LOCK HAVEN, Pa.—Being
down to eight players didn’t seem to bother the Lock Haven
University women’s basketball team (2-12, 1-0 PSAC West)
as it earned a come-from-behind 61-52 victory over IUP
(7-7, 0-1 PSAC West) in both teams’ first conference game
tonight at Thomas Fieldhouse.
Down 26-19 at the half and
trailing by as many as 12, the Lady Eagles turned up the
offensive attack in the second half, shooting 44 percent
from the field (11-of-25) and getting to the free-throw
line 23 times, en route to the upending victory.
Playing without senior
captain
Melissa Picarsic (Acme,
Pa./Mt. Pleasant),
the remaining eight Lady Eagles each contributed to
scoring by either point or assist. Sophomore forward
Ginger
Williams (Pasadena,
Md./Chesapeake)
posted the first double-double of her career with 11
points and 13 rebounds.
The Lady Eagles started a
15-4 run with 10:19 left in the game, five of which came
from the hands of the game’s high-scorer,
Elizabeth
Gabrielle (State College, Pa./State College), who
finished with 18, the fourth-highest point total for the
Lady Eagles this season.
Sophomore guard
Candace
Sillers (Lebanon,
Pa./Lebanon)
reached double figures for the second-straight game, tying
the career-mark of 15 points she set against Mansfield
University on Sunday. While replacing Picarsic wasn’t
easy, junior forward
Kristy
Shadduck (Dimmock,
Pa./Elk Lake)
put together a key nine-point six-rebound performance in a
reserve role.
Picarsic, Williams,
Gabrielle, Sillers, Shadduck and the rest of the Lady
Eagles are back in action Sunday, Jan. 16 at 1 p.m. as
they travel to Bloomsburg University. |
