Dempsey were 10 other place
winners, including Joe Wiegner, who picked up
second places in both the mile, with a time of 4:19.10,
and the 1000 meters, with a time of 2:33.61.
