LOCK HAVEN, Pa. –
The Lock Haven
University women’s basketball team (0-2) nearly escaped
with their first win of the season tonight, but a 13-0
Virginia Union University (1-1) run with 6:43 left in
the game would prove to be too much for the Lady Eagles,
as they fell 66-52 at the Thomas Field House. Sophomore
guard Allison Hall (Hollidaysburg,
Pa./Hollidaysburg)
fired for a career-high 21 points.
Hall was joined in
double-figures by fellow sophomore guard Elizabeth
Gabrielle (State
College, Pa./State College)
who rebounded from a shutout at Le Moyne College in the
first game of the season to hit two three-pointers and
score 10 points. Sophomore Shameka L. Lee
(Washington/HD Woodson) narrowly missed LHU’s first
double-double of the season, posting eight points and a
team-high 10 rebounds.
The teams ran pretty well
even in the first half, as neither team gained more than a
five-point advantage. The Lady Eagles were down just four
at the half, despite a 28.6 shooting percentage.
The Panthers opened up the
second stanza with a 10-2 run, fueled by four different
scorers and three Haven turnovers. LHU would battle back,
going on a 9-0 run of its own, capped with a steal and
lay-up by Gabrielle, cutting the VUU lead to one.
Virginia Union then
started its 13-0 run, scoring 13 of the game’s final 14
points and putting the game out of reach.
Hall, Gabrielle, Lee and
the rest of the Lady Eagles are back in action Saturday,
Nov. 27 at 1 p.m. at Mercyhurst College. |
