BALD EAGLE TRACK & FIELD WINS THIRD-STRAIGHT PSAC TITLE
Cowan Named Men's MVP; Lady Eagles Place Seventh at Conference Meet
FULL LHU RESULTS

(East Stroudsburg, Pa.) - The Bald Eagle track and field team made it three-in-a-row as it barreled through the two-day 2004 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships to claim the team title and continue its steak as the only men’s team champion in conference championship history. Haven junior Chris Cowan (Horseheads, N.Y./Thomas A. Edison) was selected the Men’s Most Outstanding Track Athlete and the Championships MVP . The Lady Eagles placed seventh overall in the 12-team field, totaling 21 points.
     Three Bald Eagles and two relays claimed first-place finishes to help the squad to a 46.5 point victory with a conference meet record of 150 total points. Shippensburg University was the runner-up with 103.5 points and Kutztown University followed in third place with 88 points.
     Championship MVP Chris Cowan won the 3000 meters in a fieldhouse record of 8:35.50, and also placed second in the mile run in 4:17.59. The standout Bald Eagle ran the third leg of the winning 4x800 meter relay and also helped out on the second-place distance medley relay which broke a school record with its final time.
       Freshman Aaron Benson (Mt. Jewett/Kane Area) set a championship meet record with his win in the 5000 meters, posting a time of 15:05.32.
     Senior Andy Pollison (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) followed up his win during the 2003 outdoor season with his first indoor title, winning the event with a height of 15’3”.
     The men’s 4x800 meter relay also captured gold, as Joe Smolenski (Manor/Hempfield Area), Joe Wiegner (Ivyland/Council Rock), Chris Cowan and Paul Hallman (Langhorne/Neshaminy) set a meet and fieldhouse record with their winning time of 7:50.11.
     The 4x400 meter relay of Tim Hite (Altoona/Altoona), Tom Skrivanek (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown), Mike Brito (Union, N.J./Union) and Anesu Mushonga (Harare, Zimbabwe/Prince Edward) capped off the meet’s performance with a decisive victory in the final event, earning the conference hardware in a time of 3:21.11.
     The Bald Eagle distance medley relay consisting of Ryan Blood (Summerdale/East Pennsboro), Joe Wiegner, Paul Hallman and Chris Cowan finished as the runner-up by less than one second, and their time of 10:07.51 breaks the Haven’s four-year old school record in the event.
     Junior Julius Magrino (Temple/Meadville) rewrote his own school record in the 35-pound weight throw, finishing second with a distance of 50’6”. Senior Jacob Merrill (Kingsley/Montrose) logged an NCAA provisionally qualifying mark of 47’2-3/4” in the triple jump, good enough to place the Bald Eagle senior second overall.
     In the women’s competition, the Lady Eagles placed seventh out of the 12 team field with 21 points. Kutztown University won the team title with 124 points followed by Shippensburg University in second place with 97.5 points.
     Haven junior Brooke Rangi (Kawerau, New Zealand/Kawerau College) placed second in the pentathlon with 3,192 points. Maggie Borden (Hanover/Delone Catholic) was third overall in the 400 meter dash with a time of 59.53, and also anchored the fourth-place 4x400 meter relay. Melissa Namey (New Kensington/Burrell), Mary Ewanich (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall), Laura Phillips (York/Central York) and Borden recorded a time of 4:01.27 to take fourth.
     Lock Haven’s Jana Kauffman (Strasburg/Lampeter-Strasburg) was fifth in the mile run, finishing in 5:17.71. Jessie Williams (Northumberland/Shikellamy) led LHU in the throwing events, placing sixth in the 20-pound weight throw with a mark of 45’7”.

HAVEN TRACK & FIELD HAS STRONG SHOWING AT 
KENT STATE TUNE-UP, DENEAULT INVITATIONAL

(Kent, Ohio/Ithaca, N.Y.) - The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania indoor track and field teams saw three more school records fall in competition this weekend at both Marc Deneault Invitational hosted by Cornell University and the Kent State Tune-Up in Kent, Ohio.
        Two Bald Eagle indoor records were rewritten over the weekend at the Kent State Tune-Up. Freshman Ryan Blood (Summerdale/East Pennsboro) broke the school’s 3000 meter record by five seconds, placing fourth overall in 8:32.50. Blood’s time also ranks him at the top of the PSAC performance list in the event. Mike Brito (Union, N.J./Union) captured first place in the 300 meter hurdles, bettering his old record time with a faster pace of 39.37.
       The Lock Haven men’s team had several other placewinners at Kent State and the Deneault Invite. At the Deneault Invite, Jim Dempsey (Blue Bell/Wissahickon) cleared the bar at 6’7” for the second straight week to take top honors in the high jump. Jacob Merrill (Kingsley/Montrose) was second in the triple jump (46’ 1-1/4”) and third in the long jump (21’7-1/4”). Brian Lennex (Holtwood/Penn Manor) placed fourth in the triple jump (42’11”) and fifth in the long jump (21’ 0-1/2”). Shawn Clancy (Hornell, N.Y./Hornell) checked in with a sixth-place finish in the long jump (20’10”).
       At Kent State, the 4x400 meter relay of Keith Veldhuis (Thamesford, ONT/Ingersoll DCI), Tom Skrivanek (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown), Mike Brito and Anesu Mushonga (Harare, Zimbabwe/Prince Edward) recorded the fastest time in the PSAC this season, placing second overall in 3:19.40. Mushonga also placed sixth in the 200 meter dash in a time of 22.34.
      Paul Hallman (Langhorne/Neshaminy) and Chris Cowan (Horseheads, N.Y./Thomas A. Edison) teamed up to take fourth and fifth in the 800 meter run at Kent State, posting the top two fastest times in the PSAC in the event in 1:55.32 and 1:55.39.
      The Lady Eagles had one school record set and a pair of placewinners and several conference qualifying marks met over the weekend. Mary Ewanich (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) entered the Haven record books in the 300 meter hurdles, crossing the finish in 48.76, good enough for ninth place overall. At the Deneault Invitational, Sara McCleary (Rockton/DuBois) was fourth in the high jump after logging a height of 5’3”. At Kent State, the women’s 4x400 meter relay of Melissa Namey (New Kensington/Burrell), Laura Phillips (York/Central York), Mary Ewanich (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) and Maggie Borden (Hanover/Delone Catholic) was fourth in a time of 4:06.32.
     The Lock Haven University men’s and women’s track and field teams will defend their titles at the 2004 PSAC Indoor Track & Field Championships being hosted at East Stroudsburg University from Feb. 28-29.

BALD EAGLES WIN PSAC WEST CHALLENGE; 
LADY EAGLE TAKE THIRD

(Slippery Rock, Pa.) - The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania indoor track and field teams competed at the PSAC West Challenge hosted by Slippery Rock University, the Bald Eagles finishing first in the team standings while the Lady Eagles wrapped up in third place. Six first-place finishes were recorded over the course of the day.
         The men’s team won the challenge with a total of 213.5 points. Slippery Rock, the home team, came in second with 167 points followed in third by Indiana (Pa.) University with 159.5 points. Clarion University (54) and California (Pa.) University (21) were fourth and fifth.
         The Bald Eagles posted five first-place finishes overall. Lock Haven took the top two spots in the 55 meter dash, Anesu Mushonga (Harare, Zimbabwe/Prince Edward) winning in 6.67 and Rob Carey (N. Braddock/Woodland Hills) finishing second in 6.70. LHU also went one-two in the 500 meters, Tim Hite (Altoona/Altoona) capturing top honors in 1:10.35 while Tom Skrivanek (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown) was second in 1:10.69.
         Lock Haven took three of the top five slots in the 1000 meter run with Paul Hallman (Langhorne/Neshaminy) winning the event in 2:36.97. Joe Wiegner (Ivyland/Council Rock) was second in 2:37.60 while Doug Spatafore (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) was fifth in 2:43.94.
         Jim Dempsey (Blue Bell/Wissahickon) picked up his second-straight win in the high jump after clearing the bar at 6’7”.
        The 4x400 meter relay of Keith Veldhuis (Thamesford, ONT/Ingersoll DCI), Tim Hite, Mike Brito (Union, N.J./Union) and Tom Skrivanek out-ran the competition, placing first in 3:30.30.
         The Lady Eagle squad posted 106 points to finish in third place overall. Slippery Rock University won the meet with 239 points followed by Indiana (Pa.) University in second with 151 points. Edinboro University (66.5), Clarion University (61.5) and California (Pa.) University (1) followed in fourth through sixth place.
         Lock Haven’s Richelle Reed (Georgetown/South Side) captured a win in the weight throw, earning top honors with a heave of 43’6”. Reed also placed sixth in the shot put with a distance of 38’1-1/2”.
         Three other Lady Eagles recorded runner-up finishes. Bri Palazzi (Altoona/Altoona) was second in the triple jump, going 36’9”. Palazzi was also fifth in the 55 meter dash in 7.80 seconds. Freshman Maggie Borden (Hanover/Delone Catholic) placed second in the 400 meters in 1:01.52. Shelly Levy (Philadelphia/West Philadelphia) was second to Reed in the weight throw (41’5”) and also picked up third place in the shot put with a throw of 39’10-1/2”.
         The Lock Haven track and field teams will split up on Sat., Feb. 21, part of the team traveling to Cornell University for the Denault Invitational while the others will compete at the Kent State Tune-Up at Kent University.

NEW BALANCE ARMORY COLLEGIATE INVITATIONAL
Cowan Sets School Record, Provisionally Qualifies For NCAA Championships

(New York, N.Y.) - The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania indoor track and field team sent a handful of Bald Eagle runners to the New Balance Armory Collegiate Invitational at the Armory Track & Field Center in New York, N.Y., emerging from the first day of action with several impressive results.
        Junior Chris Cowan (Horseheads, N.Y./Thomas A. Edison) placed third in the University Division 5000 Meter run in a school-record setting time of 14:40.05. His time, which broke his own 2002 record by almost 17 seconds, meets the NCAA provisional qualifying standards and is also the fastest time in the event posted by any Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) runner.
        Four other distance runners had a big showing, placing in the top 21 in the 3000 meter run. Freshman Ryan Blood (Summerdale/East Pennsboro) and sophomore Billy Buckenmeyer (Alexander, N.Y./Alexander Central) placed 15th and 16th, Blood finishing in 8:39.82 while Buckenmeyer followed in 8:42.51. Chris Robson (Lewisberry/Red Land) was 20th in 8:51.27 and Aaron Benson (Mt. Jewett/Kane Area) was 21st in 8:52.76.
       Senior Anesu Mushonga (Harare, Zimbabwe/Prince Edward) would record the fastest 200 meter time in the conference after crossing the finish in 22.33, while sophomore Tim Hite (Altoona/Altoona) was right behind in 23.12. The place finish for both was not available.
       In the 400 meter dash, Mushonga was 24th overall with a time of 49.81 and Hite placed 30th in 50.13.
      The Haven’s Joe Wiegner (Ivyland/Council Rock) was 20th in the mile run, placing in a season best time of 4:20.97. His time is currently the second fastest in the conference.
       The Bald Eagle and Lady Eagle track and field teams will next be at a PSAC Mandated Meet on Sun., Feb. 15, at Slippery Rock University.

Two School Records Fall as LHU Track & Field

Pair of School Records Shattered, Dempsey Posts NCAA Qualifying Mark in High Jump

(East Stroudsburg, Pa.) - The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania indoor track and field teams had a big day at the 5th Annual DeSchriver Invitational hosted by East Stroudsburg University. The Bald and Lady Eagle squads combined for 33 placewinners including eight first-place finishes.
        Two school records were broken and one meet record was tied. Freshman Jim Dempsey (Blue Bell/Wissahickon) set a new school mark and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II championships with a winning clearance of 6’10-1/4” in the high jump. The previous record of 6’8-1/2” had lasted for ten years, tied only once in 1997.
        The
