LHU Volleyball In PSAC Championship Match After 3-1 Semifinal Win Over Kutztown

(Kutztown, Pa.) -  The Lock Haven University volleyball team (28-5) has earned the chance to play for its fourth Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) title, advancing to the conference championship match with this evening’s 3-1 (30-19, 31-33, 30-17, 30-16) victory over Kutztown University (21-9) in the tournament semifinals.  The Lady Eagles posted three players with kills in double figures and tallied 10 total blocks en route to the four-game win.
Lock Haven took the first game, 30-19, to take the early lead.  Off-target attacks and reception errors plagued game two, as the Lady Eagles hit at just a .125 clip and fell by a slim 33-31 margin.  The Haven rolled out two quicker games in the third and fourth sets, coming back strong in the third to register 20 kills in a 30-17 win before taking the 30-16 victory along with the match in the fourth.
Junior outside hitter Kristi Kauffman (York/Central York) powered the offense, generating 21 kills and 19 digs.  Freshman middle Cherry Li (Shanghai, China) had 14 kills, 19 digs and four blocks, while junior middle Lillian Bortoto (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Campos Salles) posted 13 kills and five blocks.
Michelle Deehan (Upper Marlboro, Md./Gwynn Park) totaled 18 digs along with seven kills, while libero Kelly Wengerter (Emerson, N.J./Emerson) had 14 digs.  Sophomore setter Kelly Kostelich (Venetia/Peters Township) registered 34 assists along with 12 digs and six service aces.
Lock Haven will face Edinboro University (25-10), the Western Division top seed, in the PSAC Tournament finals after the Fighting Scots rolled to a 3-0 (30-24, 30-26, 30-16) semifinal win over West Chester University
earlier this evening.  The championship match is slated for a 5 p.m. start on Sat., Nov. 15, in Kutztown’s Keystone Hall.
