BALD EAGLES FINISH FOURTH AT EWL CHAMPIONSHIPS

(Morgantown, W.Va.) – The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania wrestling team (12-11) closed out competition with a fourth-place team finish at the 2003 Eastern Wrestling League Championships being held in the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown, W. Va.  Bald Eagles Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area), Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) and Morgan Horner (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights) all earned automatic bids to the NCAA Division I National Championships by virtue of finishing among the top three at their respective weight classes.  Both Maney and Horner placed as runners-up, while Gilligan was a third-place finisher. Justin Owens (Morrisdale/West Branch) earned a wild card bid to nationals, making him the fourth Haven qualifier.

Edinboro University captured its fifth EWL Championship with 129.5 team points.  West Virginia University (123.5 pts) closed out the tournament as the runner-up, followed by Cleveland State University (80.5 pts) in third.  Lock Haven was fourth with 75.5 points and the University of Pittsburgh was close behind in fifth place with 75.0 points.  Clarion University (61.5 pts), Virginia Tech (44.5 pts.) and Bloomsburg University (44.0 pts.) rounded out the field in sixth, seventh and eighth place.
Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area) earned his third berth to the national tournament with a second-place finish at 141 pounds.  Maney posted a 14-3 major decision over Cleveland State’s Paul Theodore in the first round, then advanced to the finals with a 4-1 decision against Pittsburgh’s Ron Tarquinio.  The championship match pitted Maney against Edinboro’s Cory Ace in a rematch of this season’s PSAC Tournament finals, which Maney won by fall in 6:59.  This time the win would not fall Maney’s way, however, as he was forced to take the injury default at 3:00 after sustaining a concussion.  Ace had taken an early 4-0 lead before the bout was ended after one period.
In the championship bout at 197 pounds, Bald Eagle freshman Morgan Horner (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights) was unable to get his offense in gear against Edinboro’s David Shunamon as he wrapped up the tournament in second place after a 5-2 loss to the Fighting Scot.  Shunamon was leading 3-1 after two periods of action, and a takedown with just seconds remaining for the EUP wrestler closed out the match at 5-2. Horner had pinned his way to the finals, winning by fall over Virginia Tech’s Shaun Guttridge (1:48) and Cleveland State’s Stipe Miocic (3:30).
Two Haven grapplers advanced to the consolation finals, Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) and Mike Greenberg (Canton/Canton).  In the 165-pound bracket, Jason Gilligan earned his second trip to nationals with a third-place finish.  Gilligan lost, 3-1 to Edinboro’s Matt King in the semifinals before dropping down to the consolation bracket where he defeated Bloomsburg’s Ryan Garner by fall in 2:19 to advance to the third-place bout. There, Gilligan opened strong versus Virginia Tech’s Mike Cox with a takedown midway through the first period and 1:41 of riding time.  Three more takedowns, including two in the final period, boosted the Lock Haven junior to the 10-2 major decision.
Mike Greenberg, wrestling at 184 pounds, gave up a fall in 5:07 to returning champion Scott Justus of Virginia Tech in the semifinals. A 4-1 decision over Bloomsburg’s Chad Hoare paired Greenberg with Edinboro’s Alex Clemsen for third place.  The Bald Eagle scored the first offensive points of the bout, jumping out to a 2-1 lead after one period.  Clemsen pulled ahead, 4-3, after two stanzas, then added another takedown with under a minute remaining for the 6-5 victory over Greenberg.
Scoring fifth-place finishes were Justin Owens (Morrisdale/West Branch) and Steve Itterly (Bethlehem/Nazareth).  At 133 pounds, Owens dropped the consolation semifinal to Clarion’s Rad Martinez, 7-3, bouncing down to wrestle for fifth-place against Pittsburgh’s Mike Ciotti. In that match-up, Owens posted the first period fall over Ciotti in 2:15.  LHU heavyweight Itterly advanced through to the consolation semis on a forfeit from Bloomsburg’s Tony Milone, where he lost a 7-1 decision against Russ Davie of Cleveland State.  Paired with Pittsburgh’s Bob Kail for the fifth-place match-up, Itterly came out on top, 7-3, to finish in fifth place.
At 125 pounds, Jim Collins (Jonestown/Northern Lebanon) won his consolation quarterfinal bout with a fall in 1:04 over Geoff Head of Virginia Tech, but was sent down to the fifth-place match-up after a 9-5 loss to West Virginia’s Seth Lisa.  In a high-scoring bout, Collins lost to Pittsburgh’s Jordan Sianni, 19-11, to finish sixth.
The Lock Haven University wrestling team will send its contingent to the NCAA Division I National Wrestling Championships in Kansas City, Mo., from March 20-22.  Three wrestlers, Mike Maney (141), Jason Gilligan (165), and Morgan Horner (197), earned automatic bids to nationals.  Justin Owens (133) earned a wild card bid into the tournament following a fifth-place showing at 133 pounds.

BALD EAGLES FIFTH AFTER FIRST DAY OF EWL CHAMPIONSHIPS

(Morgantown, W.Va.) – The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania wrestling team (12-11) closed out day one in fifth place at the Eastern Wrestling League Championships being held in the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown, W. Va.  Four Bald Eagles advanced to the semifinal round with first-round wins -- Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area), Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville), Mike Greenberg (Canton/Canton), and Morgan Horner (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights).
The host institution, West Virginia University, is currently in first place, winning eight of its first-round match-ups for 47.5 points.  Edinboro University is second, also with eight semifinalists, with 47.0 points, while the University of Pittsburgh has 33.0 points to rank third after day one. Cleveland State University is fourth with 32.5 points followed up by Lock Haven in fifth with 23.0 team points.  Virginia Tech (20.0), Clarion University (18.0) and Bloomsburg University (11.0) round out the team standings.
Mike Maney had little problem with Cleveland State’s Paul Theodore in the 141-pound bracket, scoring the 14-3 major decision in first round action.  He will meet up with Pittsburgh’s Ron Tarquinio in the semifinal round. At 165 pounds, Jason Gilligan recorded the only offensive points of the bout against Cleveland State’s Jason Effner with a takedown in the third period to pocket the 3-2 victory.  Gilligan’s next opponent will be Edinboro’s Matt King.
At 184 pounds, Mike Greenberg upset #16-ranked Ryan Wilman of West Virginia University in a 3-1 victory, securing a takedown with 17 seconds remaining to break the 1-1 tie. He will face returning champion Scott Justus of Virginia Tech in the next round.  Recording the most decisive LHU victory of the evening was 197-pounder Morgan Horner, who pinned Virginia Tech’s Shaun Guttridge in 1:48 after earning control quickly after the opening whistle.  Horner matches up against Cleveland State’s Stipe Miocic in the semifinal round.
Bald Eagle wrestlers who will compete in the consolation bracket tomorrow include Jim Collins (Jonestown/Northern Lebanon) (125 lbs.), Justin Owens (Morrisdale/West Branch) (133 lbs.), James LaValle (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park) (149 lbs.), Charlie Brenneman (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) (157 lbs.), Chris Haines (Gettysburg/Gettysburg) (174 lbs.), and Steve Itterly (Bethlehem/Nazareth) (HWT).

2/21/03 - Lock Haven 24, Clarion 16
(Thomas Fieldhouse - Lock Haven, Pa.)

(Lock Haven, Pa.) - The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania wrestling team (12-11, 3-4 EWL) scored a 24-16 victory over Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) opponent Clarion University (8-8, 1-5 EWL) in front of the home crowd at Thomas Fieldhouse in their final dual meet of the season.  The win brings the Bald Eagles overall mark to 12-11, giving the program its 12th-straight winning season.
A string of four wins from 165 through 197 pounds along with an upset victory at 133 pounds played a large role in grabbing the dual meet win for the Bald Eagles.  Lock Haven had its work cut out for it, however, as the match opened with a fall for Clarion’s Peter Derstine over Jim Collins (Jonestown/Northern Lebanon) at 5:35 after Collins had been ahead, 10-8, entering into the final period.  Justin Owens (Morrisdale/West Branch) did his share to help keep the Bald Eagles within striking distance, upsetting No. 14-ranked Rad Martinez, 4-3, after a double-leg takedown with just 37 seconds remaining in the bout.
No. 7-ranked Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area) was good for a 3-2 decision over Frank Edgar to even up the match at 6-6.  At 149 pounds, James LaValle (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park) jumped out to a 7-1 lead after two periods, then scored a takedown with four seconds left to earn the bonus points with a 12-3 major decision to give Lock Haven its first lead, 10-6.
Clarion vaulted back in front after the 157 pound bout, which saw Jeremy Reitz pin Matt Marquart (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) in 4:42 to regain the team lead at 12-10.
That would be the Golden Eagles’ last glimpse at the lead, however, with Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) holding strong for the 5-2 decision over Chris Horning at 165 pounds.  Chris Haines (Gettysburg/Gettysburg) bounced back from a 2-1 deficit against Dave Gardner after one period to score the 10-5 victory, upping the LHU advantage to 16-12.  With Clarion boasting two ranked wrestlers in the final two bouts, Mike Greenberg (Canton/Canton) posted a 17-0 technical fall over Eric Spence in the third period to provide a nine-point cushion, 21-12.
In the premier match-up of the evening, Lock Haven’s No. 15-ranked Morgan Horner (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights) edged out No. 12-ranked Eric Mausser, 4-3, in a high-energy showdown. Horner’s win put the meet safely into the Haven’s pockets, 24-12.  In the final bout, Lock Haven freshman Tim Meyers (Mill Hall/Central Mountain) held his ground but No. 9-ranked John Testa was too strong and handed the Bald Eagle an 18-7 major decision.
Lock Haven University will prepare for the 2003 EWL Championships being hosted by West Virginia University on March 8-9.

2/19/03 - Penn State 41, Lock Haven 3
(Rec Hall, University Park, Pa.)

(University Park, Pa.) - The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania wrestling team (11-11, 2-4 EWL), severely weakened by injury and illness, fell to 14th-ranked Penn State University (11-8), 41-3, on the road in Rec Hall this evening.  With four regular starters sidelined, red-shirt freshman Morgan Horner (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights) provided the only Haven points of the evening at 197 pounds to save the match from becoming a shutout.
The match opened at 125 pounds, as LHU’s Jim Collins (Jonestown/Northern Lebanon) closed on the low end of a 15-7 major decision against Adam Smith.  Penn State’s No. 9-ranked Josh Moore pinned Justin Owens (Morrisdale/West Branch) in the first period, then John Holsinger (Pennsburg/Quakertown) defaulted to No. 15-ranked Scott Moore, bringing the PSU lead to 16-0 after three bouts.
The Haven’s James LaValle (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park) hung close with No. 20-ranked Nate Galloway at 149 pounds, but ended up losing 3-2 in the low-scoring dual.   Matt Marquart (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) was pinned in the second period by Nate Wachter at 157 pounds.  Penn State then scored two decisions in the 165 and 174 pound bouts, as Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) dropped a 7-2 decision to Doc Vecchio and Eric O’Connor (Elizabethtown/Elizabethtown) lost by a 6-2 mark to Adam Shepler.  An 18-6 major decision for No. 5-ranked Mark Becks over LHU’s Mike Greenberg (Canton/Canton) brought the lopsided team score to 35-0 and threatened the Bald Eagles with the prospect of their second shutout of the season.
A slim 8-7 decision by Horner over Ryan Cummins at 197 pounds saved the shutout, however, as Tim Meyers (Mill Hall/Central Mountain), who was filling in for an ailing Steve Itterly, was pinned at the close of the second period by No. 8-ranked Pat Cummins to bring the final match score to 41-3 in favor of the Nittany Lions.
Lock Haven University wrestling will host Clarion University in its final dual meet and EWL match-up of the season on Friday, February 21, at 7:30 p.m. in Thomas Fieldhouse.

2/14/03 - Lock Haven 29, Bloomsburg 12
(Nelson Field House - Bloomsburg, Pa.)

(Bloomsburg, Pa.) - The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania wrestling team (11-10, 2-4 EWL) ended a four-game skid with tonight’s 29-12 victory over Bloomsburg University (7-7, 2-5 EWL) in Eastern Wrestling League action at Bloomsburg’s Nelson Field House.  The win also extends the Bald Eagles streak over the Huskies to 13 matches dating back to 1990.
The teams swapped wins in the first four bouts, starting at 149 pounds with Lock Haven’s James LaValle (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park) who was looking to avenge a loss to Bloomsburg’s Brad Forbes suffered in the semifinals at the PSAC Tournament. LaValle found himself in a 4-4 tie with Forbes with just over a minute remaining in the final period after the Huskie picked up two backpoints.  LaValle scored a reversal with 30 seconds remaining, however, and with a riding time advantage stemming from the first period, was able to hang on for the 7-5 win despite a late escape by Forbes.
Bloomsburg gained the 6-3 lead after No. 13-ranked George Carter pinned Matt Marquart (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford).  Carter was ahead, 12-2, just seconds into the middle period, when he caught Marquart on the edge of the mat and held him for the fall in 3:20.  At 165 pounds, Lock Haven’s Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) evened the team score up with a 6-3 decision over Ryan Garner.
The Huskies put together back-to-back wins at 174 and 184 pounds to move ahead once again, this time 12-6.  At 174 pounds, No. 19-ranked Hunter Guenot defeated the Bald Eagles’ Chris Haines (Gettysburg/Gettysburg) by a 6-2 decision.  Mike Greenberg (Canton/Canton) was behind 7-3 entering the final period versus Chad Hoare, and despite a flurry of activity in the waning minute, could not get enough points and lost by a 9-6 margin in the 184-pound match-up.
Needing to repair the deficit and gain some momentum going into the final five bouts of the match, 197-pounder Morgan Horner (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights) answered the call by pinning Andy Ludlow in just 56 seconds to tie up the match once more at 12 apiece.  Horner scored a takedown just seconds after the opening whistle and cranked Ludlow onto his back for the fall.
The Bald Eagles would feed off that energy, taking the next four bouts to seal the win.  Steve Itterly (Bethlehem/Nazareth) used a takedown in sudden victory to score the 5-3 decision versus Tony Milone at heavyweight.  At 125 pounds, LHU’s Jim Collins (Jonestown/Northern Lebanon) used a late takedown to score bonus points with the 11-2 major decision against Michael Collins.  Justin Owens (Morrisdale/West Branch) matched Collins’ major decision with a 10-2 victory over Justin Haupt at 133 pounds.  Closing out the win was No. 7-ranked Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area), who made quick work of Mark Piermattei with a fall in 2:14 to bring the final score to 29-12 in favor of the Bald Eagles.

2/8/03 - Pittsburgh 22, Lock Haven 18
(Thomas Fieldhouse - Lock Haven, Pa.)

(Lock Haven, Pa.) - The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania wrestling team (10-10, 1-4 EWL) was met with a 22-18 loss to the visiting Panthers of the University of Pittsburgh (8-3, 4-1 EWL) this evening in Thomas Fieldhouse. A strong middle-weight contingent helped lead Pittsburgh to its seventh-straight dual meet victory this season, while the loss knocked the Bald Eagles down to a four-match skid.
The Panthers opened up forcefully with a third-period fall for No. 14-ranked Jordan Sianni over Jim Collins (Jonestown/Northern Lebanon).  Sianni had been controlling the match before the pin, ahead 9-0 shortly into the third period.
Lock Haven’s Justin Owens (Morrisdale/West Branch) answered with a commanding 16-0 technical fall over James Thornton at 133 pounds, keeping the Bald Eagles in the match early, 6-5.
The Haven took over the lead after the 141-pound bout, which saw the reemergence of No. 7-ranked Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area) after a week off due to illness. Maney went up, 5-0, over Pittsburgh’s Ronald Tarquinio after two stanzas, and finished off with an 8-1 victory to give Lock Haven the 8-6 team advantage.
Pittsburgh’s middle-weights stretched out the lead to a sizeable 22-8 cushion, winning the next four bouts from 149 through 174 pounds. At 149 pounds, No. 19-ranked Justin Giovinco posted a 4-1 decision against Lock Haven’s James LaValle (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park), and 157-pounder Matt Marquart (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) lost by major decision to Justin Nestor.  At 165 pounds after a scoreless first period, Pittsburgh’s Francis Iorfido reversed Lock Haven’s Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) to open the second, then cranked the Bald Eagle to his back for the pin in 3:38.  Chris Haines (Gettysburg/Gettysburg) was down, 3-1, to No. 13-ranked Carl Fronhofer in the 174-pound bout, but the Panther came out in the third period and piled up a takedown and near-fall points to score the final 8-2 win.
The Bald Eagles assembled a run of wins in the final three bouts, but could not earn enough bonus points to overcome the deficit.  Two first-period takedowns helped lift LHU 184-pounder Mike Greenberg (Canton/Canton) to the 8-3 victory over Mike Croyle.  Greenberg held a 4-2 lead after the first period of action, then controlled Croyle the entire second period to build his riding time advantage.  A four-point third stanza sealed the victory for the Bald Eagle, putting the team deficit at 22-11.
At 197-pounds, the Bald Eagles’ Morgan Horner (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights) powered his way to an 18-5 major decision over Gregg Osbeck.  Horner had jumped out to a 7-3 lead including 2:20 of riding time in the first period alone.
In the final bout, heavyweight Steve Itterly (Bethlehem/Nazareth) defeated Robert Kail, 3-2, after an escape in the final period proved to be the deciding point.
Lock Haven wrestling will next travel to Bloomsburg University on Feb. 14 for an EWL match-up beginning at 7:30 p.m.  Pittsburgh will next host West Virginia University on Feb. 14, also at 7:30 p.m.

2/7/03 - #9 West Virginia 31, Lock Haven 8
(Thomas Fieldhouse - Lock Haven, Pa.)

(Lock Haven, Pa.) - The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania wrestling team (10-9, 1-3 EWL) lost, 31-8, to No. 9-ranked West Virginia University (4-3, 3-0 EWL) in Eastern Wrestling League action this evening in Thomas Fieldhouse. It was the second-straight victory for the Mountaineers over the Bald Eagles.
West Virgina put the first points on the board, opening with 125 pounders Jim Collins (Jonestown/Northern Lebanon) and No. 17-ranked Seth Lisa.  Lisa was up 6-4 after two periods, then scored the reversal in the third period to stretch out his lead before the final 8-4 decision.  The Haven took what would amount to its only lead of the evening after the 133-pound bout, as Justin Owens (Morrisdale/West Branch) used a six-point third period along with 3:49 of riding time to earn the 12-3 major decision and the 4-3 LHU lead.
The Mountaineers answered loudly, however, winning the next six bouts including four by major decision. At 141 pounds, No. 14-ranked Shane Cunanan scored a total of ten takedowns in a 24-11 win against LHU’s John Holsinger (Pennsburg/Quakertown). James LaValle (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park) went down 0-5 after two periods of action before No. 7-ranked Billy Smith unleashed another pair of takedowns and two back points by the end of regulation to earn the 12-2 victory at 149 pounds.  Bald Eagle freshman Matt Marquart (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) filled in for an injured Charlie Brenneman at 157 pounds, losing to West Virginia’s Mike Torriero, 12-2.
At 165 pounds, Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) was behind, 3-1, to No. 8-ranked Tom McMath entering the final stanza when he scored an escape to cut the deficit to just one point with no riding time involved.  McMath’s first-period takedown proved to be the deciding factor, as he held off the junior Bald Eagle to take away the slim 3-2 win.
Chris Haines (Gettysburg/Gettysburg) fell victim to a 15-5 major decision against the returning national champion and top-ranked Greg Jones at 174 pounds. In the 184-pound bout, Lock Haven’s Mike Greenberg (Canton/Canton) tied up the bout at 1-1 with a third period escape, but No. 17-ranked Ryan Wilman caught him off-balance with just 11 seconds to go and took him to the mat for the 3-1 victory and the 25-4 team lead.
The Haven received a moral boost from 197-pounder Morgan Horner (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights), who posted the 15-7 major decision against Adrian Thompson. Horner took Thompson to the mat right off the first whistle.  He had rolled Thompson to his back and nearly earned the fall, but had to settle for the three back points instead.  In the second period, scoring was even, 3-3, to bring Horner to the final stanza in the lead, 11-5.  After a neutral start, Thompson moved in and scored the takedown, but a quick escape kept the Bald Eagle out of danger.  Another takedown for Horner with 33 seconds remaining sealed the win, and along with a riding time point, the 15-7 final.
The match’s end was anticlimactic for the Bald Eagles, who saw WVU’s No. 13-ranked Brent Miller pin heavyweight Steve Itterly (Bethlehem/Nazareth) in the first period, bringing the final team score to 31-8 in favor of West Virginia.

2/1/03 - Edinboro 43, Lock Haven 0
(McComb Fieldhouse - Edinboro, Pa.)

(Edinboro, Pa.) - The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania wrestling team’s (10-8, 1-2 EWL) road trip to Edinboro University (8-4, 2-1 EWL) ended up in the lopsided 43-0 loss for the Bald Eagles.  It was the third shutout loss for the Bald Eagles in school history and the first since the 1991 season.
Starting off the bout at 125 pounds, Jim Collins (Jonestown/Northern Lebanon) lost by fall to Jacob Gray in the first period.  Justin Owens (Morrisdale/West Branch) met up with Shawn Bunch at 133 pounds, losing by decision, 12-5. John Holsinger (Pennsburg/Quakertown) was down only 2-1 to Edinboro’s No. 19-ranked Cory Ace after one period, but Ace worked quickly in the second period to score the pin over the Bald Eagle. A closer match evolved at 149 pounds, but despite scoring the first takedown of the bout, James LaValle (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park) ended on the low end of the 11-7 decision to the Boro’s Ron Doppelheuer.
Charlie Brenneman (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) fell behind early to Edinboro’s Eric Ring and never recovered, closing out the bout with a 13-5 loss. A forfeit at 165 pounds brought the Haven deficit to 28-0 after six weight classes.  Chris Haines (Gettysburg/Gettysburg) was unable to get past Nate Yetzer at 174 pounds, down 4-1 after one period before the final 6-2 decision. Mike Greenberg (Canton/Canton) and Alex Clemson battled at 184 pounds with Clemson emerging the 4-1 winner.
Perhaps the closest match of the evening, though not noticeable by the final result, was the 197-pound bout between Morgan Horner (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights) and No. 4-ranked David Shunamon. Tied at 3-3 after one period, Horner scored a late takedown and then earned two back points near the close of the second period to move ahead, 7-4. Shunamon fought back hard in the final stanza, however, scoring two takedowns to bring the score to 9-8 in favor of Horner.  With Horner unable to earn the escape after the second of Shunamon’s takedowns, the Fighting Scot had racked up enough riding time for the extra point to force the sudden victory.  In the overtime, Shunamon took Horner to his back and pinned him 45 seconds into the period to bring the score to 40-0 in favor of Edinboro.
At heavyweight, though he had pinned his Fighting Scot opponent in the PSAC Tournament semifinals, Steve Itterly (Bethlehem/Nazareth) was met with a 6-5 loss to the Boro’s Joe Hennis this evening, bringing the final count to 43-0.
Lock Haven will next host another weekend of EWL action, as West Virginia University comes to Thomas Fieldhouse on Friday, February 7, and the University of Pittsburgh visits on Saturday, February 8. Both matches are slated for a 7:30 p.m. start.

1/31/03 - Cleveland State 30, Lock Haven 6
(WoodlingGymnasium - Cleveland, Ohio)

(Cleveland, Ohio) - An injury-depleted Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania wrestling team (10-7, 1-1 EWL) dropped its first Eastern Wrestling League match-up of the season, falling to Cleveland State University (9-5, 2-1 EWL) 30-6 in action on the road at Woodling Gymnasium.
The Bald Eagles dug themselves into a deep hole early, falling behind 14-0 after the first four bouts.  The match began at 125 pounds with Lock Haven’s Jim Collins (Jonestown/Northern Lebanon) suffering a 27-11 technical fall to No. 18-ranked Rocco Mansueto.  The Vikings’ No. 16-ranked Phil Mansueto controlled the Haven’s Justin Owens (Morrisdale/West Branch) at 133 pounds, scoring all the offensive points of the match for the 9-5 decision.  With No. 7-ranked Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area) out due to illness, Lock Haven activated junior John Holsinger (Pennsburg/Quakertown) for the 141 pound match.  Holsinger fell behind Cleveland State’s Paul Theodore after one period, 2-0, and was down 4-1 entering the final stanza. Holsinger tacked on two takedowns in the third frame, but it was too late as he lost by the final 8-6 decision.  The Vikings picked up another three team points at 149 pounds as Anthony Coleman broke away in the third period to take the 11-5 win from James LaValle (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park)
Lock Haven’s first team points came at 157 pounds, as Charlie Brenneman (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) pocketed a 5-2 decision versus Josh Ging. Brenneman was credited with the only offensive points of the bout, taking Ging down late in the first period. A penalty point, escape point and riding time point completed the Bald Eagles’ scoring in the win, bringing the team score to 14-3 in favor of the Vikings.
Short on numbers, the Bald Eagles were forced to forfeit at 165 pounds due to a neck injury to regular starter Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) and fell behind, 20-3, on the team ledger. Chris Haines (Gettysburg/Gettysburg) outlasted CSU’s Matt Klinger in the 174-pound dual, winning 5-3 in sudden victory. Haines was up, 3-2, after two periods but Klinger owned the advantage in riding time.  Haines was able to erase Klinger’s time advantage, however, the Viking used an escape to tie up the match and force the sudden victory minute. With just three seconds remaining, Haines was able to capitalize with a takedown to win the bout.
At 184 pounds, No. 4-ranked Gerald Harris handed Lock Haven’s Mike Greenberg (Canton/Canton) a 3-2 decision to bring the team deficit to 23-6.  Cleveland State added wins at both 197 and heavyweight to close the deal.  At 197 pounds, Morgan Horner (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights) fell victim to Stipe Miosic in a close 5-3 decision, while the Vikings’ No. 18-ranked Russ Davie controlled LHU’s Steve Itterly (Bethlehem/Nazareth) for a 10-1 major decision.
The Bald Eagles continue on the road, visiting EWL and PSAC opponent Edinboro University (6-4, 0-1 EWL) tomorrow, Saturday February 1, at 7:30 p.m.

1/25/03 - at PSAC Championships (Final Day)
(Pucillo Gymnasium - Millersville, PA)

(Millersville, Pa.) - The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania wrestling team is the 2003 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Wrestling Championships runner-up for the second-straight season, and 141-pounder Mike Maney captured his third-straight conference title.  With 134.50 team points and five individual champions, the Fighting Scots of Edinboro University earned their second-straight team championship and their seventh overall. The Bald Eagles were only seven points behind the leader for their second-place performance, posting a total of 127.50 team tallies.
The Bald Eagles put four wrestlers in the finals and four into the consolation finals, boasting one champion and a total of six wrestlers in third place or higher.
Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area) becomes a three-time PSAC Champion in exciting fashion, pinning Edinboro’s Corey Ace at the buzzer for the individual 141-pound title.  Maney and Ace battled back and forth throughout most of the first period, but Maney grabbed the takedown over Ace with just seven seconds remaining to move into a 2-0 lead.  Ace started the second period in the defensive position and scored the escape within the first 30 seconds.  Ace then jumped onto the offensive and posted the takedown late in the second to send Maney into the final period down by one point, 3-2.  Maney elected to start the period down, and had problems as Ace was able to keep control for almost the entire stanza. As the seconds ticked off, however, Maney was able to maneuver in a tangle at the edge of the mat to reverse fate and rocked onto his side to roll Ace onto his back to score the fall at the very last possible second.

In the 165-pound finals, Lock Haven’s Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) was unable to get past defending conference titlist Matt R. King of Edinboro, finishing as the tournament runner-up in a 7-2 loss.  King accounted for all the offensive points of the bout, tallying a takedown in each period for the victory. Gilligan tacked on his two points in the third period, escaping at the start after beginning in the defensive position and again after a King takedown midway through.
After stunning the defending champion in the semifinals, Lock Haven red-shirt freshman Morgan Horner (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights) was impressive but was unable to repeat the feat in the championship match as he fell, 3-1 in sudden victory, to No. 4-ranked David Shunamon of Edinboro. A scoreless first period gave way to a 1-0 lead for Shunamon after the second period came to an end.  Horner opened the final stanza on the defensive, and posted the escape to even things up at 1:22.  The bout went into sudden victory with the 1-1 tie, and Shunamon scored the takedown 12 seconds into the extra minute for the conference title.
Steve Itterly (Bethlehem/Nazareth) met up with three-time defending champion John Testa of Clarion in the heavyweight final, losing 8-4 to finish as the runner-up. Testa built a 4-2 lead by the close of period one, and was up 5-2 after two stanzas.  As time elapsed in the third period, Itterly posted two escapes to bring the final margin to 8-4, giving Testa the win and making him the 12th wrestler in PSAC history to win four-straight conference titles.
In the third-place bout at 125, Lock Haven’s Jim Collins (Jonestown/Northern Lebanon) scored an early takedown then controlled most of the first period against Mark Koszyk of East Stroudsburg for the 2-1 lead.  The two traded points in the second period with Collins holding onto the one-point lead, 5-4.  An escape in the third along with the riding time point brought the Bald Eagle to the final 7-4 win.
Justin Owens (Morrisdale/West Branch Area) earned the third-place finish at 133 pounds with an 8-2 decision over Bloomsburg’s Justin Haupt.  Owens jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first stanza, then did all the scoring in the second period to increase his lead to 7-1. After a late escape by Haupt in the third and a riding time total of 3:13 for Owens, the final margin of victory for the LHU senior came to 8-2.
James LaValle (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park) finished fourth for the Bald Eagles at 149 pounds, ending up on the low end of a 10-7 decision to Ron Doppleheuer of Edinboro.  LaValle scored the first takedown of the match, but Doppleheuer held a slight 3-2 lead after the first period.  The Edinboro grappler scored a late takedown and two backpoints at the tail end of the second period for the 8-6 lead over LaValle. By the close of the match, LaValle had only been able to earn the escape then gave up another late takedown in the 10-7 loss.
In the fifth-place battle at 157 pounds, Charlie Brenneman (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) dominated East Stroudsburg’s Keith Smith for the 9-2 decision.  Brenneman did all of his scoring in the opening period, scoring two takedowns along with backpoints for the 9-1 lead.  An escape for Smith in the beginning of the second period would be the only other points of the match, as Brenneman held on for the 9-2 victory.
Chris Haines (Gettysburg/Gettysburg) finished fourth at 174 pounds, dropping an 8-6 match to John Carr of East Stroudsburg in the consolation finals. The two grapplers were tied at 3-3 after one period, then Carr inched ahead with an escape in the second period.  Haines gained control early in the third with an escape then a quick takedown, but the momentum was bounced back to Carr with just under a minute remaining.  Carr scored an escape and takedown to move back into the lead at the 0:53 mark, and a penalty point awarded to the East Stroudsburg wrestler due to stalling brought the final margin to 8-6.
Mike Greenberg (Canton/Canton) met up with Bloomsburg’s Chad Hoare in the fifth-place match at 184 pounds, winning by a 13-2 major decision.  The Bald Eagle rolled out to a 7-0 lead after one period and held a 10-
