LOCK HAVEN, Pa.—After
many near-misses, the Lock Haven University women’s
basketball team (1-12) cracked the win column tonight with
a 70-57 victory over Mansfield University (5-7) at the
Thomas Fieldhouse. Sophomore forward
Shameka L. Lee
(Washington/HD Woods) posted the team’s first
double-double of the season with 12 points and an LHU
season-high 12 rebounds.
Allison Hall
(Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg)
had 19 points, the second-most by a Lady Eagle this
season, to go with nine rebounds. The sophomore guard was
13-of-15 from the free-throw line. Classmate
Candace
Sillers (Lebanon,
Pa./Lebanon)
played the entire 40 minutes, hitting for a season-high 15
points and seven boards.
After a competitive early
going, the Lady Eagles took the lead for good at the 16:02
mark of the first half, on a long-distance shot by Sillers,
beginning a 12-4 LHU run.
The Lady Eagles were hot
shooters in the first half, hitting 100 percent (2-of-2)
from long range, 50 percent (12-of-24) overall from the
floor and 88 percent (14-of-16) from the charity stripe.
LHU continued their strong
play in the second half, topping the Mountaineers 30-25.
Lee capped the Haven’s largest lead at 13 with a layup
just four minutes in.
The Lady Eagles controlled
the boards 52-39, as Lee and
Ginger
Williams (Pasadena,
Md./Chesapeake)
led the way with 12 apiece. Sophomore point-guard
Elizabeth
Gabrielle (State
College, Pa./State College)
had seven assists, another
LHU season high.
Lee, Hall, Sillers,
Williams, Gabrielle and the rest of the Lady Eagles are
back in action Wednesday, Jan. 12 at 6 p.m. as they begin
their conference schedule by hosting Indiana University (Pa.). |
