19 March 2004 (Evening Session)

LHU’S MANEY, BRENNEMAN ELIMINATED FROM ACTION
IN WRESTLEBACK QUARTERFINALS

(St. Louis, Mo.) –Lock Haven University’s Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle) and Charlie Brenneman (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) both saw their quest for All-America honors come to an abrupt halt as each suffered a loss in the wrestleback quarterfinals this evening at the 2004 NCAA Division I National Wrestling Championships being held in the Savvis Center in St. Louis, Mo.
Maney matched up against the 11th-seeded Jeff Ratliff of Ohio State in his bout. After a scoreless opening period, Maney controlled Ratliff the entire second period to accumulate riding time. An escape by the Bald Eagle in the third gave him the lead on the scoreboard, 1-0. Both wrestlers grappling for the advantage, they became locked up and as Maney was working for control, he was called down by the official and Ratliff scored the fall from the neutral position at 6:08.  Maney, a two-time All-American, closes out the season at 34-8 and a stellar career tied for fifth on the LHU all-time wins list with a 119-29 overall ledger.
At 157 pounds, Brenneman faced off against the sixth-seed Johny Hendricks of Oklahoma State. Brenneman fell behind early, down 7-1 after one period.  An escape and takedown for Hendricks in the second brought the tally to 10-1, and despite fervent attempts by Brenneman to score in the final period, he would wrap up on the low end of the 11-1 score.  Brenneman closes out his senior season with a record of 35-11.

19 March 2004 (Morning Session)

LHU’S MANEY AND BRENNEMAN STILL IN ACTION
AT NCAA WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

(St. Louis, Mo.) – After the morning session on day two, Lock Haven University’s Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle) and Charlie Brenneman (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) are both one win away from grabbing All-America honors at the 2004 NCAA Division I National Wrestling Championships being held in the Savvis Center in St. Louis, Mo.
Maney dropped down into the 149-pound wrestlebacks after suffering a 6-1 loss to the fourth-seeded Ryan Churella of Michigan.  Churella scored a takedown and controlled Maney throughout the latter half of the first period for the 2-0 lead. An escape by Churella to start the second period put Maney behind, 3-0.  After a neutral start in the third, Churella posted another takedown to go ahead, 5-0. An escape from Maney came with only 10 seconds left, as the Bald Eagle senior was forced to take the 6-1 defeat. He will face Ohio
State’s 11th-seeded Jeff Ratliff in the wrestlebacks this evening.
At 157 pounds, Brenneman went 2-0 to stay alive in the wrestlebacks.  He wasted little time in his first match, pinning Cornell’s Scott Roth in just 1:48.  In his second match-up, the senior Bald Eagle faced off with Hofstra’s Paul Siemon, winning by a 7-3 decision.  Brenneman scored the first points of the bout with a first-period takedown, then rolled up an extra two minutes of riding time by controlling Siemon the entire second period. An early escape gave him a 3-0 lead, but Siemon fought back with a takedown of his own to move to within one point, 3-2. Brenneman broke free for another point, and then scored a takedown to move out into a 6-2 advantage. Siemon was awarded a stalling point as time wore off the clock, but Brenneman matched that with a riding time point for the 7-3 win.  Brenneman will face Oklahoma State’s sixth-seeded Johny Hendricks this evening.

 18 March 2004 (Second Session)

LHU’S MANEY ADVANCES TO QUARTERFINALS
Brenneman Alive in the Wrestlebacks;
Gilligan Bows Out After Wrestleback Loss

(St. Louis, Mo.) – Showing the composure that has become characteristic of his exploits on the mat, Lock Haven University’s Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle) posted another come-from-behind victory in the second round of the 2004 NCAA Division I National Wrestling Championships, defeating West Virginia’s Mike Torriero, 8-6,  at the Savvis Center in St. Louis, Mo.  Senior Charlie Brenneman (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) advanced in the wrestlebacks, while fellow senior Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) bowed out of the tournament after a second loss this evening.
Against Torriero, Maney found himself in trouble early, suffering a takedown then giving up two back points before the close of the first period.  Torriero scored another two points after a neutral start to the second period, and Maney finally put his first tally on the score board with an escape. Down 6-1 to start the third period, Maney earned a quick escape. Working on his feet with four points to make up, the senior Bald Eagle circled until able to pull off a leg cradle for two points, rolling Torriero onto his back for three backpoints and the 7-6 lead with 16 seconds remaining in the match. Maney picked up a penalty point to go up 8-6, and would finish out the bout on top, advancing to the quarterfinals. His round-of-eight opponent will be Michigan’s fourth-seeded Ryan Churella.
Charlie Brenneman pocketed his first win at the NCAA tournament with a 5-3 decision over Justin Nestor of Pittsburgh in the first round of the wrestlebacks. Brenneman, who had defeated Nestor twice before during the course of the season, took a 2-0 lead with
1:24 of riding time after one period. Nestor tied up the match with a reversal in the second.  In the third period, Brenneman answered with a reversal of his own out of the defensive start. Despite the stalling point awarded to Nestor, the senior Bald Eagle had rolled up 4:02 of riding time to secure the 5-3 win. Brenneman matches up against Cornell’s Scott Roth in his next round of action.
Senior standout Jason Gilligan saw his season come to an end in a 5-4 loss to North Carolina State’s Dustin Kawa. Gilligan had moved out to a 3-1 lead entering the third period, but Kawa scored a reversal to tie up the match. An escape from Gilligan returned the lead to the Bald Eagle, but with just 24 seconds remaining, Kawa caught him for the takedown. His riding time worn down below the needed minute, Gilligan’s attempts to escape were unsuccessful as he closed out on the low end of the 5-4 margin.

 LHU’S MANEY SCORES COME-FROM-BEHIND WIN
IN NCAA FIRST ROUND

Brenneman and Gilligan Drop Opening Round Bouts

(St. Louis, Mo.) – Lock Haven University wrestling’s Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle) came from behind to score the first round win in this afternoon’s session of the 2004 NCAA Division I National Wrestling Championships at the Savvis Center in St. Louis, Mo.  Charlie Brenneman (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) and Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) were not as fortunate, as both suffered opening round losses and will compete in the wrestlebacks later this evening.
In his 149-pound opener, 12th-seeded Mike Maney had to fight back from an early deficit with a late takedown to stow away the 5-4 decision over Central Michigan University’s Adam Cunningham. Maney gave up a takedown midway through the first period and with an escape was down 2-1 entering the second stanza. Cunningham scored a reversal out of the defensive starting position, however, and another Maney escape brought the count to 4-2 in favor of the CMU wrestler.  The Bald Eagle senior earned the escape early in the third to cut the lead to just one, and with just 32 seconds remaining picked up a takedown near the edge of the mat to take over his first lead of the match. Holding on for the win, Maney matches up with familiar opponent Mike Torriero of West Virginia, who knocked off the fifth-seeded Trent Paulson of Iowa
State, 7-6, in the first round.  Maney and Torriero met each other twice this year already, each walking away with a win.
In 157-pound competition, Charlie Brenneman had a rough match versus Iowa State’s Travis Paulson, the 10th-seed, dropping an 11-4 match. Brenneman was behind 9-2 entering the third period and despite a takedown, would end up on the low end of score.   Brenneman will face Pittsburgh’s Justin Nestor in the wrestlebacks. In the regular season, the Bald Eagle posted a 2-0 record against Nestor.
Jason Gilligan gave up a takedown early to eighth-seeded Nick Passalano of Iowa
State and got caught on his back, losing by fall in 2:55 in his opening round match at 165 pounds.  Gilligan’s wrestleback opponent is Dustin Kawa of North Carolina State University.
The championship second round and the wrestleback first round begins at 6:30 p.m. this evening.
