EWL Update

CLARION,
Pa. –
The Lock Haven University wrestling team
has three wrestlers left in the winner's bracket after session one of the
Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) Championships at Clarion University.
Junior Morgan
Horner (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights) scored the team's
lone win of the early session with a pin of Edinboro University's Paul
Berger in 2:27.
Freshman Obe Blanc
(Naples, Fla./Lely) and junior Joshua A. Medina (Las Vegas/Pima C.C.)
both earned byes into the semifinal round. Blanc will face West Virginia
University's Shawn Cordell and Medina will draw Bloomsburg University's
George Hickman.
At 133, junior Jim
Collins (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) dropped a 16-2 decision to
West Virginia's Seth Lisa. After a bye in session two tonight, Collins will
face the loser of Edinboro's No. 1 Shawn Bunch and Tony Curto of Bloomsburg
tomorrow morning.
Freshman Matt
Fittery (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) couldn't get on track against
Bloomsburg's Brad Forbes at 141, falling by a 6-1 ledger. Fittery will also
have tonight off before facing the loser of No. 8 Ron Tarquino of the
University of Pittsburgh and Edinboro's Rick McLaughlin.
At 157, sophomore
Seth Martin (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) slipped by a 8-1 mark to
Edinboro's Matt Hill and will square off against Chris Tate of Bloomsburg
tonight.
At 165, junior B.J.
Mikeska (Derry, Pa./Bloomsburg University) fell victim to Pittsburgh's
Justin Nestor by fall, and will also have the night off before battling the
loser of #11 Nate Yetzer of Edinboro and West Virginia's Zac Fryling in
session three.
At 174, sophomore
Carlos Ponce (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah Miami Lakes) drew No. 14 Bryce
Hasseman and battled the top guy to a 4-2 loss. Ponce gets Cleveland State
University's Matt Klinger.
LHU 184-pounder
Mike Metzger (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) drew the toughest bout of
the day, facing WVU's No. 1 Greg Jones. Metzger fell by a 20-6 mark and will
battle Clarion's Dave Gardner tonight.
At 197, Horner saved
the team from a shutout with a dominant win over Burger. Horner scored a
takedown within the first five seconds, eventually working his legs in,
throwing a half-nelson to score the fall. Horner gets WVU's Jared Villers in
the semifinals tonight.
Heavyweight Jamie
Nagel (Shade Gap, Pa./Mount Union Area) scored a late escape to bring
himself within a takedown of a tie, but eventually fell 6-3 to Cleveland
State's Joe Dennis. Nagel will see a bye tonight before getting the loser of
Pittsburgh's Zach Sheaffer and Edinboro's Joe Hennis.
