Volleyball Earns Another Split Against Top-Notch Opponents

DENVER – The Lock Haven University Lady Eagle volleyball team (3-3) continued its tough early-season schedule, competing in the 2005 Colorado Premier Challenge, co-hosted by Regis University and Metropolitan State College of Denver today (Sept. 2).  The Challenge featured six ranked teams, including the #24 Lady Eagles, as well as four of the top nine squads in the nation.

In the afternoon clip, LHU was dropped in straight sets by No. 7 Central Missouri State University (24-30, 28-30, 28-30).  The Jennies (3-1) out hit the Lady Eagles, pounding out an impressive attack percentage of .311 to LHU’s .223.

Junior Li YiZhi (Shanghai, China) posted her fifth double-double in as many games with 12 digs, 14 kills out of 19 attempts for a tremendous .684 hitting percentage.  Sophomore Inga Kurgonaite (Kaunas, Lithuania/Yuozas Urbsys) added 18 kills in the losing effort.

Setting up the Lady Eagles were senior setters Allison Furry (Guys Mills, Pa./Maplewood) and Kelly Kostelich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) with 25 and 11 assists, respectively.

Head coach Tom Justice rallied his troops together as Lock Haven earned a 1-1 split on the day after rebounding with a straight set victory over No. 21 Augustana College (30-28, 30-22, 30-26).  The loss was the first blemish on the Vikings (4-1) early season record.

Li once again led the way for the Haven, notching 12 digs, nine kills, three assists and three service aces.  Senior Michelle Deehan (Upper Marlboro, Md./Gwynn Park) posted a team-high 14 digs in the win.  Furry dished out 18 assists while Kostelich handed out 13.

Li, Kugonaite, Furry, Kostelich, Deehan and the rest of the Lady Eagles continue tournament pool play Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005 at noon against the defending national champions from Barry University.  LHU is guaranteed two games on the Premier Challenge’s final day.
