LOCK HAVEN, Pa. –
At 6-foot-4, Lock
Haven University
volleyball’s (19-3, 4-2 PSAC West) Lilian Bortoto
(Sao Paulo,
Brazil/Campos Salles) is
tall. After tonight’s 3-1 victory over Clarion University
(20-5, 3-3 PSAC West), Bartoto stands tall atop the school
record books.
The senior middle-hitter
recorded 14 total blocks, three better than Natalie
Jackson (1992-95), a record that has stood since Oct.
15, 1994. Bartoto’s 13 block-assists is also a school
record.
The Lady Eagles jumped out
to a 6-1 lead and didn’t look back, trailing just once in
the first two sets, taking them both 30-17 and 30-26. In
the second set, LHU lost the killer instinct, having a
chance to end the match at 29-28. The Golden Eagles took
their opening and grabbed a 32-30 win. In set number four,
the Haven regained their attack and blocking skill,
finishing off Clarion 30-24.
“When we jump out to an
early lead like that, we have a tendancy to get
complacent,” head coach Tom Justice said. “Our
players turned it on when we needed it most to get the
win.”
Leading the way for the
Haven in kills once again was Li Yizhi (Shanghai,
China) with 18 on a
spectacular .607 hitting clip. Li also added a team-best
13 digs and eight blocks of her own.
The team’s 23 blocks also
set a school record.
Bartoto, Justice, Li and
the rest of the Lady Eagles are back in action Tuesday,
Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. at Slippery Rock University. |
