BIG RAPIDS, Mich. –
Despite starting the day with a four-set losing streak, the
No. 24 Lock Haven University volleyball team (2-2) rebounded to take three
sets from Lake Superior State University, earning a split in today’s action
(Aug. 27) and the tournament in general.
In the first game today, the Lady Eagles
fell to No. 14 Grand Valley State University (3-1) 30-20, 30-14, 30-28.
“We didn’t really start to play until
that third set,” said LHU head coach Tom Justice. “We didn’t come out
ready to play and just performed poorly.”
Junior
Li YiZhi (Shanghai, China)
led all Haven scorers with 13 kills, hitting an amazing .545. She completed
her double-double effort with a team-best 16 digs. Splitting time at setter
were seniors Allison Furry
(Guys Mills, Pa./Maplewood) and
Kelly Kostelich (Venetia,
Pa./Peters Township). Furry got the upper hand with 16 assists to
Kostelich’s 14. Freshman Stacey
Borgia (Factoryville, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) paced the defense with
five total blocks, while junior
Maggie Borden (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) lent a hand with 12
digs.
In the second match, the Lady Eagles
dropped the first set 30-22 before sweeping the final three sets 30-24,
34-32, 30-18.
Li added another double-double with 20
kills and 12 digs, both team-highs. Sophomore
Inga Kurgonaite (Kaunas,
Lithuania/Yuozas Urbsys) recorded 17 kills on .316 hitting. Freshman
Mayumi Ishihara (Hamamatshu
City, Japan/Coffeeville CC) made her presence felt with 11 digs.
Justice, Li, Furry, Kostelich, Borgia,
Borden, Kurgonaite, Ishihara and the rest of the Lady Eagles travel to the
Colorado Premier Challenge, Friday, Sept. 7 at noon against No. 7 Central
Missouri State University.
