BALD EAGLES SEVENTH AT EWL CHAMPIONSHIPS

(Bloomsburg, Pa.) – The Lock Haven wrestling team placed seventh overall at the 2004 EWL held in Bloomsburg, Pa., this weekend. The Bald Eagles had one automatic and two wild card national qualifiers in the two-day event as senior Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area) claimed his fourth career trip to the NCAA championship with the automatic bid after placing third at 149 pounds. Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) and Charlie Brenneman (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) both received wild card nods to wrestle at the national tournament.
Edinboro University and West Virginia University wrestled to a tie for the team championship, both squads boasting 99.50 points. The University of Pittsburgh was a close third with 97.50 points, while Cleveland State University (80.50) and Bloomsburg University (79) followed in fourth and fifth place.  Clarion University (70) was sixth, Lock Haven (57.50) was seventh and Virginia Tech (44.50) rounded out the field in eighth place.  Edinboro's Matt King (165 lbs.) was named the Outstanding Wrestler.
Four Bald Eagles advanced to the consolation finals to wrestle for an automatic spot at the national tournament, with one emerging with the guaranteed ticket. Mike Maney secured his fourth trip to the NCAA championships with his third-place finish at 149 pounds.  Maney, who had dropped down into the consolations after a semifinal loss, won his first bout in the lower bracket with a 2-0 decision over Bloomsburg’s Brad Forbes.  He then faced West Virginia ’s Mike Torriero in the third-place match, edging out the Mountaineer, 8-5. Maney had trailed, 4-3, entering into the third period but he unrolled a four-point move with a takedown and quick back points to bounce out into a 7-4 lead.  Maney held Torriero down the remainder of the period, the Mountaineer picking up a stall point, but with the addition of riding time, the senior Bald Eagle claimed the 8-5 win.
Jim Collins (Jonestown/Northern Lebanon), Jason Gilliganand Mike Greenberg (Canton/Canton) all brought home fourth-place finishes.  Collins had moved on to the 125-pound consolation finals after receiving a forfeit win, taking on Cleveland State’s DeAngelo Penn in the third-place bout.  Collins was ahead, 5-4, after two stanzas, but Penn had bundled up two minutes of bonus time after riding the Haven wrestler the entire second period. An early escape by Penn in the third period tied things up, 5-5, but Collins was unable to generate any offensive points and would give up the riding time tally in a 6-5 loss.

Mike Maney earned an automatic bid
 to the NCAA Division I
Wrestling Championships by
placing third at 149 pounds.

LHU's National Qualifiers
Charlie Brenneman (157 lbs.) (top L)
Jason Gilligan (165 lbs.) (top R)
Mike Maney (149 lbs.) (bottom)

At 165 pounds, Gilligan had advanced through to the third-place match after a 3-2 win over West Virginia’s Zac Fryling.  A takedown with 25 seconds left in the first period would give the Bald Eagle the boost needed to out-distance Fryling after each wrestler scored an escape in the second and third period.  In the consolation final, Gilligan was up on Pittsburgh ’s Zach Doll, 4-2, before getting caught in a flurry by Doll and ending up on his back after 2:50 .
Greenberg recorded a dominant 10-2 major decision over Bloomsburg’s Nate Shirk in the 184-pound consolation semifinals which included 3:27 of riding time. He would face Cleveland State’s Ron Howard for the third place medal, coming up just short in overtime, 11-9. Greenberg was behind, 7-3, entering the third period but a reversal and the two-point near fall that followed as the stanza came to a close would be enough to tie up the match, 9-9. Into the sudden victory period, Howard would post a quick takedown, ending the Bald Eagle’s hopes for the automatic spot at nationals.
Senior Charlie Brenneman  was a fifth-place finisher at 157 pounds. Brenneman lost a 6-5 decision to Jason Effner of Cleveland State by a riding time point, tossing him into his second match-up of the tournament against Bloomsburg’s Josh Loew.  Two takedowns in the first period set the tone as Brenneman defeated the Huskie, 12-6, for fifth place.
Both Dave Predko (Ridgway/Ridgway) and Steve Itterly (Bethlehem/Nazareth) were sixth-place finishers. At 133 pounds, Predko was tied, 2-2, with Bloomsburg’s Bryan Hart after two periods, but an escape and a riding time point for Hart brought the consolation semifinal score to 4-2 . In the fifth-place tilt, Predko was able to post only one escape point in the third period in a 6-1 loss against Pittsburgh ’s Mike Ciotti.
Itterly dropped two matches at heavyweight this afternoon to finish in sixth place.  He lost by a riding time point, 8-7, to Clarion’s Matt Wilcox after he was unable to get out of the defensive starting position in the third period. He then lost by a 9-0 major decision to Pittsburgh 's Travis Shirley, wrapping up action in sixth place.

March 6 -  at EWL Championships  (Day One)

Haven Wraps Up First Day of EWL Championships in Eighth Place

(Bloomsburg, Pa.) – The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania wrestling team is in eighth place at the conclusion of the first day of the 2004 Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) Championships being held in Bloomsburg , Pa.
Edinboro University leads the team race with 91.5 points followed closely by West Virginia University in second with 89 points.  The University of Pittsburgh is third (81.5), Bloomsburg University is fourth (50.5) and Clarion University is fifth (49.5).  Rounding out the final spots are Cleveland State (45.5), Virginia Tech (39) and Lock Haven (36.5).
While three Bald Eagles were still in the championship bracket following the quarterfinal round, the semifinal round was not kind as all three wrestlers lost by 3-1 finals.  At 149 pounds, Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area) was a 3-0 winner over Clarion’s T.J. McCance in the first round. Maney matched up with Pittsburgh’s Matt Kocher in the semifinal round, but was met with a 3-1 decision on a last-second takedown by the Panther to drop down to the consolation bracket.
The Haven’s Charlie Brenneman (Hollidaysburg/ Hollidaysburg) wasted little time in his opening bout, pinning Bloomsburg’s Josh Loew in 1:26 .  In the semifinals, Brenneman came up against Clarion’s Chris Horning for the third time this season.  After splitting the season series in which both matches came down to the tiebreaker rounds, it would be close again as Horning broke a 1-1 tie with a takedown with 32 seconds remaining in regulation and held for the 3-1 victory.

157-pounder Charlie Brenneman is one of
seven Bald Eagle grapplers who will
return to competition tomorrow
at the 2004 EWL Championships.

Complete EWL Results - Day One

Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) upped his record against former high school teammate and Clarion wrestler Jeremy Reitz with a 6-2 decision in the quarterfinal round at 165 pounds.  The semifinal round pit Gilligan against Virginia Tech’s Chris Stith.  In a close match that resembled their dual meet face-off which Stith won 1-1 in the tiebreaker, the score was locked at 1-1 after three periods of regulation time.  After Gilligan nearly scored a takedown, Stith turned and caught the Bald Eagle and took him to the mat for the two-pointer with 23 seconds expired for the 3-1 decision.
Four other Bald Eagle grapplers remain alive in the consolation bracket.  At 125 pounds, Jim Collins (Jonestown/Northern Lebanon ) advanced to tomorrow’s consolation semifinal round after going 1-1 in action today. Collins posted a quick takedown over Edinboro’s Chris Pruden in the consolation quarterfinals, then worked for the fall in just 1:07 . Collins had lost 3-2 to Bloomsburg’s Brian Sellers in the opening round after giving up a takedown to the Huskie with only one minute remaining.
Senior Dave Predko (Ridgway/Ridgway) has also earned a match in the consolation semifinals at 133 pounds. Predko lost his opening round bout against West Virginia ’s Seth Lisa, 6-3, after a late surge by Lisa erased the Bald Eagle’s early lead.  He advanced through the consolation quarterfinals with a bye.
Senior Mike Greenberg (Canton/Canton) advanced to the consolation semifinals with an 11-4 victory over Clarion’s Kyle Cathcart in the 184-pound quarterfinals of the lower bracket.  Greenberg had dropped a 7-5 decision against Shaun Guttridge of Virginia Tech in the opening round.
In the heavyweight bracket, LHU’s Steve Itterly (Bethlehem/Nazareth) is still in line to challenge for a spot at nationals, winning 7-1 against West Virginia ’s Lanfer Simpson in the consolation quarterfinals.  Itterly’s opening bout ended in a loss by fall ( 1:24 ) against Edinboro’s Joe Hennis.
Three Haven wrestlers have been eliminated from competition after going 0-2 on the day. Freshman 141-pounder Casey Moore (Beech Creek/Central Mountain) went 0-2 to end his stint at the tournament. Moore lost by technical fall to Pittsburgh ’s top-seeded Ron Tarquinio in the first round before a technical fall loss to Anthony Coleman of Cleveland State in the consolation bracket.

Feb. 21 -  Lock Haven 20, Bloomsburg University 16     (Lock Haven, Pa.)

LHU WRESTLING CLAIMS 20-16 VICTORY OVER BLOOMSBURG

(Lock Haven, Pa.) – Wrestling in their final matches in Thomas Fieldhouse, all six Bald Eagle seniors wrestling came away with hard-fought victories, including the decisive win by Steve Itterly (Easton/Nazareth) at heavyweight, to give Lock Haven University (4-10, 1-6 EWL) the 20-16 victory over Bloomsburg University (8-8, 3-4 EWL) this evening in Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) action. It was the 14th straight win for the Bald Eagles over the Huskies, and gave them their only league victory of the season.
Starting at 125 pounds, Bloomsburg took the early 3-0 lead as Brian Sellers put a 7-3 decision over sophomore Jim Collins (Jonestown/Northern Lebanon) in the books.

Steve Itterly's takedown with 45 seconds remaining sealed his win, 5-4, and the
team's 20-16 victory over Bloomsburg.

Senior Dave Predko (Ridgway/Ridgway) evened the score, jumping out to a 4-0 lead over Bryan Hart in the 133 pound match-up. Predko added a reversal and a riding time point after three periods, claiming the 7-1 win to tie things up at 3-3.
At 141 pounds, Bloomsburg picked up a bonus point as Scott Heckman controlled true freshman Casey Moore (Beech Creek/Central Mountain) throughout for the 15-1 major decision.
Senior and No. 15-ranked Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area) was a 4-0 winner over Brad Forbes. Maney posted a takedown early in the first period and kept Forbes down to pick up riding time. An escape in the second for Maney gave him a 3-0 lead, and after a neutral start and no scoring in the third period, he recorded the 4-0 victory to close in on Bloomsburg, 7-6.
At 157 pounds, a commanding 14-5 major decision by senior Charlie Brenneman (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) over Josh Loew bounced the Haven into the lead, 10-7.  After entering the third period ahead, 5-1, Brenneman scored four takedowns along with the riding time point for the major decision.
Senior Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) jumped out to a 6-2, first period lead before scoring the 13-5 major decision against Ryan Garner to boost the Haven lead to 14-7.  Moving into the third period with a 10-4 advantage, Gilligan scored another takedown with just under a minute remaining and held strong to tack on a riding time point for the extra team point.
Bloomsburg answered with six points, however, as Jim Bertulis pinned Ryan Summers (Plainwell, Mich. /Plainwell) in 1:48 after getting the early takedown at 174 pounds.  The points for the fall put the Haven lead at just 14-13.
At 184 pounds, senior Mike Greenberg (Canton/Canton) shutout Nate Shirk for the 3-0 decision.  Greenberg scored an escape in the second period and came up with a takedown with just six seconds remaining for the win.
The Huskies moved back to within one point with a 1-0 win by Chad Hoare over Bald Eagle Carlos Ponce (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah Miami Lakes).  The match’s only point came in the second period, Hoare tallying the escape point after starting in the defensive position.
With just one bout remaining and the team score at 17-16 in favor of Lock Haven, the winner at heavyweight would decide the team outcome. Bloomsburg’s Ryan Chulada rolled out a quick takedown over Lock Haven senior Steve Itterly just 16 seconds into the match, but Itterly would break free quickly. Chulada scored another takedown with 37 seconds remaining in the first period, but again, Itterly posted the prompt escape. Another escape by Itterly in the second period made the score 4-3 in favor of the Huskie wrestler.  Chulada opted for the neutral start in the third stanza, and after a minute passed with no scoring, Itterly finally worked through for the control position on the mat for a takedown with 45 seconds remaining. The Bald Eagle senior was able to hold Chulada down the rest of the period, taking the 5-4 win and securing the 20-16 emotional victory for the Haven.
The Bald Eagles next compete at the EWL Championships from March 6-7 hosted by Bloomsburg University .

Feb. 19 -  Clarion University 25, Lock Haven 18    (Clarion, Pa.)

BALD EAGLES UNABLE TO GET PAST CLARION, 25-18

(Clarion, Pa.) – When the Lock Haven University wrestling team finally gained the momentum, winning the last three matches,  it was already too late as Clarion University (4-8, 2-5 EWL) was able to hang on for the 25-18 win in league action at Tippin Gymnasium.  The Bald Eagles fall to 3-10 overall and 0-6 in the EWL with one league dual meet remaining.
Clarion stormed out to a 21-3 lead, winning four of the first five matches.  Starting at 174 pounds, Aaron Wright set the tone early by shutting out LHU’s Ryan Summers (Plainwell, Mich./Plainwell), 8-0, for the major decision and early four-point team advantage.
At 184 pounds, Mike Greenberg (Canton/Canton) temporarily silenced the crowd by winning a 13-6 decision versus Marcus Surin. Greenberg was ahead 8-1 after two periods and scored an escape and takedown early in the third to move out into an 11-1 lead. Surin countered, however, tacking on two late takedowns but Greenberg was able to withstand the flurry and left the mat with the regular decision.

Jason Gilligan scored a 5-2 victory
 over Clarion's Jeremy Reitz
in tonight's action.

Clarion heated up with a win by fall at 197 pounds, as regular 184-pound starter Kyle Cathcart moved up a class to take on Lock Haven’s Carlos Ponce (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah Miami Lakes).  Cathcart took control early, jumping ahead 5-0 before pinning Ponce at 1:57 .
At heavyweight, Matt Wilcox followed suit as he scored in bundles to claim a 19-3 technical fall against Bald Eagle back-up Tim Meyers (Mill Hall/Central Mountain) early in the second period at 3:48
The deficit grew to 21-3 for the Bald Eagles after they forfeited at 125 pounds due to an injured Jim Collins (Jonestown/Northern Lebanon
).
Dave Predko (Ridgway/Ridgway) breathed a little life into the Haven forces as 133 pounds, pinning Clarion’s Louis Russo in just 2:05 to bring the team score to 21-9.
Clarion’s No. 17-ranked Frank Edgar had little problem with Lock Haven’s Casey Moore (Beech Creek/Central Mountain), sealing the deal with an 18-7 major decision after leading 11-2 entering the third period.
Lock Haven would take the final three bouts but was unable to collected the needed bonus points to top the Clarion score.  At 149 pounds, No. 15-ranked Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area) was back in action, using a third period escape and a riding time point to earn the 2-0 win and inch the team score closer, 25-12.
Charlie Brenneman (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) followed Maney’s lead, winning by tie breaker criteria versus Clarion’s Chris Horning.  After trailing 3-0, a reversal by Brenneman late in the second period made the score 3-2 entering the final regulation period.  Brenneman escaped from the defensive position to start the match, tying things up at 3-3.  Into the tiebreaker round, Horning scored an escape. Brenneman posted a reversal over Horning in his 30-second period, but Horning was awarded a penalty point to tie things back up at 5-5.  Both wrestlers scored escapes in the next tie break period, but with 22 seconds of riding time, Brenneman won the match on criteria.
In the final match-up at 165 pounds, Lock Haven’s Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) pulled off the 5-2 decision against former high school teammate and collegiate rival Jeremy Reitz. Doing all of his scoring in the third period, Gilligan was down 1-0 when he posted a reversal.  Reitz escaped, but Gilligan got another takedown with under a minute remaining and collected the extra riding time point for the 5-2 decision and the final 25-18 team tally.
The Bald Eagles return home for their final dual meet of the season on Saturday, February 21, hosting Bloomsburg University .  Match time is 7:30 p.m.

At 133 pounds, Dave Predko (Ridgway/Ridgway) put the first Bald Eagle points on the scoreboard with a 4-3 win against Seth Lisa.  Predko used an escape and a takedown in the second period to move into a 3-1 lead.  Lisa evened the match on a reversal to open the third period, but Predko was able to pick up the escape point. With riding time not a factor, Predko went on to log the 4-3 victory.
That would be as close as the Bald Eagles would get, however, as West Virginia moved into a sizeable lead with wins in the next three matches.  Despite a flurry of points in the third period, John Holsinger (Pennsbury/Quakertown) was unable to beat Drew Joseph at 141 pounds, losing a slim 6-5 decision.  At 149 pounds, West Virginia's Mike Torriero stunned No. 11-ranked Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area) by major decision, 14-4.  The Mountaineer lead had grown to 16-3 after the match at 157 pounds, as No. 10-ranked Matt Lebe posted a 6-3 decision against Charlie Brenneman (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg).
Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) gave Lock Haven its second win of the evening with a commanding 12-2 major decision against West Virginia starter Zac Fryling. Gilligan scored two takedowns in each of the first two periods, then scored another takedown following a neutral start in the third period. With just under four minutes of riding time stacked up, he earned the extra point and the win to cut the deficit to 16-7.
At 174 pounds, red-shirt freshman Ryan Summers (Plainwell, Mich. /Plainwell) came out with another decisive win for the Bald Eagles, recording an 8-1 decision against Doug Studenic. Summers led 2-0 after one period, then scored another takedown and tacked on a pair of nearfall points in the second period. A defensive start gave way to an escape point and the riding time held for the 8-1 win.
West Virginia put an abrupt end to the Haven momentum, however, taking wins in the final three match-ups to claim the final 29-10 victory.  Top-ranked Greg Jones remained undefeated after pinning Mike Greenberg (Canton/Canton) in the first period.  No. 18-ranked Matt Daddino scored a major decision against Carlos Ponce (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah Miami Lakes) at 197 pounds, and at heavyweight, Steve Itterly (Easton/Nazareth) suffered a 4-1 decision against Ryan Wilman.
The Bald Eagles remain on the road, stopping off at the University of Pittsburgh tomorrow, Fri., Feb. 13, for a 7:30 p.m. league face-off.

Feb. 8 - #10 Penn State University 26, Lock Haven 11    (Lock Haven, Pa.)

LOCK HAVEN DOWNED BY #10 PENN STATE, 26-11

(Lock Haven, Pa.) –  The tenth-ranked Penn State University Nittany Lions (12-4, 4-2 Big Ten) toppled Lock Haven University (3-7, 0-3 EWL) by a final score of 26-11 this evening at Thomas Fieldhouse.
Penn State scored wins in the first five matches of the night, building a 19-0 lead before the Haven would finally answer.  At 125 pounds, No. 10-ranked Adam Smith used a third-period escape and a riding time point after keeping Jim Collins (Jonestown/Northern Lebanon) under control in the second for the 2-0 win and the early 3-0 team lead.

Carlos Ponce scored a 12-4 major decision over
the Nittany Lions' A.J. Cummins at 197 pounds.

The Nittany Lions jumped ahead 9-0 following the 133 pound bout, as No. 5-ranked Josh Moore pinned Lock Haven’s James Barnes (Windsor, Conn. /Windsor) in the second period.  Moore held an 11-3 lead after the first three minutes. Barnes scored a takedown to open the second after a neutral start, but Moore reversed Barnes 30 seconds later then put him on his back for the fall in 4:15 .
At 141 pounds, John Holsinger (Pennsbury/Quakertown) was shutout by DeWitt Driscoll, 13-0, to up the Penn State lead to 13-0.
In the battle of two ranked wrestlers, No. 7-ranked Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area) was upset by Penn State ’s No. 11-ranked Matt Storniolo, 2-1.  A scoreless first period gave way to a 1-0 lead for the Nittany Lion after two periods, Storniolo earning the early escape in the second.  With Maney on the defensive to start the third period, the Bald Eagle would be unable to escape the hold of Storniolo until only 38 seconds remained. With the riding time advantage and no further scoring in the period, Storniolo would claim the 2-1 win.
Penn State went ahead 19-0 after a sudden victory decision at 157 pounds. Charlie Brenneman (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) owned a one-point advantage, 7-6, after two periods of action, but James Woodall kept it close and was within one, 9-8, with just over a minute remaining in regulation time. With just 18 seconds left, Brenneman was hit with his second stall warning and the point awarded to Woodall tied things up at 9-9. Woodall wasted little time in the sudden victory period, catching Brenneman off-guard to score the takedown after just 16 seconds for the 11-9 win.
The Haven would earn its first points of the match on a 14-6 major decision by Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) over Jeremy Hart at 165 pounds. Gilligan took control early, outscoring the Nittany Lion in all three periods, including three takedowns in the third period.
At 174 pounds, Bald Eagle Dan Riggs (Hanover/Delone Catholic) added three more points to the Haven’s total to make the score 19-7 after a 3-1 win over Rich Brooks. Riggs scored all three points in the second period and gave up just a third-period escape before securing the victory.
Penn State bundled up three more points at 184 pounds as No. 7-ranked Eric Bradley posted a 3-1 decision over Mike Greenberg (Canton/Canton). Bradley was ahead 3-0 after two stanzas and Greenberg was unable to follow his third-period escape with any offensive points to force the overtime.
The final Bald Eagle points were earned by 197-pounder Carlos Ponce (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah Miami Lakes) who won in decisive fashion over A.J. Cummins with a 12-4 major decision. Ponce stormed out to a 5-1 lead after the opening period and scored another takedown in the second to remain in the lead over the Nittany Lion back-up, 7-2.   Two more takedowns and a riding time tally for the red-shirt freshman earned the 12-4 win and moved the score to 22-11 in favor of Penn State.
In the final match of the evening, Penn State’s Josh Walker closed things out with a 10-0 major decision against Steve Itterly (Easton/Nazareth). Walker scored his first takedown and picked up four nearfall points midway through the first period to set the tone, shutting out the Bald Eagle.
Lock Haven is now 3-7 overall and 0-3 in the EWL.  The Bald Eagles next travel to West Virginia University in EWL action on Thurs., Feb. 12, at 7:30 p.m. Lock Haven will stop at the University of Pittsburgh the next day, Fri., Feb. 13, for another league match-up at 7:30 p.m.

Feb. 7 - Cleveland State University 18, Lock Haven 15    (Lock Haven, Pa.)

BONUS POINTS THE DIFFERENCE IN 18-15
CLEVELAND STATE WIN OVER LOCK HAVEN

(Lock Haven, Pa.) –  Cleveland State University (7-7, 1-2 EWL) scored its first Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) victory with an 18-15 decision over Lock Haven University (3-6, 0-3 EWL) in Thomas Fieldhouse this evening.  Both squads posted five victories but the Vikings managed a trio of bonus points to tuck away the league victory.
Lock Haven’s Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) opened things up at 165 pounds by scoring a 10-5 decision over Matt Klinger to give the first points to the Bald Eagles, 3-0.  Gilligan took Klinger to the mat off the first whistle, scoring the takedown just 10 seconds into the match. After one period, Gilligan had a 4-2 lead, then built it to 7-3 by the end of the second.  Klinger earned an escape after starting in the defensive position to open the third period, but another Gilligan takedown and his riding time point brought the final to 10-5.

Charlie Brenneman (157 lbs.)
was one of five Bald Eagles
 picking up wins in tonight's
loss versus Cleveland State.

Cleveland State scored four points on Matt Kallai’s 10-1 major decision over Dan Riggs (Hanover/Delone Catholic) at 174 pounds. Kallai took the lead from the start and added a flurry of points in the third period on a reversal and three-point near fall to control the match.  Riggs only point of the bout came on an escape in the open of the second period.
The lead bounced back to the Haven after 184-pounder Mike Greenberg (Canton/Canton) posted three points in the final period to grab an 8-6 victory against Ron Howard. Howard fought off several of Greenberg’s shots early and bounced back from a first period deficit to take a 6-5 lead after two periods. Greenberg would pick up an escape midway through the final stanza then spun around to score a quick takedown over Howard, giving him the points for the 8-6 victory and the 6-4 Haven lead.
At 197 pounds, Cleveland State ’s Joe Phillips ignited a string of three wins by the Vikings with an 8-6 decision over Carlos Ponce (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah Miami Lakes).  Ponce was down just 6-4 after two periods of action versus Joe Phillips but despite a hard-fought effort, closed on the low end of the 8-6 decision.
Viking heavyweight and No. 14-ranked Russ Davie used an escape in the third period to collect the 1-0 win over Bald Eagle Steve Itterly (Easton/Nazareth).  After the first period ended deadlocked at 0-0, Itterly choose a neutral start to open the second. Neither wrestler was able to score, and Davie started in the defensive position in the third period. Itterly was able to hold Davie down for just 19 seconds, and no scoring over the remainder of the match Davie was declared the winner.
At 125 pounds, Cleveland State ’s DeAngelo Penn fired up a 12-3 major decision over Jim Collins (Jonestown/Northern Lebanon
) to give the Vikings a 14-6 team lead.  Penn had moved out into a 7-2 lead early, then added on until the final 12-3 verdict.
Lock Haven moved the score to 14-9 after a 5-3 decision for Dave Predko (Ridgway/Ridgway) over Kevin Linich at 133 pounds. Linich got the first takedown but those early points were the Viking’s only offensive tallies of the match as Predko earned the escape then scored a takedown of his own to close period one in a 3-2 lead.  A reversal by the Bald Eagle with 47 seconds left in the second period and subsequent control erased the riding time Linich had built up and gave Predko the 5-2 lead.  Linich scored an early escape in the final stanza but that would be the final points scored in the match as Predko would pocket the 5-3 victory.
Cleveland State’s Anthony Coleman tacked on more bonus points for the Vikings at 141 pounds, scoring a 13-5 major decision over John Holsinger (Pennsbury/Quakertown).  Coleman had the lead from the first period on, adding a riding time point at the end for the major decision.
No. 7-ranked Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area) was a 2-0 winner over Matt DePolo at 149 pounds, scoring an escape and riding time point for the victory.  Maney’s win moved LHU to within six of tying the match, 18-12.
Charlie Brenneman (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) would fight to try and score the fall, and though he scored the win, was unable to make up the difference with a fall, winning 8-3 over Jason Effner.
Lock Haven is now 3-5 overall and 0-2 in the EWL.  The Bald Eagles will next host #10 Penn State University (10-4) tomorrow, Sun., Feb. 8, at 6 p.m.

LHU's Mike Maney became the
13th wrestler in conference history
to win four individual titles with
his win at 149 pounds today.

In addition to its pair of champions and two runners-up, all five wrestlers in the third and fifth-place bouts scored wins. Lock Haven had three grapplers pick up third-place finishes and another two taking fifth place. LHU’s Jason Gilligan earned the Most Falls Award with three over the span of the championships.
Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area)scored a trip to the finals with a fall in 4:12 over Zach Leathers of Shippensburg in the semifinals. In his fourth appearance in the championship finals, Maney became the conference’s 13th four-time champion with a 7-2 victory over Edinboro’s Deonte Penn. Maney took a 2-0 lead after the first three minutes of action.  Penn scored an escape for the only scoring in the second period to usher in the third with Maney in the 2-1 lead. Maney would start the third period in the defensive position, but reversed Penn with 1:07 remaining for the 4-1 advantage. Penn would break loose but Maney would come back at him with a takedown with four seconds remaining. With the extra riding time point, the Bald Eagle senior pocketed the 7-2 victory for his own piece of PSAC history.
Jim Collins (Jonestown/Northern Lebanon) earned a spot in the 125-pound finals with a 4-2 semifinal win over East Stroudsburg’s Mark Koszyk.  Making his first appearance in the championship match, Collins had a 4-1 lead over Millersville’s Adam Bunting after two periods of action.  Bunting escaped early in the third period, then scored a takedown with six seconds remaining to tie up the match at 4-4.  Collins wasted little time in the minute of sudden victory, picking up the takedown just 13 seconds in to capture his first PSAC individual title, 6-4.
Dave Predko (Ridgway/Ridgway) also advanced to the finals, winning 5-1 against Bryan Hart of Bloomsburg in the 133 pound semifinal.  In the championship match versus the top-seeded Jacob Gray of Edinboro, a scoreless first period gave way to a 5-2 score in the second in favor of Gray. Gray earned the escape and another takedown in the third period before a late escape by Predko brought the final to 9-3.
Wrestling for the heavyweight title for the second-straight season was senior Steve Itterly (Bethlehem/Nazareth), who would end up as the runner-up after suffering a first period fall against Edinboro’s Joe Hennis.  In the semifinal bout, Itterly nabbed a 4-1 win in the tiebreaker over Millersville’s Mike Davidowich to earn a trip to his second straight championship bout.  Up against Joe Hennis for the second time in a week, Itterly got taken down on the edge of the mat after just one minute and was caught there, giving up the fall in 1:21 to place second overall.
At 157 pounds, Charlie Brenneman (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) would take third place overall.  Brenneman lost in the tiebreaker, 5-1, against Clarion’s Chris Horning in the semifinal round, but bounced back in the consolations with an 8-5 win over Bloomsburg’s Josh Loew.  In the third-place bout against Edinboro’s Eric Ring, Brenneman scored the match’s first points in the third period with a reversal out of the defensive starting position.  Three near fall points came Brenneman’s way, and despite an escape by Ring, the Bald Eagle finished with the 5-1 advantage for third place.
Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) would bring home third place in the 165 pound bracket.  Gilligan wound up in the consolation bracket following a 3-2 sudden victory loss against Jeremy Reitz of Clarion.  He won an 8-1 match-up against Keith Smith of East Stroudsburg to earn a spot in the third-place bout.  Meeting Slippery Rock’s Jason Cardillo for the second time in the tournament, Gilligan duplicated the initial result with another first-period fall, this one in 2:20, for third place.
At 184 pounds, Mike Greenberg (Canton/Canton) also collected a third-place finish.  Greenberg dropped into the consolation bracket with a loss against Shippensburg’s Corey Jacoby in the semifinals, giving up a takedown late in the third period before losing 3-2.  Greenberg then advanced to the consolation championship, recording a 9-0 major decision over Bloomsburg’s Nate Shirk.  Matching up with East Stroudsburg’s Brandon Mihalko in the third-place battle, Greenberg used some early scoring to set the tone before rolling to the 9-1 major decision.
141-pounder Ian McGoldrick (Brodheadsville/Pleasant Valley) suffered a first period fall against Edinboro’s Ron Doppelheuer in the consolation bracket. McGoldrick would draw East Stroudsburg’s Tyler Rapp in the fifth-place bout, handling the Warrior for the first-period fall in 2:40.  The freshman Bald Eagle had built a 7-1 lead before getting the count on Rapp.
At 197 pounds, Carlos Ponce (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah Miami Lakes) was a fifth-place finisher for the Bald Eagles.  Ponce won his first match of the day with a 13-4 major decision against Slippery Rock’s Marcus Bartley.  Jared Dubbs of Shippensburg would kick the Bald Eagle into the fifth-place bout however, handing Ponce an 18-1 technical fall in 5:51.  The rookie Bald Eagle would match up with Aaron Smith of Millerville in the fifth-place bout.  Ponce was behind, 3-2, entering into the third period, but rallied for two takedowns and two backpoints to take over the lead and wrangle the 8-5 win.
In the consolation bracket, 174-pounder Dan Riggs (Hanover/Delone Catholic) was eliminated in the day’s opening round, and Riggs losing 8-2 against Bloomsburg’s Jim Bertulis.

Jan. 23 - #25 Edinboro University 23, Lock Haven 12  (Lock Haven Pa.)

#25 EDINBORO OVERPOWERS HAVEN GRAPPLERS, 23-12

(Lock Haven, Pa.) – Edinboro University (5-3, 2-0 EWL) won the last five bouts to overpower the Lock Haven University wrestling team (3-5, 0-2 EWL) by a final score of 23-12 in Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) action this evening in Thomas Fieldhouse. The Haven’s Jim Collins (Jonestown/Northern Lebanon) at 125 pounds, Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area) at 149 pounds and 157 pounder Charlie Brenneman (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) all collected wins.

Lock Haven's Jimmy Collins on the way to
pinning Edinboro's Chris Pruden in the
125 lb. bout.

The Haven had built a 12-6 lead after five matches, but the Bald Eagles lost matches against three ranked Edinboro wrestlers from 165 through 184 pounds, then gave up the remaining two bouts at 197 pounds and heavyweight to bounce the final advantage over to the Fighting Scots.
Jim Collins pinned Edinboro’s Chris Pruden in the first period, making quick work of the Fighting Scot with just 1:32 expired.  The Haven’s Dave Predko (Ridgway/Ridgway) had stayed even with Edinboro’s Jacob Gray at 133 pounds throughout the first period, but Gray reversed Predko out of the defensive starting position then tacked on three near fall points by the close of the second period.  Gray kept Predko down the entire third period, earning the riding time point for the 6-0 win.
At 141 pounds, Edinboro tied up the match at 6-6 with a 5-2 decision for Ron Doppelheuer over Ian McGoldrick (Brodheadsville/Pleasant Valley).  Doppleheuer broke a scoreless tie in the second period with a takedown. McGoldrick escaped, but Doppleheuer got one more before the end of the period for the 4-1 lead.  An escape for the Bald Eagle in the third coupled with a riding time point for Doppleheuer brought the final to 5-2.
Lock Haven’s No. 6-ranked Mike Maney scored a 6-1 win at 149 pounds over Edinboro’s Deonte Penn. Maney posted a takedown less than a minute in, and after a Penn escape, took the Fighting Scot down to the mat again for the 4-1 lead at the end of the first period.  Penn took the defensive start in the second period but Maney held him down the entire two minutes and picked up two back points in the process for the 6-1 lead.  The senior Bald Eagle was unable to get out of the defensive position in the final period, however, keeping the final score at 6-1 to give LHU the 9-6 edge.
Charlie Brenneman scored a 5-1 decision over Edinboro’s Eric Ring at 157 pounds.  Brenneman exploded out to a 4-0 start in the first three minutes of action.  Ring earned the escape point in the second period with just under a minute expired, and after a neutral start in the third period and no scoring, Brenneman picked up the riding time point for the 5-1 win and the 12-6 Haven lead.
Edinboro’s string of three ranked grapplers followed to turn the tide, however, starting with No. 3-ranked Matt King at 165 pounds. Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) scored the first takedown of the match, but King ran off six straight points, including a three-point nearfall, in the second period to jump out to a 9-2 lead.  Another takedown and riding time point for King brought the final to 12-3 and moved Edinboro to within two team points, 12-10.
The Fighting Scots took over the lead for good at 174 pounds, as No. 7-ranked Nate Yetzer defeated Lock Haven’s Dan Riggs (Hanover/Delone Catholic) in a high-scoring, 19-13, affair.  No. 17-ranked Alex Clemsen posted a 13-5 major decision against Mike Greenberg (Canton/Canton) at 184 pounds, then the Fighting Scots’ Jim Gibson shutout Carlos Ponce (
Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah Miami Lakes), 6-0, at 197 pounds. In the heavyweight bout, Hennis outscored Lock Haven’s Steve Itterly (Easton/Nazareth) 6-2 for the win, bringing the overall margin to 23-12 in favor of Edinboro.
Lock Haven is now 3-5 overall and 0-2 in the EWL.  The Bald Eagles next compete at the 2004 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship from Friday through Saturday, Jan. 30-31, at Edinboro
, Pa.
