Thursday Morning First Round Results

125 – #2 Jody Strittmatter (Iowa) wbf Trap McCormack (LHU), 2:44
          Strittmatter scored a takedown at 10 seconds and worked McCormack until the pin                                  
          at 0:16 remaining.

133 – Witt Durden (Oklahoma) dec. Scott Bair (LHU), 8-2
           Bair scored the first takedown of the match but Durden controlled the offense after
           a quick escape.

141 - #12 Mike Maney (LHU) wbf Pat Diaz (James Madison), 6:27
           Maney led, 12-2, by the start of the third period, and scored two takedowns in the
           final period before the fall.
149 - #7 JaMarr Billman (LHU) wbtf Nate Wachter (PSU), 24-9 6:20
           Billman tallied 11 takedowns, ending each period on top and earning the 24-9
           technical fall.
157 – Gray Maynard (Michigan State) wbf Jason Gilligan (LHU), 5:48
           After a scoreless first period, Maynard chose down, earned the escape then the
           takedown.  Gilligan escaped and closed out the second down, 3-1.  Maynard came
           out in the third with the takedown and pin at 1:12.
184 – #4 Victor Sveda (Indiana) wbf Josh Millard (LHU), 3:56
           Millard trailed just 5-7 entering into the second period.  Sveda scored the reversal
           to open the second stanza, followed by the pin.
197 –  #12 Joe DeGain (Michigan) dec. Avery Zerkle (LHU), 7-5
           Zerkle made the first offensive move of the bout, scoring the takedown and
           closing out the first period with a 1-0 lead.  Zerkle also lead after the second, 4-3. 
           DeGain scored the escape to open the third period, and another takedown put him
           ahead, 6-4.  An escape for Zerkle made the score 6-5, but DeGain had earned
           riding time and closed out with the 7-5 victory.
          

Thursday Evening Wrestlebacks & Championship Second Round 

Championship Bracket
141 - #12 Mike Maney (LHU) dec. #5 Donnie DeFilippis (George Mason), 6-5
           The bulk of the action in this bout occurred in the second period, ending in a 5-5
           tie.  Maney chose the defensive position to open the third stanza, escaping and
           holding on for the 6-5 win.
149 - #7 JaMarr Billman (LHU) dec. #10 Keaton Anderson (Ohio State), 3-2
           Billman’s escape four seconds into the third period sealed his victory, advancing
           the LHU junior one step closer to a return to the victory stand. 

Wrestlebacks
125 – Trap McCormack (LHU) dec. Jacob Gray (Edinboro), 12-5
          McCormack started off with a 4-1 lead after one period to defeat Gray, 12-5,
          including 4:06 of riding time.  This was McCormack’s third victory over the
          Edinboro wrestler this season.
125 – Trap McCormack (LHU) dec. Kore Sharpley (Ohio State), 5-4
          McCormack slid past Sharpley of Ohio State 5-4, earning a stalling point near the
          close of the third period to edge past the Buckeye wrestler.
133 – Scott Bair (LHU) wbf Derrick Hayes (Fresno State), 4:45
          Bair was up, 9-2, before scoring the fall over Hayes to remain alive in the
          wrestlebacks.
157 – Sulieman Mumin (Coppin State) dec. Jason Gilligan (LHU), 8-5
          Gilligan cut Mumin’s lead to 5-4 by the close of the second period, but an escape
          and takedown by Mumin in the third period sealed Gilligan’s fate.
184 -  Ralph Denisco (Wisconsin) wbf Josh Millard (LHU), 6:08
          Millard trailed Denisco, 12-5, before the pin with 52 seconds remaining in the bout.
197 – Eric Mausser (Clarion) dec. Avery Zerkle (LHU), 3-2
           Zerkle scored the only takedown of the match, but Mausser rode out Zerkle in the
           entire third period to force the riding time point for the win.

141 - #4 Sean Gray (Virginia Tech) dec. #12 Mike Maney (LHU), 6-0
          Gray scored a takedown midway through the first period and had a 5-0 lead by the
          close of the second period and added a riding time point for the final 6-0 score.
149 - #2 Jared Lawrence (Minnesota) dec. #7 JaMarr Billman (LHU), 6-3
          Billman’s three points came from escapes in the first and third periods as he
          suffered his second loss of the season. 

Wrestlebacks
125 - #6 Matt Brown (Oklahoma State) dec. Trap McCormack (LHU), 4-3
          McCormack gave up a reversal and a takedown, closing out his third national
          tournament with a 2-2 record. McCormack records his first 30-win season,
          wrapping up at 30-5 overall.
133 - #6 Rob Loper (Pittsburgh) dec. Scott Bair (LHU), 4-0
          Following a scoreless first period, Loper rode Bair for the entire second period and
          scored an escape and last second takedown in the third for the win.  Bair closes out
          his final national tournament with a 1-2 mark and a 27-6 season record. The Bald
          Eagle senior ends his LHU career as a three-time national qualifier with a 78-43
          ledger.
141 – Mark Conley (Navy) dec. #12 Mike Maney (LHU), 3-1
          Maney and Conley traded escapes to open the second and third periods, but it was
          Conley’s takedown midway through the third period that sealed the 3-1 outcome. 
          Maney closes out his freshman season at 28-6.
149 – #7 JaMarr Billman (LHU) wbf #1 Reggie Wright (Oklahoma State), 1:49
          Billman’s pin was the first scoring action of the bout with just 1:49 expired.
149 - #7 JaMarr Billman (LHU) dec. #11 Mike Kulczycki (Michigan), 13-11
          Billman built up an 11-4 cushion, surviving a late match comeback attempt by
          Kulczycki for the 13-11 victory.
         

Day Three

Wrestleback Semifinals
149 - #8 Jared Frayer (Oklahoma) dec. #7 JaMarr Billman (LHU),5-0
          Frayer rode out Billman in the third period and scored three near fall points for the
          5-0 victory. 

Fifth Place Match
149 - #7 JaMarr Billman (LHU)  dec. #2 Jared Lawrence (Minnesota), 7-4
          After a three minutes of getting acquainted, Billman took over a 2-1 lead at the close of the second period.  Billman edged ahead, 5-1, in the opening minute of the third period but Lawrence earned an escape then a takedown to threaten at 5-4.  An escape and then a penalty point awarded to Billman helped seal the Bald Eagle’s victory and avenge a 6-3 loss to Lawrence in the quarterfinals.  Billman closes out the season at 25-3 and earns his second All-America award with the fifth-place finish.

-Avery Zerkle and Josh Millard produced their best performances yet at the EWL Championships… Zerkle finished sixth and Millard did not place at last year’s EWL tournament.
