            PSAC VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP THRILLER

(Lock Haven, Pa.) – The Edinboro University of Pennsylvania Fighting Scot volleyball team captured its ninth Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crown with this evening’s come-from-behind victory over two-time defending conference champion Lock Haven University, 3-2 (28-30, 24-30, 32-30, 30-21, 16-14).  Edinboro’s Stephanie Burner (Pittsburgh/Upper St. Clair), a junior outside hitter, was selected as the tournament MVP. Edinboro improves to 19-12 overall, while Lock Haven is now 26-12 on the season.
            Lock Haven stormed into the match with two straight wins, battling through seven ties and five lead changes in the first for the 30-28 victory.  Edinboro led early in the second game but the Lady Eagles bounced back from the early deficit, tying the score at 5-5 before jumping out to leads as much as seven points (29-22) before the eventual 30-24 win.
            The momentum went back and forth in game three, with Edinboro earning a six-point lead at 15-9 before Lock Haven answered with a run of its own, edging ahead, 21-20.  After a tie game at 24-24, teams traded points with neither gaining the two-point minimum for the victory. Two Edinboro kills closed the deal, however, coming on points 31 and 32 for the 32-30 win. The Fighting Scots kept the momentum going in the fourth game, leading by as much as 10 points (28-18) en route to the 30-21 game victory.  
            Into the fifth and deciding game, Edinboro came out with a 3-0 run.  Lock Haven returned the favor, climbing back into contention at 4-4.  Again trading points and short-lived leads, the two teams fought to a 14-14 tie.  A kill by Ashley Walton (Mt. Wolf/Northeastern) brought Edinboro to match-point, 15-14, and Jen Shaw (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) sealed the victory with a kill for the win, 16-14.
            Edinboro had four players record more than 14 kills paced by 18 successful attacks from Walton and 17 from Shaw.  PSAC Championship MVP Stephanie Burner tallied a team-best 29 digs along with eight kills and two service aces.  Rookie setter Renee Kam (Eden, N.Y./Eden) added 61 assists and 23 digs in the victory.
            Lock Haven’s Lauren Nuzum (Manchester/Northeastern) led the way with 19 kills and 14 digs.  Middle Kara Warnke (Aurora, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) added 14 kills along with a game-high seven blocks.  Leading the Lady Eagle in digs were Shana Fessette (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown Central) and Kelli Crouch (Lancaster/Conestoga Valley), both with 18 on the evening.

(11/9) Lock Haven, Edinboro Advance to PSAC Championship Match

 (Lock Haven, Pa.) – Lock Haven University and Edinboro University both captured semifinal wins in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Volleyball Championships action this evening to advance to the title match.  Lock Haven (26-11), the Western Division’s top seed, swept Millersville University (12-15) in three games (30-15, 30-17, 30-18).  Edinboro (18-12), the second seed from the Western Division, earns the championship berth with a 3-0 (30-21, 30-25, 30-26) victory over Eastern Division top seed East Stroudsburg University (18-10). 
            This will be the sixth straight PSAC championship dual between the Lady Eagles of Lock Haven and the Fighting Scots of Edinboro.  Lock Haven currently leads the title series, 3-2, including the past two.  Overall, Edinboro has won eight conference crowns, while Lock Haven owns three titles.
           Lock Haven, the two-time defending PSAC champion, will look to garner its third straight championship crown while Edinboro will look to even the series in the finals tomorrow, Saturday, November 10, at 5:30 p.m. in LHU’s Thomas Field House.

  Semifinal Match #1: (W2) Edinboro 3, (E1) East Stroudsburg 0  (30-21, 30-25, 30-26)

            The Fighting Scots captured the three-game sweep in the semifinals to earn their 14th consecutive championship match appearance. Edinboro built a quick 5-1 lead in game one and steadily added onto the advantage to grab the 30-21 victory.  The Fighting Scots held a small lead in game two, but East Stroudsburg fought back to take over control after a 13-13 tie.  The Warriors build a 17-15 lead, but EUP regained its composure to make up the difference then cruised ahead after the fourth tie of the game at 21-21, winning 30-25.  Game three was even closer, with nine ties and eight lead changes culminating in the eventual 30-26 win for the Fighting Scots.  
            Ashley Walton (Mt. Wolf/Northeastern) paced the EUP attack with 19 kills, hitting at a .548 clip.  Katie Hummel (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) added 13 kills, while Stephanie Burner (Pittsburgh/Upper St. Clair) had 10 kills and a team-best 12 digs.  Freshman setter Renee Kam (Eden, N.Y./Eden) posted 44 assists along with nine digs and three kills in the win.  
            Leading East Stroudsburg was Andrea Myers (Mt. Wolf/Northeastern) with 10 kills along with 11 digs.  April Mellott (Dover/Spring Grove) added six kills and 13 digs, while Heidi Johnston (Mercersburg/James Buchanan) paced the squad with 18 digs along with 23 assists.

 Semifinal Match #2: (W1) Lock Haven 3, (E2) Millersville 0 (30-15, 30-17, 30-18)

            The Lady Eagles of Lock Haven also swept their semifinal opponent, Millersville University, in three straight games to make their sixth consecutive trip to the PSAC championship match.
            Lock Haven capitalized on a strong hitting performance and Millersville errors to roll to the 30-15 victory in game one. Game two echoed the first game’s results, as the Haven’s attack continued to dominate and the Marauders suffered from several unforced errors leading to the Haven’s 30-17 win. The Lady Eagles opened the third and final game with an eight-point run, fending off a number of Millersville surges before closing off the match with two straight kills by Kelli Crouch (Lancaster/Conestoga Valley) to capture the 30-18 victory.
            LHU’s Kara Warnke (Aurora, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) and Lauren Nuzum (Manchester/Northeastern) paced the attack, with Warnke pocketing a team-best 13 kills along with six digs.  Nuzum added 10 kills and seven digs.  Opposite hitter Kelli Crouch totaled six kills and a team-high 10 digs and three service aces.
            Leading Millersville was Becky Ressler (Lancaster/Manheim Township), who recorded seven kills and five digs.  Annie Beck (York/Dallastown) added four kills and a team-best 10 digs.
