DENVER
– The Lock Haven University Lady Eagle volleyball
team (3-3) continued its tough early-season schedule, competing in the 2005
Colorado Premier Challenge, co-hosted by Regis University and Metropolitan
State College of Denver today (Sept. 2). The Challenge featured six ranked
teams, including the #24 Lady Eagles, as well as four of the top nine squads
in the nation.
In the afternoon clip, LHU was dropped
in straight sets by No. 7 Central Missouri State University (24-30, 28-30,
28-30). The Jennies (3-1) out hit the Lady Eagles, pounding out an
impressive attack percentage of .311 to LHU’s .223.
Junior
Li YiZhi (Shanghai, China)
posted her fifth double-double in as many games with 12 digs, 14 kills out
of 19 attempts for a tremendous .684 hitting percentage. Sophomore
Inga Kurgonaite (Kaunas,
Lithuania/Yuozas Urbsys) added 18 kills in the losing effort.
Setting up the Lady Eagles were senior
setters Allison Furry (Guys
Mills, Pa./Maplewood) and
Kelly Kostelich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) with 25 and 11
assists, respectively.
Head coach
Tom Justice rallied his troops
together as Lock Haven earned a 1-1 split on the day after rebounding with a
straight set victory over No. 21 Augustana College (30-28, 30-22, 30-26).
The loss was the first blemish on the Vikings (4-1) early season record.
Li once again led the way for the Haven,
notching 12 digs, nine kills, three assists and three service aces. Senior
Michelle Deehan (Upper
Marlboro, Md./Gwynn Park) posted a team-high 14 digs in the win. Furry
dished out 18 assists while Kostelich handed out 13.
Li, Kugonaite,
Furry, Kostelich, Deehan and the rest of the Lady Eagles continue tournament
pool play Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005 at noon against the
defending national champions from Barry University. LHU is guaranteed two games on the
Premier Challenge’s final day.
